To be fair, Microsoft caught a lot of heat from the obvious crowd when Xbox increased in price. Vicious fanboy cycle.

Some of that heat was for understanding that those price increases would kill the already bad hardware sales of the Xbox Series console in their best country. But if anybody thought Phil increased the price of the Xbox Series X and S do to greed, that would be STUPID!

Honestly the way i see it is they put themselves into a spiral the moment they announced the xbox one.

Everything after that has been strictly damage control for whats now essentially a dying console (specifically console, not platform. I'd give them just another gen or two before they go full-sega)

It could have been as you say. After the phenomenal Xbox 360 rally, people had a right to expect a lot. With Xbox One MS devalued the brand. They did so badly that they lost all the momentum they had gained over the previous years.
They started the current gen properly imo, but over time they became too overextended and Gamepass dependent, blurring the line between consoles and PC, making them more and more redundant in the process. Adding to this, they also become victims of political decisions and economic turmoil.

However, i do not wish them to end up like Sega, it would be a huge blow to the gaming industry and the consumers.

The question would be, does the PS5 make a profit? If after the tarrifs it doesn't, then a price increase is pretty much unavoidable as I don't think any company is willing to sell their hardware at a loss anymore regardless of quarterly profits.
