Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I was planning on buying (from Best Buy as thats where we'll get a discount) a Panasonic TC-P50S60....but the store said they were out and couldn't order anymore.....

I'm now starting from scratch again as to what a good gaming TV around that price ($699) is. I've read back some number of pages in this thread and couldn't really parse any good info out of it.....any recommendations? :-)

You must not be looking too hard.

I've never seen a Plasma before, but are all those Image Retention "problems" something that serious or are all those complainers just young'uns that never used a CRT?

CRT TVs also had image retention and that never bothered me. And you could get permantent image retention if you abused it too, but that never ever happened to me.

Are plasma's IR "problems" similar to CRT TV's or are they really more serious/delicate?

People that have suffered burn in aren't just "young uns". I'd say they have a legitimate reason to complain if there was something permanently burned into the screen. I think burn in is rare on recent models but IR can still be present.

I never said people that have suffered burn in are young'uns, I asked if people complaining about image retention are young'uns that never used a CRT because that's something that totally happened with CRTs. And we gamed for years on those things with games that had very permanent HUDs.

And then I proceeded to ask if it's a similar problem or if it's more serious. Because if it's a similar problem and not a serious one, then I don't think it's that big of a deal.

You could check Costco. They sell an S64 which is an S60 with an anti-glare filter.

Panasonic VT60 is 1795 with free shipping and no tax at B&H photo....I don't know if my buy urges can be held back....my wife is gonna kill me.

cross posting this in the xbox one launch thread - not sure if its an xbox one issue or something that needs to be modified with my new tv (panasonic s60).

problem: when playing on the xbox, the blacks have a lot of noise in the form of green pixels dancing about. it looks like tv "snow" but only with black and green pixels. its not super noticeable, except during transitions/loading in which the whole screen is black - but its obviously something i'd like to correct. it also seems to have gotten a bit worse over the last few days. i dont recall even seeing it until a few days ago and now its rather obvious.

any ideas to what the cause may be and how to fix it?

Your brightness setting is too high. Lower it until the pixel dancing just vanishes on a black screen. What youre seeing is dithering as it's trying to render black as a dark gray cause the setting is too high. Different sources will req diff settings usually, especially xboxs.

Plasmas are more delicate. I'm still holding on to my Sony XBR960, because the black levels, lag (non-existent) and color are still unmatched. I want a bigger screen and if I jump it'll be to the KDL-55W900A which is the best LCD picture that I've seen with low lag.

IRs are not that big a deal. They go away within minutes or even less if you don't stick with one source that has the same logo or graphic for too long. Even if you do, it'll go away anyway by simply switching to a different source. For example, you can watch movies with letterboxed black bars and they may leave IRs. But just switch to regular TV and watch it disappear after a bit.

Do the proper thing and don't keep your plasma in torch mode and don't have a giant bold logo/HUD in the same place 24/7. If you're gonna use it as a PC gaming machine monitor and you sometimes leave the desktop on, turn on a screensaver.

Just do it. These TVs are going away (you can't find the S60 or ST60 anywhere) and they'll be no suitable replacement for a few years. I know a few people with the VT60 and their only regret is not getting the ZT60. What nice problems to have :)

as a follow up,

that did appear to be the issue. it wasnt all that high (20-25?) but lowering it to 15 or so and now i dont see it at all. odd that it only arose as an issue with the xbox. i probably was changing settings using the tv image as a baseline.

Why is this sony so cheap? They come up to 70inch in size. Is the picture quality that bad or because their not "smart tvs"
Will this tv be good for movies/cable. I need a nice big tv for everyday cable/movies. It will be used a lot. No gaming, my gaming is on my PC.
I want a 55 or 60inch tv for movies/sports/cable.

My top 3 that I am considering right now.
1. Sony KDL-55W900A
2. Samsung UNF8000
3. Panasonic TC-PVT60 (will long time of cable/sports/movies be a problem?)

Unless you would recommend another?
Price range is up to $2300.
Screen size: 55inch or bigger.

So since the Panasonic TC-P50S60 doesn't seem to be available anymore is there anything comparable?

I know it was about $699...I'm willing to pay a little more for a comparable tv....any suggestions at all? Thank you!

