Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Just changed my PC screen from an Acer 26" 1920x1200 to a Sony 42W706. Input lag is fantastic. I've had problems with games that need 59hz refreshrate; in nvidia control panel I can create the resolution at 59hz and the test works, but ingame the TV can go to "Unsupported resolution" occasionally when using 59hz + downsampling. Best workaround for those games is to use 50hz@50 fps that works perfectly fine in that tv. 2880x1620 works perfect, but 3072x1728 doesn't work in the first attemp (I guess it will need fine tunning in timings).

I can only recommend this tv for pc gaming. After those pictures, the old monitor is already in the locker.

Will my 40" Samsung series 5 1080p 60hz LCD from 2010 be enough for a PS4?

Its been good to me with the PS3/360 but still.

I should probably list the exact model but I'm on my phone right now...

Sony 65X900A 4K 2013 model for $2299:
http://slickdeals.net/f/7037436-65-sony-xbr65x900a-4k-ultra-hd-3d-led-hdtv-2299-free-shipping?v=1

This deal has been up since yesterday and they are almost gone. If you want one, pull the trigger NOW. Yeah yeah 4K Ultra HD is pointless right now but for this price fuck it, get it because it was Sony's $8000 flagship last year and had their best panel with TRILUMINOS Quantum LED whatevers.

I'm in for one and I'm going to bring that W850A back to Best Buy lol.

Returned the 70 inch Sony W850B model because the picture quality was crap. It had low input lag, though, which was nice.

Got the 64inch Samsung plasma instead. The new one that's hella cheap. It's amazing how much better this looks, especially during dark scenes. I do see the pixels, though, due to their weird configuration, but that's only if I sit really close.

Gonna have a monitor on the side just to play Street Fighter.

Sony 65" KDL65W850A $1499 at Frys right now. ~18ms lag according to displaylag.com

Thanks for the heads-up. I have a 60" Mitsu DLP and the video board is dying, leaving me with a growing constellation of always-on white pixels. That's okay for Trine 2 but unacceptable for TLOU. I was kicking myself for not picking this set up when it was on sale a couple of months back, but I jumped all over it this time.

Is that the one with PenTile pixel arrangement in the panel?

Recently bought a LED backlight kit on Amazon for night viewing and I'm blown away by how much better my Sony LED looks because of it. The black bars on letterboxed movies look completely black, even in dark scenes. Not quite plasma like, but close enough for me.

That's the one. I noticed it because I was sitting pretty close to the screen when messing around with the config (no wireless mouse or keyboard on my HTPC :P).

From more than 7 feet away, it's negligible. Color reproduction and black detail is much more important to me.

Now imagine that with a VT60. 8)

FUCK!!!!!!

You will have to pry my plasma TV from my cold dead hands. If I had the money, I'd buy another one as insurance in case something ever happens to mine.

Yup, fucking sad. Here in the middle east we only got Panasonic's VT50 65" last year and i bought it in a heart beat, It looks spectacular. I only wonder what the VT60 looks like, i'm sure it's gorgeous as hell. The only thing i dislike about the VT60 from the pictures i have seen is the ugly as sin stainless steel stand.

Samsung confirmed Thursday that it was shutting down its plasma TV business "due to changes in market demands," choosing instead to focus on curved and ultra-high-definition models that use LED technology. The news was first reported by Reuters.

The good news is that the curve & ultra HD market will bomb harder than the 3D gimmick they tried to force down people's throat.

Then they'll be back to making.... well, that same shit they been making for the past 10 years with no improvements.

In what way?

in what way??

well, i can start from the fact that the tv upscale the content to 4k, and since isn't a movie, but a 3D digital content, the upscale is really well done, and the aliasing is less noticeable.
Also, my previous TV wasn't LED, which bring to me more vibrant colors.
The curved bring a bit more 3d-like vision, but you have to stay in the perfect middle of the screen. but hey, i'm a solo-gamer :D

Good news: my Sony 50W829 arrived!
Bad news: I'm moving house in two weeks so my gf and I agreed to wait until we move to take it out of the box.

So until then, I'm watching my 8 year old 32" Sammy! D:

So more of a game-changer for you than an actual game-changer. :P I don't doubt that HD material can still look stunning upscaled to 4K, but frankly I just don't see the point of 4K on a 55" TV, unless you're sitting less than 2m from it. Glad you're enjoying your set, I'm sure it's amazing. I, however, am picking up a 55" Sony W828 tomorrow and I'll be sticking with it for a couple of years at least, until 60"+ 4K OLED TVs become reasonably priced (fingers crossed).

Sony 50W829 question!

Has anyone had experience running old games consoles through the SCART or component? I'll have a PS2 and Gamecube via component, and PC Engine and Saturn that I want to play via RGB SCART. I don't have the budget for an extra fancy upscaler. :(

Alright so I'm looking at buying a new TV. Currently have a fairly average 32" Toshiba.

This thread seems to have a lot of Sony, so would that be the best bet?

I'm not sure if the options are different here in Australia, but here's one retailer as an example: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/

Not much of a range, and looks like I can't save money and skip out on 3D anymore.

