Are you saying the w802 is the best I can get for around $1000 even if other TVs list better specs?
I do want to point out that TV was on sale, used to be $1600 (same as the Sony). Actually I think the Sony lists micro dimming which isn't as good as local dimming (the LG). I'm hearing mixed things.
Game-Standard, Original makes it look a bit crap! I've got the W6 and W8 next to each other as my wife uses the 42W, and the blacks actually look a little better compared to the W8.
Both superb for gaming though.
Heads up to everyone considering the Sony 55" W900 - it just dropped $300 to $1998 at Amazon and Best Buy:

Got mine ordered for delivery on the 18th - can't wait!
Sony w802a has that featureBit of a sily question but what HDTVs are able to have a webcamera connected to them for say video chatting via internet?
. This TV, 1K more than what I wanted to spend on a TV for the next gen, shot to the top of my list from everything I read about it.
Sony w802a has that feature
I have my w802a hooked up to my computer and placed a totally black image on it. It didn't look anything like black. It was like a shade of blue, whether that is because of the backlight or whatever, I don't know. Next to my computer monitor, the difference was night and day. Hell, any other device I have can display better blacks. It's absolutely insane.I wasn't saying that one TV is better than the other (I have no idea) just that it likely doesn't actually have local dimming zones behind the panel, and is likely an edge-lit model like most other models. They've purposefully made the marketing hard to figure out so that no one realizes they're paying for an inferior technology (in exchange for the thinness).
Someone else will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Samsung 8000 LCD's were the only TV's even close to your price range with actual local dimming LED zones and not just edge-lit shenanigans.

Have you tried playing with the RGB range settings that Lima just posted above?
Also, on Nvidia cards you can enable full range RGB using this utility:
http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?p=83
Once toggled it will require a reboot. For some reason Nvidia doesn't have this as an option in the control panel.
They do have this in their control panel but just for video playback for some reason. Not for the desktop.
Hey, GAF. just picked up a Pioneer Kuro PDP 5020FD 50 inch for $600. It works (picture is a bit dark(could be normal IDK?), and a slightly redish), but otherwise it is awesome.
So I'm thinking of getting one of these budget TV's.
Samsung LED 40" FullHD UN40F5000
or
LG LED 39" Full HD Smart TV 39LN5700
I know they're not the greatest TV's ever and I don't really care about the Smart TV features.
The samsung one is $20 cheaper.
Which one would you recommend? We just want it for the basics like gaming, movies etc..
Definitely go for the Samsung. Input lag is around 28-30ms which is great. Avoid LG at all costs.
Quick question: Have you checked out 50" plasma sets since you're in the $500+ range? You can get some amazing, high response, beautiful picture TVs from Dell and in that range.
My LG 50pa5500 (last year's model) is my greatest gaming joy and I can't recommend it enough...less than $600 shipped.
I have an ATI graphics card with catalyst.Limited vs Full RGB.
If you use it as a PC monitor you need to adjust the dynamic range on your TV and PC so that both match.
For PC use the preffered setting would be 0-255 Full RGB for output of your PC graphic card and you also need to adjust the TV's dynamic range under Home > Settings > Picture & Display > Pro Picture Setup > Dynamic Range.
If you then put up a black image the LED's will totally shut off, leaving you with a pure black image. That is when you know that you have set up everything correctly.
I ALWAYS find Plasma too dark. As though someone's turned the brightness or the contrast right down. I prefer LED, nice and bright, black is black and white is white (not grey), colors are vibrant.
Anyone have recent experience with this Samsung 60" LED F6300?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BCGRVN0/?tag=neogaf0e-20
I brought a thumb drive with some game screens to Frys to test it. It looked pretty good, but it was a small sample of images. Blacks around the edges of the screen were somewhat lit up. Hard to tell how big a deal it'll really be.
My plan is to pick up a VT60 this weekend, exciting times.
any good deals for the panasonic TC-P50ST60?
well it is a bit old so the drop in brightness comes from the hours on the display so that is normal. The slight redish tint (can be seen in black areas easily) is also normal for a Kuro after a certain amount of time. This can be fixed though.
I've been looking at this one on my short list.
It's been pretty favorably reviewed:

