Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Are you saying the w802 is the best I can get for around $1000 even if other TVs list better specs?

I do want to point out that TV was on sale, used to be $1600 (same as the Sony). Actually I think the Sony lists micro dimming which isn't as good as local dimming (the LG). I'm hearing mixed things.

I wasn't saying that one TV is better than the other (I have no idea) just that it likely doesn't actually have local dimming zones behind the panel, and is likely an edge-lit model like most other models. They've purposefully made the marketing hard to figure out so that no one realizes they're paying for an inferior technology (in exchange for the thinness).

Someone else will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Samsung 8000 LCD's were the only TV's even close to your price range with actual local dimming LED zones and not just edge-lit shenanigans.

Game-Standard, Original makes it look a bit crap! I've got the W6 and W8 next to each other as my wife uses the 42W, and the blacks actually look a little better compared to the W8.
Both superb for gaming though.

Yeah, not sure I'd there is any occasion I'd use game-original.

This is tough. I honestly haven't done any console gaming in ages. I'm all PC these days. And looking at all these TVs the best option really looks like the Panasonic st60 except for that awful input lag. I honestly can't see myself play any serious twitch games any time soon and that great picture quality is hard to ignore.

I also kind of want a bigger TV but am reluctant to break my 1k budget. 55 or 60 would be lovely.

Such a pain. I really have come close to just pushing buy on the Sony 50r550a though. Still seems like one of the best values for the money.

Heads up to everyone considering the Sony 55" W900 - it just dropped $300 to $1998 at Amazon and Best Buy:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWKBZ0M/?tag=neogaf0e-20

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/55"+Cla...82642697&skuId=8653079&st=sony 900a&cp=1&lp=1

Got mine ordered for delivery on the 18th - can't wait!

My CamelCameCamel entry notified emailed me, What predicament. This TV, 1K more than what I wanted to spend on a TV for the next gen, shot to the top of my list from everything I read about it. Today, I'm not ready to buy it. In November I'd have the money. If this isn't a permanent drop, I hope the price returns in November.

However, if I selected the last possible delivery date in October, would they charge when it ships, like they do with every other item on Amazon?

Bit of a sily question but what HDTVs are able to have a webcamera connected to them for say video chatting via internet?

. This TV, 1K more than what I wanted to spend on a TV for the next gen, shot to the top of my list from everything I read about it.

Kinda my dilemma too. I had plans to go buy a 60" LG, but after reading reviews and such and experience different qualities of sets in peoples homes over the last months I realize I want to go high quality or just hold on to my old TV and wait a few more years. The W900A hits all the right buttons for me, but is $1K more than I was looking to spend.

More and more I'm thinking "Screw it" and grabbing it and some $500 speakers and locking myself indoors for the next gen.

Anyone else have issues with Panasonic 3D glasses not turning off? I guess I could pop the battery out but I still don't even really know how to get into the battery compartment.

Edit: my wife figured it out lol

I just saw my first 4K TV at Brandsmart today. It was Sony's XBR with the speakers on the side.

I said wow. 4K + OLED = Tears of joy will be shed.

I have my w802a hooked up to my computer and placed a totally black image on it. It didn't look anything like black. It was like a shade of blue, whether that is because of the backlight or whatever, I don't know. Next to my computer monitor, the difference was night and day. Hell, any other device I have can display better blacks. It's absolutely insane.

Now, when I played some Wii and tried Muramasa, when I got to a black scene it wasn't as bad. It wasn't good by any means, but it was definitely decent. Could that be the micro-dimming? For some reason the micro-dimming doesn't work when I use it as a monitor, but when I play games it sometimes kicks in?

Limited vs Full RGB.

If you use it as a PC monitor you need to adjust the dynamic range on your TV and PC so that both match.

For PC use the preffered setting would be 0-255 Full RGB for output of your PC graphic card and you also need to adjust the TV's dynamic range under Home > Settings > Picture & Display > Pro Picture Setup > Dynamic Range.

If you then put up a black image the LED's will totally shut off, leaving you with a pure black image. That is when you know that you have set up everything correctly.

Pimping my 65" Mitsubishi DLP from 2009, rarely see a picture that looks as good. Just replaced the bulb about 2 months ago, looks like it did out of the box again, so good for gaming.

Have you tried playing with the RGB range settings that Lima just posted above?

Also, on Nvidia cards you can enable full range RGB using this utility:

http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?p=83

Once toggled it will require a reboot. For some reason Nvidia doesn't have this as an option in the control panel.

So I'm thinking of getting one of these budget TV's.

Samsung LED 40" FullHD UN40F5000

or

LG LED 39" Full HD Smart TV 39LN5700

I know they're not the greatest TV's ever and I don't really care about the Smart TV features.
The samsung one is $20 cheaper.

