PlayStation 5 getting price increases in America starting tomorrow Aug 21

I did exactly the same thing and this is how i feel now:

And we were supposed to be "idiots".

First console generation in my entire 48 years where the console prices got MORE expensive as the generation progressed.

Tariffs seem like a convenient excuse because if it were truly tariffs they wouldn't have raised prices significantly elsewhere. Let's not forget Sony raised the prices of PS5's in Canada, Mexico, Europe, the U.K., Australia, Japan, and China back in 2022, long before the threat of tariffs existed. They raised the price in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand a SECOND time this last April, before tariffs had any meaningful impact.

Tariffs are a scapegoat. As it is with both Nintendo and Microsoft, this is greed and seeing how far they can push the envelope before consumers push back.

i find it ironic that the two leads in console making only bumped up their systems by a max of $50

Whereas a certain last place green platform said "fuck it, $100"

SERIOUSLY!!!! But watch some dopes in this thread blame Sony and say they are just being a greedy corporation. As if a 20-30% tariff increase wouldn't change the cost of an imported product.
To be fair, Microsoft caught a lot of heat from the obvious crowd when Xbox increased in price. Vicious fanboy cycle.

Those price hikes related to TSMC having no real competition anymore, Apple splurging on buying up all the lowest lithography node capacity and demand for wafers for AI adding more pressure on capacity forcing wafer prices to rise IIRC.

edit: and all that along with node gains being harder to achieve and more costly.

Good news to non-Americans. The price increase is only for USA.

(Reuters) -Sony (SONY) will raise prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by around $50 from Thursday, as the Japanese conglomerate navigates a slow recovery in the videogame market while U.S. tariffs threaten to raise costs.

All three PlayStation 5 consoles will see a similar price hike, with the most expensive PS5 Pro version expected to cost $749.99, the company said in a blog post on Wednesday.

The price changes come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from global manufacturing hubs such as China and Japan, leading to fears of supply chain disruptions and high material costs.

Sony had raised prices of its consoles in various European markets in April. Rival Xbox also hiked sticker prices of its consoles and accessories in the U.S., Europe, Australia and the UK a month later.

Consoles were expected to be a major driver of videogame market growth this year due to the launch of premium titles such as Take-Two Interactive's "Grand Theft Auto VI" and Nintendo's Switch 2.

But console price hikes and the delay of highly-anticipated "GTA VI" to next year have cast some doubt on the pace of growth in the industry.

On Wednesday, Sony said there are no price changes for other markets and prices of PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged.

Yeah because they were the beta testers

When prices across the board are increasing for absolutely everything, it's going to happen.

PS/Xbox are building in the same factories, sourcing from the same component manufacturers, and using the same international grid of shipping and retail outlets...it's going to happen. Blue box or green box, it's not a matter of corporate greed it's a matter of larger economic conditioning.

Only economically clueless sheep will repeat, "Greedy corporations".

No.

This is false, you aren't as wise to the industry as you think you are.

The tech used in making the Ps5, which is 2018/19 tech, is much cheaper than it was then. Even with "muh tariffs" this should negate it AT WORST. This is a large reason why console prices (and tech in general) drop in later years for pricing.

This is nothing but them attaching to a situation to use an excuse to extort the very impulsive and pathetic consumer base of the US into making them more money.

This won't be hard to prove, let's see what Sony executives make in the next few years and if it has increased.

Future spoiler: it will

Theres no conspiracy here. Those 2022 increases weren't because of tariffs but it was well documented why they happened.

Move on, love your job and work hard.
Be grateful for the console or PC in your hand right now and let us talk about games, pc or console war again.

Is America great again? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

You wait for a 100% tariff on foreign-made chips, for a better future for all.
The good thing is that I'm in Mexico, prices are not increasing, even the Nintendo Switch 2 dropped in price.

Mexico is even demanding that Playstation list prices in local currency and not in dollars.

And Trump and his handlers still have 40% of Americans convinced that Tarrifs are a tax that's levied on other countries. They have no idea that it's a tax on American companies and consumers. Importer pays the tax, not the shipper.

Eveyone screaming tariffs and orange man bad... do you really believe this prices would go down if tomorrow the tariffs were canceled ? ... yes tariffs ... but lets also sprinkle some of the old company greed in there too.

Xbox would have that mentality (as they slowly continue to fall in laster place)

In my opinion, Xbox consoles fell victim to the evolution of Microsoft's gaming strategy on the one hand, and to market uncertainty on the other.

But it's still a collection of many individual factors that in the case of Sony may have a slightly different impact on the price, it doesn't necessarily have to be related to Microsoft's greed or their bad will, jokes aside.

Well yes, that's why they want to eliminate Universities and Schools, so that people are more manipulable.

An example is Hulk Hogan or the cast of FRIENDS tv show who are ignorant people.

I remember a couple years ago when used cars were literally appreciating in value, and now half decade old consumer electronics are getting price increases.

Things are far worse than most normies will admit.

At this rate the mf's waiting to buy a console at a later date for a cheaper price and shit load of games, will do so with senior discounts.

Everything is becoming more and more expensive .. its been like this since the pandemic and the global shitness it caused and god knows when if ever will the economy recover from that shit show of bad decisions after bad decisions.

You dumb fucks. How in the living fuck is this aging tech more expensive now than when you release it 5 years ago? What a disgrace. No wonder the doomsayers are out there saying console gaming is dying...

This is an interesting take... trumps anything I could have come up with.

You have won Gaf.

Pro console, 750 bucks
disc drive, 90 dollars
stand (LOL)-30 bucks
880 dollars.
You just got BF6, now you need PS plus to play online....that's 80 bucks a year for the basic tier, you rock this PS5 pro to at least 5 years. Thats 1200 dollars. add in a broken controller, because you aint getting TMR sticks. That's another 80 bucks. 1300 dollars. If you get the premium tier, thats about 180 a year. Or 1700 dollars. That's solid 1440p PC money. ATP, anyone shilling how much cheaper console is, is dumb. Consoles only exist ATP for people who want "couch comfort" and dads. also, the shocking number of IT workers. Who just "wanna come home and press a button".
It's funny because 1700 dollars across 5 years is chump change. Ant that's not even accounting for hours of usage from said console, controller, etc.

It's what the television (exaggeration here - no one is watching television anymore) and what few media sources they can be bothered to read tell them. Forget all the other relevant data.

Honestly the way i see it is they put themselves into a spiral the moment they announced the xbox one.

Everything after that has been strictly damage control for whats now essentially a dying console (specifically console, not platform. I'd give them just another gen or two before they go full-sega)