Here's the AVS owner's thread on it. They seem to like it:

The F6300 and the F6350 is the same thing. The F6350 is the Costco/BJs version. Speaking of, BJs has this TV and the 60" will be $1300 for members come 9/16. I'm looking at the 55" version that will be $999.
Seems to have good input lag, good picture, lots of nice Samsung features without the 3D driving the price up.
After obsessing over finding the right TV for me for way too long (in the end its the 55W900A) I'm having trouble pulling the trigger. I do have enough money, though it certainly is a lot of it, but I'm having a bit of a hard time convincing myself that I really need to replace my 5 year old 42" CCFL LCD. The picture is that bad and I've gotten by just find without 3D and a huge TV for this gen...
I know its a bit bigger and will have a better picture, but unlike some other tech upgrades I'm having a real difficult time jumping on this one. Pretty funny given how much research I've put into it
Just checked consumer reports on the Samsung F6300 mentioned above. It's the 32-inch version, but they gave it a 65 / 100. The highest rated 32-inch got a 66.
Remote ease of use - Very good
Energy cost/yr ($) - 17
Viewing Angle - Good
On-Screen menu ease of use - Excellent
HD Picture Quality - Excellent
Sound Quality - Fair
Versatility - Very Good
Highlights are image detail, color accuracy and minimal motion blur. It gets pinged on "slight backlight non-uniformity" and limited viewing angle.
For comparison:
Samsung 55" F6400 - 67/100
Samsung 55" ES6500 - 72/100
Samsung 55" ES8000 - 74/100
edit: Even with my brighter room, I'm starting to waffle and think 65" s64 plasma from CostCo. I REALLY wish they had a 60" version. I love that the s64 has the anti-glare screen that the ST60 has.
The only issue with that is it's sold out mostly and I don't have a costco membership right now so it'd cost me an extra $50 to get it.And the 65" is a little more than I want to pay.
If the S64 came in a 60" version, I'm pretty sure I would have purchased that. But since it didn't, I got the 65, and I'm actually kind of glad. It's huge, but it's like going to the movies in my house. Really happy I got one ordered before they sold out again.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a 65". Holy shit that's huge. It's the cost. I'm really trying to keep to my ~$1k budget.
How much did it run you if you don't mind me asking? Can't get any info off the costco site and the nearest one to me is ~20 min away. If they don't require card on entry that is. BJs doesn't but I've never been to a Costco
Well, I already had a Costco membership, which if you don't have one, will be an added cost if you hope to purchase from there.
I ordered mine online because there were none in stock in any of the stores near me. Luckily, shipping was free, but I paid the extra $35 for white glove delivery where they bring it in your home and set it up.
That, plus tax, left me at around $1420 total (the 65" is $1299 before tax). The set is no longer available on their website.
If you're really trying to stick to your 1K budget, why not go for the S60 for $999 on Amazon? Same as the S64 but without the added filter. I'd go for that if you feel like you can control the lighting in the room.
I think I'm going to return my W802a for the Panasonic ST60. It's $100 more but comes with a 3-year warranty from the store so it evens out.
I know it apparently sucks for input lag, but I don't think I'll notice it.... hopefully. What I might notice is this sort of grain that plasma TVs seem to have (from store demos). And also, I know somebody told me not to use this as a computer monitor, but if I alternate my wallpaper every 10 minutes and only use it for like a couple hours a day, will I be alright for burn-in?
I can't deal with the black levels on the w802a. So what about the S60? It's cheaper and has less input lag.Yeesh, don't do it man. Keep the W802a, it has one of the least amount of input lag for that size class. The lag is only 17ms (a little over 1 frame) which is excellent for a tv that size. The Panasonic you are thinking of getting has 75ms input delay which is atrocious. You WILL notice it.