Which one would you recommend? We just want it for the basics like gaming, movies etc..

They do have this in their control panel but just for video playback for some reason. Not for the desktop.

Ah you're right, I just found it. I can confirm that utility by Durante does work on the desktop/games. Although sometimes the setting will get overridden and it will have to be toggled again.

Hey, GAF. just picked up a Pioneer Kuro PDP 5020FD 50 inch for $600. It works (picture is a bit dark(could be normal IDK?), and a slightly redish), but otherwise it is awesome.

well it is a bit old so the drop in brightness comes from the hours on the display so that is normal. The slight redish tint (can be seen in black areas easily) is also normal for a Kuro after a certain amount of time. This can be fixed though.

Quick question: Have you checked out 50" plasma sets since you're in the $500+ range? You can get some amazing, high response, beautiful picture TVs from Dell and in that range.

My LG 50pa5500 (last year's model) is my greatest gaming joy and I can't recommend it enough...less than $600 shipped.

Definitely go for the Samsung. Input lag is around 28-30ms which is great. Avoid LG at all costs.

Is LG that bad?

We don't have much TV room here so 40 its perfect for us.

Added a new possibility to my short list.
Panasonic TC-L58E60.

58" for 1000 is good by itself. But it seems to be reviewed pretty well and have a pretty low latency game mode. Had trouble pinning down a firm number though.

Drops the useless 3d and gives me a little more size for the money. Its definitely near the top of the list now.

I have an ATI graphics card with catalyst.

I set the dynamic range to Full on the TV. On Catalyst I set the pixel format to RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB).

Nothing changed.

EDIT: If I set the wallpaper to a pure black, the screen does dim -- it still doesn't look black at all though. When I move my mouse over to the screen the screen lights up even more. Ugh. If this is the best it can do, I'm returning it.

I ALWAYS find Plasma too dark. As though someone's turned the brightness or the contrast right down. I prefer LED, nice and bright, black is black and white is white (not grey), colors are vibrant.

Anyone have recent experience with this Samsung 60" LED F6300?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BCGRVN0/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I brought a thumb drive with some game screens to Frys to test it. It looked pretty good, but it was a small sample of images. Blacks around the edges of the screen were somewhat lit up. Hard to tell how big a deal it'll really be.

I've been looking at this one on my short list.

It's been pretty favorably reviewed:
http://reviews.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/samsung-tv/samsung-un55f6300.html

Here's the AVS owner's thread on it. They seem to like it:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1467138/official-samsung-un-f6350-series-led-tv-owners-thread/180

The F6300 and the F6350 is the same thing. The F6350 is the Costco/BJs version. Speaking of, BJs has this TV and the 60" will be $1300 for members come 9/16. I'm looking at the 55" version that will be $999.

Seems to have good input lag, good picture, lots of nice Samsung features without the 3D driving the price up.

Ok. I just changed my order from the Samsung 60f8500 (plasma) to the Samsung 60f8000 (LED lcd).

It was a matter of how I like to think I'd use it versus how it actually gets used. A LCD just makes more sense for how we will use it and the f8000 is definitely spectacular (and has less input lag for gaming). Would have considered the Sony 900 as well but it is a bit smaller than I'd like, doesn't look quite as nice (to me) and doesn't have the evolution kit.

Should arrive Thursday...can't wait!!!

My plan is to pick up a VT60 this weekend, exciting times.

Didn't go as planned, my idea was to rent a suitable vehicle to go pick up the TV myself at the store, couldn't find one that was available at the time. I ordered it on the Internet instead, will arrive on Thursday.

That is what I have read.

Just out of curiosity. Could I have gotten a TV with better picture quality for the same/less price?

Thanks for the info,

A 55" for $999 sounds like a sweet deal. Unfortunately, there are no BJs around here. I think I'll go ahead and get this as soon as I find the right price.

After obsessing over finding the right TV for me for way too long (in the end its the 55W900A) I'm having trouble pulling the trigger. I do have enough money, though it certainly is a lot of it, but I'm having a bit of a hard time convincing myself that I really need to replace my 5 year old 42" CCFL LCD. The picture isn't that bad and I've gotten by just fine without 3D and a huge TV for this gen...

I know its a bit bigger and will have a better picture, but unlike some other tech upgrades I'm having a real difficult time jumping on this one. Pretty funny given how much research I've put into it

Well, it is a lot of money. However, everything I've read about the 900A leads me to believe it would be an excellent purchase for any gamer or video enthusiast. Low lag, great design and spectacular picture...doesn't really get better than that.

Just checked consumer reports on the Samsung F6300 mentioned above. It's the 32-inch version, but they gave it a 65 / 100. The highest rated 32-inch got a 66.

