If black Americans want the N-word to die, they will have to kill it themselves
N****r.

A 6-letter noun in the English language which the dictionary defines as ‘a contemptuous term for a black or dark-skinned person’.

It’s such an inflammatory and offensive word that for any high profile white person to publicly use it, without abbreviating to ‘N-word’, is rightly tantamount to professional suicide and personal opprobrium.

I don’t use it; would never use it. But it has become astonishingly ubiquitous in modern American society.

...

The N-word is a grotesque, odious, evil stain on the English language. It symbolises everything multi-cultural America has fought so hard to move on from - white-run, imperialist, violent, sexually malevolent barbarism.

Yet far from receding in society, it’s spreading; out of the once clearly defined confines of private usage in the black community, into the public hallways of every school in America.

This has to be wrong, doesn't it?

Better, surely, to have it expunged completely. Eradicated, obliterated, tied to a literary post and whipped into such brutal submission that it never rears its vicious head again.

But this will only happen when America’s black community applies the same level of tolerance to its own use of the word as that now applied in the National Football League: zero

Too long to quote in whole.

Shit. Didn't know daily mail was banned.
Alright, go here. It's the first link

Try telling that to the multiple white people I see bandying it about on social media and in comments. I'm already doing my part as a black american.

He's not wrong, but it's a little weird that a white guy is basically lecturing an entire group of people, some of whom are not offended by the word.

I always thought it was like the word "bitch."

Females use it to describe each other affectionately, like "yeah my bitches and I are going to go out tonight," but if a nonfemale or nonmember of female's group uses that word to describe said female/females in group, like "i see some bitches over there," it's suddenly offensive and terrible.

(You can probably tell what I think of that logic, but nonetheless, it's pretty similar imo.)

He totally skips over history, context, and nuance.

Using that word is the only double-standard right-wingers have ever cared about.

Fuck outtahere.

There are a variety of odious words that have been reappropriated yet for some weird reason, this is the only one that a certain group of people (ie some white people) can't wrap their heads around. Who can and can't say the word is up to that group, not an outside group or person.

Personally I use the word with my brothers (ie my actual blood brothers) when we're alone, but I don't say it in public.

Try this.

He must have had a need to be in the public eye again. This has been said so many times by so many people I wonder why anyone even bothers anymore.

If this thread lasts, he may have some company lol

Outside of Piers being too simpleminded to understand racism, the big issue is
Better, surely, to have it expunged completely. Eradicated, obliterated, tied to a literary post and whipped into such brutal submission that it never rears its vicious head again

I'm certain he thinks he's made a brilliant analogy.

Thought he was going to talk about the word nigga but nope. Racist people still don't know the difference between that and nigger yet they somehow think they can use it in demeaning way because other people use it in a non racist way.

idk why people think only black people use nigga? i grew up using it and had friends who were Asian, Hispanic, and white who said it all the time with me and my other black friends. it was just a word we grew up around. it only becomes offensive when non-blacks from areas that dont really talk like that want to start saying nigga just to be "cool". honestly tho, if people stopped saying nigger as an insult to black folk and people wanted to just start using nigga like it has been used, then i dont care who says nigga.

I suppose he's right to some degree - if you want a word to die then stop using it - but I fail to see how this is an obligation of the black community so much as everyone in the English-speaking world.

But this will only happen when America’s black community applies the same level of tolerance to its own use of the word as that now applied in the National Football League: zero

I'm confused. I thought the black community had re-appropriated the n-word for its own use; isn't that in a way more powerful than doing away with the word altogether? (Growing up Jewish, the closest comparison I have is Jews saying "don't Jew me up" to each other in a similar attempt at re-contextualization.)

I always thought co-opting the word was a much more effective and interesting way to go about it. Sort of a way of constantly remembering how racist the US has been and continues to be.

I took a class with a black dude from Brooklyn last term, and he talked about the use of the word back in his neighborhood. He said that it was common with Hispanics and white people to say nigga in conversation and that he never felt uncomfortable when they said it.

I think the conundrum that out of touch white people like Piers Morgan can't understand is the contextual differences in the use of the word. Kind of like, "If you don't want other people to say it, why do you say it?" A fundamental misunderstanding of what the word means to many black people in conversation.

Although, I'm white, so what the fuck do I know.

Re-up that source brehs

Fuck is this nigga Piers Morgan talking about?

my sentiments exactly

shit won't die one way or another.

Yes, it's used as a term of endearment in the black community, just not by all. It's comparable for sure because let's be honest, the n word is not going anywhere, regardless if black people use it or not. The original word is undermined so much that other people use it in the same context(as inappropriate as it may be regardless of who uses it).
