PlayStation 5 getting price increases in America starting tomorrow Aug 21

And console supporters always exclude the fact a PC does more than games. It can do everything else a console cant do.

So when any console lover says his plastic box is cheaper and can do decent gaming, all a PC gamer has to do is say he pays more but can do decent gaming too + every other computer task. And no online fees, cheaper games on Steam/GOG/CDkeys, mods, more settings to tweak the game how they want, gamepad + m/kb support, and gaming on a monitor doesnt tie up the TV which vast majority of console gamers do. I dont game a lot on my laptop, but it's sweet that I sit here and game or do the net, while having sports on the TV in the background.

Oh forgot. PC gaming has just about every recent MS and Sony game too which adds to the gaming library.

all in good fun

The amount of meltdown from Sony fanboys here is out of the charts.

The system is 5 years old. We've always seen price drops as these things get cheaper to make over time. Not buying their reasoning.

Me neither. Technology is suppose to get outdated and cheap. PS5 doesn't even have a Machine Learning hardware inbuild.

Not to mention, Sony increase PS5 price in countries that don't even have tariff.

IMO they are just copy/paste Nintendo homework/business decisions without actually a reason.

And for those saying they had to do it;

The most profitable generation ever. They've been profitable right from the start of the gen, never happened with any other generation. They had to have been making a profit from the hardware right from the start unlike every other gen.

Multibillion/trillion dollar companies convincing fans they had to do it...

Always....

Whenever Playstation is going to give news... IT'S BAD NEWS.

ALWAYS.

its time Already to make the MEME of every Playstation news is always bad news.

The main reason is one insecure man's ego. He knows this hurts other countries(in addition to our own citizens), and having other countries come crawling to him hoping to work out a deal makes him feel big. People need to realize that nothing he does is ever about logic. It's about making him feel bigger and better than who he considers his opponents. Look at everything through that lens and his ideas start to make a lot more sense.

If this was truly about the people, then when prices start to rise on more things and the collective economic situations of Americans start to decline, then anyone in good faith would admit wrongdoing. But admitting wrongdoing isn't in this dude's vocabulary. His philosophy is to never admit wrongness, ever, and to double down no matter how wrong. And if data or facts contradict what he says then to just call it all fake. The entire administration is just one big ego inflation bubble to capitulate to one man. But I honestly don't begrudge him for it as much as I do those who enable him and who could have put a stop to this months ago. I don't blame crazy as much as I blame cowards who enable crazy.
As you say it certainly does make more sense through that lens...

however I can't help but feel that the impact of doing these tariffs will lower consumption and with it will come a reduced GDP for the US, which if true the only benefit I can think of for someone as President to do that is if you had wealthy powerful friends that are finding it hard to decrease the masses' percentage of global wealth and you want to temporarily disrupt consumption lowering top company stock values, and then buy up those companies' stocks at reduced value before consumption returns to normal with a new administration.

In the gamer nexus report video on the impact of tariffs on US made PC parts the motherboard component list sources I think crystalised the point that this strategy would be decades away from achieving the claimed objective.

I mean even with this news for PlayStation if Sony decided to manufacture PS5's or PS6's in the US, with them making a fully automated factor in the US equal to their PS5 world first one in Japan it won't deliver any more manufacturing jobs to the US, and all the components will still be imported from China, and I doubt growing bamboo at the factor for highly renewable ecologically friendly packaging, like they do in Taiwan is even possible in the US.

It's true though. That money didn't suddenly came back to their pockets after they were cancelled friend.
Not saying this is the entire reason for the price increases. But the amount of failed GaaS attemps probably is one of factors, unless you're telling me they didn't waste a single dime on those bunch of failed projects (which they probably did).
Exactly, its not like those CEO's will cover their GAAS initiative failure from their own pockets, some1 gotta pay for their stupid mistakes, and unfortunately it will be ps5/ps5pr0 users, aka their customers.

Who really knows how much cash they drowned in all of those failed GAAS games(H2 is one and only excetpion), maybe 2b usd total, maybe even more? Its not concord alone which was awful from financial pov, its many other games on top of concord too.

Some were made for years(ofc not for free) and canceled w/o even having a reveal trailer(like tlou factions), some like marathon were close to shipping yet so terrible that they were delayed w/o even a release date. Remember marathon was supposed to come out 23rd september, so barely a month from now, and delay info came on june 17th only :P

We have the power. If we don't buy, they won't sell, and they will lower the price. It will never happen because people can't unite on anything.
The console market isn't growing. Price increases will only shrink that market. If there are fewer people willing to buy consoles, prices will continue to go up to offset that loss.

The price increase will be a major blow to the PS5 pro, it already wasn't selling well.

Wouldn't be surprised if this also pushes the PS6's release farther out.

Sorry fellow americans but it's your turn after europeans and japanese people paid the bills twice already to delay this moment for you.
Nintendo will be next with the Switch 2.
Unfortunately the world is in the hands of idiots taking decisions and companies want to continue to make profits.

Exactly. They didn't have to do it but they saw the other guy do it and they did too.

The truth hurts huh, pal? I'm sure every corporation on Earth are just greedy POS and it has nothing to do with an unnecessary rise of cost on businesses that came from one A-hole.

Here's a chart showing the average U.S. tariff rate from 1975 to 2025. Notice the dramatic spike in 2025 to 14.5%, the highest in nearly 90 years:

  • From 1975 to 2016, tariffs steadily declined from about 5.5% to 1.5%, reflecting decades of trade liberalization.
  • A slight increase occurred during the 2018–2021 trade tensions, peaking around 3.0%.
  • In 2025, tariffs surged to 14.5%, driven by sweeping trade policy changes and new blanket tariffs.

Triple threat:
1. Price increases due to tariffs
To the shock of no one. It was bound to happen due to the tariffs.
You ain't kidding.

This gen has been completely fucked in that regard. People who bought consoles in 2020 spent up to $100 or so LESS than someone buying the console tomorrow would.
The mock surprise and outrage tickles me, anyone with at least half a brain knew this was coming, sucks but it is what it is. Buy your consoles at launch for the cheapest entry point lol.

If you bought the PS5 at launch for $499, that is $623 today when accounting for inflation.

This is a discount.

You fools realize that both Nintendo and MS, plus other non tech companies like auto companies are increasing prices for the same reason right? Yet you can't help it but be console warriors!

I think its less console warring and just people laughing at you because you're going way overboard supplying all these graphs and shit in order to defend a billion dollar company as if your life depended on it or something.

I'm sure every corporation on Earth are just greedy POS and it has nothing to do with an unnecessary rise of cost on businesses that came from one A-hole.

All corporations on Earth are still greedy pieces of shit regardless of this tariff situation. Why is this even up for debate? You're acting as if these corporations have never increased prices on their products before and they only do it when forced to due to volatile market conditions (or as you say - an asshole) and not out of greed. Maybe not your intention, but it comes of that way and i think that seems to be what people have a problem with. Its probably true that the price increase had to be done due to tariffs, but it doesn't mean people should just blindly take Sony's word for it.