Remote ease of use - Very good
Energy cost/yr ($) - 17
Viewing Angle - Good
On-Screen menu ease of use - Excellent
HD Picture Quality - Excellent
Sound Quality - Fair
Versatility - Very Good

Highlights are image detail, color accuracy and minimal motion blur. It gets pinged on "slight backlight non-uniformity" and limited viewing angle.

For comparison:
Samsung 55" F6400 - 67/100
Samsung 55" ES6500 - 72/100
Samsung 55" ES8000 - 74/100

Those numbers seem pretty poor, but the Excellent Picture quality seems good. You said no other 32" TV got higher than a 66? Wow. They must rate pretty hard.

Out of curiosity, do they have a review for the Sony KDL-XX550A or the Panasonic TC-LXXE60?

Those seem to be the closest in price and competition to the Samsung F6300 or F6400 in LCD screens, right around that sweet spot of $1000-$1200.

I wouldn't mind subscribing for a month as I really want to get as educated as possible with the TV purchase but I wish there was a way to see a list of the TVs they have reviewed before I do so.

edit: Even with my brighter room, I'm starting to waffle and think 65" s64 plasma from CostCo. I REALLY wish they had a 60" version. I love that the s64 has the anti-glare screen that the ST60 has.

The only issue with that is it's sold out mostly and I don't have a costco membership right now so it'd cost me an extra $50 to get it. :( And the 65" is a little more than I want to pay.

If the S64 came in a 60" version, I'm pretty sure I would have purchased that. But since it didn't, I got the 65, and I'm actually kind of glad. It's huge, but it's like going to the movies in my house. Really happy I got one ordered before they sold out again.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a 65". Holy shit that's huge. It's the cost. I'm really trying to keep to my ~$1k budget.

How much did it run you if you don't mind me asking? Can't get any info off the costco site and the nearest one to me is ~20 min away. If they don't require card on entry that is. BJs doesn't but I've never been to a Costco

Well, I already had a Costco membership, which if you don't have one, will be an added cost if you hope to purchase from there.

I ordered mine online because there were none in stock in any of the stores near me. Luckily, shipping was free, but I paid the extra $35 for white glove delivery where they bring it in your home and set it up.

That, plus tax, left me at around $1420 total (the 65" is $1299 before tax). The set is no longer available on their website.

If you're really trying to stick to your 1K budget, why not go for the S60 for $999 on Amazon? Same as the S64 but without the added filter. I'd go for that if you feel like you can control the lighting in the room.

And therein lies the rub. I'm honestly not sure how it will fare. It's generally a pretty bright room and my current TV has a matte screen so I've never even noticed it. Maybe I'll move my PC monitor into the room for a day or something and see if the glare from the glossy screen is overwhelming.

I think I'm going to return my W802a for the Panasonic ST60. It's $100 more but comes with a 3-year warranty from the store so it evens out.

I know it apparently sucks for input lag, but I don't think I'll notice it.... hopefully. What I might notice is this sort of grain that plasma TVs seem to have (from store demos). And also, I know somebody told me not to use this as a computer monitor, but if I alternate my wallpaper every 10 minutes and only use it for like a couple hours a day, will I be alright for burn-in?

Yeesh, don't do it man. Keep the W802a, it has one of the least amount of input lag for that size class. The lag is only 17ms (a little over 1 frame) which is excellent for a tv that size. The Panasonic you are thinking of getting has 75ms input delay which is atrocious. You WILL notice it.

I can't deal with the black levels on the w802a. So what about the S60? It's cheaper and has less input lag.

This guy has done some tests between the ST30 (16ms according to HDTVtest) and ST60 (47+ms according to HDTVtest) and from watching the videos it looks like a minimal difference. Check out some of his videos, read his comments and decide for yourself.

http://www.youtube.com/user/brucezweitausendneun/videos

It's fine to plug it in to your PC now and again, just be careful and don't leave static things on for hours and hours on end, watch and cycle through various content, etc etc. Just start out with some short sessions and see what happens.

The S60 is a good choice too, some people here bought one. It's basically just worse in a bright environment with much reflections/sunlight/lightsources due to not having a filter.

Yeah I was thinking of getting the ST60 in a few weeks too, is the input lag really 75ms bad? I briefly seen somewhere the reading of it was inaccurate, anyone know what the current situation is?

I was either going to get the 50ST60 or the 60S60, but I think 60" is a little overkill for my living area and I like 3D. Decisions mang, decisions.

edit: Just seen dmr87's post, it looks like the ST60 is around 47ms, I think I can live with that. Any ST60 owners here having issues with lag?

The "grain" is most likely dithering. You are seeing it in a store because you would typically be standing much closer to the tv and the tv is probably set to torch mode. At home with proper settings at normal viewing distance you shouldn't see it.
