Piers Morgan: If black Americans want the N-word to die, they will have to kill it

Again.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.
Some of y'all really need to reflect on this.

I don't understand why this is so hard for people to comprehend. Racists do not care whether or not Black people use the N-word among themselves.

Insanity and lacks any sympathy or empathy.
Then they get mad because we don't take their "fair sociological questions" seriously.

We've been elaborating on it for seven pages.

It doesn't matter what we do, how we talk, how we act, how much we achieve. There is no "teaching" some people about us. We are niggers whether we call ourselves that or not. Charlemagne is a moron.

Well they only think that way because we continue to call each other nigga.

No. Cool troll though.

I mean in a way I am saying, it's better to reject the word and say, "we were never n***s in the first place," than to subconsciously confirm to others that you deserve to be called that, but I'm not saying that black people "bring racism on themselves," as if stopping would end racism, or racism is black people's fault.

I'm also saying playing with such toxic negative energy when referring to yourself and people who share your attributes probably has another subconscious effect. It's a humbling, dimunitive word, at best. People who feel bonded over all being called that, it's like the ghost of that negativity is right outside the walls of their safe space. I have trouble believing there's absolutely no spillover. And that makes me empathize with people who use it, and makes me have trouble viewing that as a victorious "reclamation" when the wrong person saying it is so harmful.

At a psychological level, there are interesting things in play when deciding to use the most demeaning word I can even think of in reference to one's self or others they care about.
You are hand waving history, and society. Maybe in your idealize world chakras can aline and 400 years of suffering will evaporate overnight with one word. But it is not reality.

To some people, but those people are lost assholes anyway. No one should model anything they do in their lives around what those kinds of people think, obviously.

But the rest of the world knows about the harmfulness of that word, too. Just on a purely rational level, how do they think people calling themselves n****s feel about themselves, when they know it's like the worst insult there is for someone of that race? Would a black person who worked hard their whole life, and got a job in Obama's cabinet, feel like they were being respected or bonded with if Obama turned to them when everyone left the Oval Office, and said, "so n****, what's good?"

Can a term like "retard" be reclaimed this way amongst people people with intellectual disabilities? "Hey, retard, what's up?" "Not much, my retard." Funny, non-confrontational, sure - but does it engender respect or respect the individuality of the people?

You are hand waving history, and society.
On the contrary, that's exactly the negativity I am attempting to account for.

To reiterate a few points:
- Fuck Piers Morgan
- Fuck people who complain about the double standard
- I'm advocating people stop using super harmful words just because they should love themselves and each other more than that
- Yes, I am possibly too naive and too much of a hippie

It's not rocket science. The rest of the world can't call us niggas because we said so. They just have to deal with that. We're not going to infantilize you over this bullshit and start dishing out nigga permission slips on a case by case basis.

Honestly, I don't see any connection between your post and mine. In fact I explicitly said I don't want to use the word and don't see a "double standard." So I'm not sure how this is even a reply to me.

Of course you don't see the connection. You wanna run circles around the argument and assign blame to black people for the way the world treat us.

No, literally, we are talking about two completely different things.

You don't have to tell me about "n**** permission slips" because I: don't want one, wouldn't use it if I had one, would never say that word to begin with, am not asking for permission to use that word, don't think white people should use it, think the word is awful, and most importantly, believe that there is no good use of the word.

That has nothing to do with blaming anyone for anything. The only people to blame for racism are racists themselves. But when I say, I think there's negativity in that word in all contexts, even among friendly people, your reply is that you think I'm think asking for you to "start dishing out nigga permission slips on a case by case basis." If I literally believe that there is no good use of the word, why would I want that? No good comes from it - hand me the permission slip and I'll burn it.

If you want to lump me in with everyone asking black people to fix racism by doing x, y, or z, then you've got me wrong.

Who decides if it's negative when black people use it? You? Other white people?

I fucking love hip-hop and it's always awkward when you're listening to the good biggie shit and can't shout 'nigga!' along with him. Funniest thing about that is I go to technical college in downtown Milwaukee, where about 60-70 percent of the student body is from an ethnic background other than white/caucasian, I turn the stereo way the fuck down when I roll down my window to take a ticket to get into the parking lot, almost like the white guilt in me is ashamed I listen to songs with the n-word in them. I always wonder what people would think if they saw this nerdy white guy blasting "All Eyez on Me" or similar shit to that.

pretty much. I usually skip the word when it comes to lyrics, I don't see why it's difficult to do.

I'm sure there's a governing body that decides such things that I'm forgetting, but I just can't remember it, so I'm gonna go with "death panels"
Clever. But since you aren't black, you don't get to decide what is negative for us. Thanks for being condescending though, shows how much this actually matters to you.

Actually, my point was, nobody gets to decide what's negative completely for themselves. If someone punches you in front of 10,000 people, it doesn't matter if you decide they really hugged you. Everyone saw what happened.

Well to be fair, those tweeters probably only call Obama a nigger because they listen to rap music! If rap music never existed they would never call Obama a nigger. Besides they're not calling him a nigger because they're racist (they're never racist, it's always ignorance). They're calling Obama a nigger because they're upset about the election, so they're just saying the meanest thing they can think of. If black people stopped calling each other niggas then these people wouldn't have called Obama a nigger so really it's black peoples' fault. They have no one to blame but themselves. Before rap music, no one used the word nigger. After rap music came along in the 80s, people started calling blacks niggers.

Legend indeed.

Insanity and lacks any sympathy or empathy.

Just straight up remedial fuckers really. On some nonsensical shit.

Wow you're childish. You could have respectfully disagreed and discussed why you think my propositions were flawed yet you decided on emotional attacks and shouting down at me. What a waste of an opportunity for a productive conversation. It's so sad that one can't have a civil discussion about race around here.

A punch is not the same as saying nigga and people outside looking in don't get to decide if it's negative or not.

Yes I'm childish because I don't agree that black people are partially to blame for the racism we experience. What did you hope to get out of a discussion where you blame the people experiencing the racism?
By the way, no one is shouting down at you and I responded to your ridiculous argument about black people being responsible for racism they experience, as did other posters.