As a recent W900A owner who did a lot of research, I concur, get the VT60. If you were gaming I'd have said otherwise.

Found a ZT60 for 2300....$500 more....what to do?!!? Arrrgggghhh

I'm considering selling my Pioneer Kuro Elite Pro-111FD and picking up a VT60. How crazy am I?

Went ahead and bought a 32" Samsung UE32F5000 for the bed room. Anyone have any advice for the settings to get the best out of it? Mainly gaming on this TV probably.

Panasonic VT60 is 1795 with free shipping and no tax at B&H photo....I don't know if my buy urges can be held back....my wife is gonna kill me.

About to buy this. I got like 10+ emails when I listed my 50" Panasonic S64 for sale on Craigslist last week. People were ready to buy at $550... so $1800 - $550 means I'd only be paying a little bit to upgrade. I'm so down :)

Lot of people say the Kuro Elite is still a better panel than Panasonics VT & ZT line.
It really isn't.

It's comparing apples to oranges though. It's binary driving method versus contiguous.

VT and ZT win when it comes to actual image quality and all the modern bells and whistles, they're simply better. They also win big time in anti-glare filter.

They slightly lose against the best Kuro at blacks alone, nothing else.

Isn't the Kuro TVs really old in its tech tho? They don't do 1080p right?
They do, they were top range 2008 tech!

But the thing is, their panel driving method is very aggressive, the thing is contiguous so it can only do 14 gradations, against panasonic 30.000 steps of gradation possible on a VT60 (even the lowest panel out there from Panasonic can pull 6.000) because they're binary based.

Anyway, this means Pioneer sets have to work their asses off big time, interpolating the possible colors they have every refresh so they can create the end result you expect.

If the driver wasn't an over achiever like that you'd have huge dithering on everything; the price to pay is that if you look at them working closeby you notice that the pixels are everything but stable; not to say VT60 doesn't vary according to impulse out of 100% white, red, blue and green but it's nowhere as aggressive. That gives it way better image quality, it's simply more stable.

That kind of stress is huge for the panel though, and thus, I can actually believe a VT60 to last the advertised 100.000 hours, a Kuro? not so much. In fact I've heard about uneven aging of the pixels on it, which is to be expected actually.

They're still engineering wonders of their time, but they were making more compromises than current plasmas in order to deliver, and that extra mile... Is stress for the hardware.

In the low end 30 to 40 inch Televisions I am looking at the following:
Sony Bravia LED, Samsung LED and Insignia LED.

Any reason to go with either over the others for gaming?

what in the? I'd kill for that panel, and I have a 5010FD. Keep it until it dies - it'll still probably outperform most if not all panels today, properly calibrated.

my 5010 was $3K in 2008 and it was last year's model at that point. I think the 111FD's were at least $4K

It's ISF calibrated. I love the thing, but I just wonder if getting the new bells and whistles would compensate (3D) not seeing that gorgeous gold "Elite" stare at me every day.

lol. well, if you want 3D then you want 3D. Personally I have a Panny ST30 in the bedroom and I've used 3D about twice in two years.

so far as bells and whistles - almost every device I have input into the TV has all the apps I need, so that's a moot point.

I think at this point the only model I can think of that bests the Pio's black levels, or matches them at least, is the ZT60.

After searching all day I really can't find anything close to the Panasonic 50 inch that is now unavailable everywhere.

Sad times as I just saved up enough for it and nothing really seems comparable.

Which Panny? If it's the S60 you were looking for then maybe consider the Samsung F5300/5500.

Yeah the S60........I will check out this Samsung! Do you own one?

This TV would be primarily used for gaming, I'm reading that the input lag is pretty bad.....anybody have experience with this?

I'll echo what was already said: keep it until it dies. As a former 101FD owner, I seriously regret not keeping that panel when I was shopping for a larger television. If you want a larger TV go for it, but keep the Kuro and move it to another room.

Unless you've owned one you just don't know -- there's simply no replacement available for the last/best Kuros when it comes to pure picture quality.

I'm not necessarily out for a bigger HDTV. The consensus is pretty clear! I definitely finding myself saying "damn!" at the IQ of my Kuro, even after having it for four years now.