I'd guess the 42" one would be what I'd go for. Don't think I'd want to go much more expensive than that. How's the input lag, picture quality, etc for that model?

If it sucks I could splurge and go for the 50" if it's fantastic quality.

I seriously know nothing about TVs D:

Oh and I'd want one with component inputs so I can play my Gamecube backlog through the Wii on that, as I don't have a decent CRT :(

Then I'd get something like this and a couple of these and have a sweet gaming set up.

I got a Vizio 42" M series 2014. It looks really good. Good to great black levels. Great color. Excellent viewing angles. Tiny Bezel. Lightweight. Decent input lag in gaming mode. The picture for the pricepoint is incredible. Apparently the E-series has lower lag because it doesn't have smart tv features eating up cpu cycles, and is cheaper. If the E series approaches the same great viewing angles and color that the M series has, it's probably the holy grail for cheap gaming tvs.

I have the 2014 42" e-series model and I see no input lag and I get pretty good blacks. Shockingly I've seen and heard almost no talk about this years Vizio models.

CNET's reviews are pretty strong for it, and there's a big thread up on AVsforum about it. Appears to be an improvement over last year's, but the M Series is distinctly better considering the minor price difference.

I've seen and heard they're only slightly better for a higher price.

Just unboxed my shiny new Sony Bravia KDL-55W828. Awww yuuusss! So far so good, now the tinkering begins. PS4 incoming in the next two days.

Awesome! Happy for you!
I'm really looking forward to unboxing my 50W829, which should be a huge step over my 32" Samsung from 2005 (!)

To make things even better ... I also won a PS4! FUUUUUCK YEAHHHHH! Sony are running Bravia/PS4 promotion in Italy and I was lucky enough to be picked. Feels good brahs.

My current dilemma and a helpful tip for anyone else looking to buy a new set:

I'm torn between getting the 48" Sony W600B for $650 or the 55" Samsung H6350 for $999. I know they're different sizes for difference prices, but what has me torn is whether the additional $250 is justified for the additional 7 inches. I know the Sony would be great for gaming (I've read it has low input lag) but I'd imagine the Samsung would do just fine as well. I've read a up on refreshes rates, the Sony is 60hz whereas the Samsung is 120hz. Not quite sure how much I'd notice the difference. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I also mentioned a tip. I'm planning on using a 10% off coupon on (almost) any item at Best Buy. The coupon is included in change of address packets you can pick up at the U.S. Post Office. If anyone else is planning on purchasing a TV, make sure you grab one. I've checked with Best Buy and these two TVs qualify.

Bought the Phillips Hue lightstrips. Set them up behind my W900.

O_O

Really does make a difference. Helps the set achieve a look with deeper blacks in a pitch black room, and the subtle ambient lighting also helps with viewing at night.

Refresh rates don't mean much when it comes to gaming in my experience. Most cheaper 120hz TVs create fake frames to help smooth out the viewing experience (gives you that odd TV drama feel). Which means the samsung won't be able to take advantage of a game running at 120 fps. However if you game on a console 60hz is all you need since you will be gaming at 60fps. You'll notice input lag before you'll see a benefit from a higher hz.

If I was you I would look into each sets black levels, input lag, screen uniformity (flash lighting/clouding) and color accuracy as a guide for what's worth buying.

Keep in mind I am no expert in TV technology.

I'm really interested on that one, it has an attractive design, and reviewers say the picture quality is amazing for the prize, but then there's also the Sony KDL40W600B which also great picture quality for the price. The Vizio is a little bit more expensive, but also a little bit taller, I really can't decide.

EDIT: The Vizio wen't down in price, it's now $500 instead of $540

Congratulations! :D
(my initial thought was a pang of jealousy! I so want a PS4 omg)
I totally forgot about the PS4 competition. I'll enter that after I've moved house. Wish me luck!

ok...i have my eyes set on W900 series and W802 series from Sony. Issue is, I can get 802 in 48in. which is perfectly fine for a good $1000 or cheaper depending on sales, while the W900 goes up significantly, like $800 more! Is the price difference really worth the extra costs?

I'm using my TV exclusively for PS4 gaming and maybe some light mac mini use, so just want a really clear crisp picture, with very low input lag. I've heard great things about both models, just wondering if it's worth upgrading to the 900 from the 802, also, why is the 900 so hard to find? Did they not make a similar 2014 model?

Alright guys. I'm looking to buy a 60+ inch TV to properly enjoy gaming on my ps4 and wii u. At the moment I have a decent 60 inch mitsubishi TV. It does the job but it's only 720p. I need that 1080!
Enlighten me GAF, what are your picks?

My 65X900A arrived today undamaged. Looking forward to putting this thing through its paces this weekend. It turns out that Nvidia has added 4K/60 output to all their Kepler cards with HDMI 1.4 through a driver hack, so I can test out at least looking at the Windows desktop in 4K this weekend. I wonder if I can make my GTX 680 cry by trying to play a game in 4K.

If I decide to keep this TV, i'm also looking at the FMP-X10 player which Sony claims has over 200 movies available to buy or rent from their Video Unlimited 4K service.

Is burn in a problem these days? Buying that Sony 50" within the next couple days and I'd hate to get as Estus Flask stuck in the corner lol.
