Playstation first party games have been Press X to Jason for the past 10 years anyway.

I started God of War 2018 on PS5 a few days ago and bursted out laughing when the "Press X to jump over chasms" came. In a fucking action game.

Mainstream gaming current year.

i really don't get how studios continue to make and develop these video game adaptations - which often in of themselves are rip offs of films. Be it Halo, Uncharted or Last of Us. I do not have faith these can be anything truly great.

One of my favourite shows of all time is Chernobyl. That was made out of basically nothing.

Their games have a lot of material to work with.

Only issue is they will likely be average and I have way too much outstanding stuff on watchlist with not enough time. So I think it will be waste of their resources.
Made out of nothing??!!?!!?
You mean made out of the story behind one of the biggest nuclear disasters this planet has ever witnessed, right?

Multimedia has been the way of things in AAA gaming for awhile. The graphic novels, the toy merchandising, the web series, etc. EA sort of set the pace on that one by turning all of their games (even "smaller" ones like Dead Space) into a multimedia franchise.

Sony holds a lot of movies, shows, and assets to make more. Since broadcast TV is on life support, it makes sense to move more into that territory.

The big mistake would be for Sony to attempt their own streaming app/brand (again) instead of shacking up with one of the big providers. I don't want five different Sony apps for music, movies, anime, streaming, etc that all run worse than the popular apps. This is likely the way they'll go, unfortunately.

Sony acting like their IPs carry the same weight as those of Disney and other corporate giants. Fuck it, why not. Burn that money Jimbo. Can't wait for Powers 2.0.

Wait, Sony ALREADY own a TV and movie production division.

What are you on about? Sony Pictures is a thing. Sony isn't going to randomly creating two competing divisions for no good reason.

Are you going to have Xbox Division to start writing PC Operation systems?

Sony can't make good movie even with Disney IPs without external help. Spiderman movies were so bad that Marvel had to start producing movies for them so they would stop damaging Spiderman brand. I'm seriously expecting Doom and Mortal Kombat level movies from them at best.

Not new news but hear it from Jimbo himself.

Imo SCE planned shows based on already storytelling heavy games, are a waste of money. Would prefer they invest in SCEJ or buy out some studios like Kojipro or pour more money to make psnow competitive

Sure the idea is simple to cross promote their franchises, pander to their fans and hope netflix/hbo nongamers may pick a ps5 or two.

That's simplistic and old school thoughts though. Gamers already gone through 6-8 hrs of cinematic cutscenes sequels, what more can be told through the shows. The premise of uncharted, tlou, aren't even that interesting to sit through a season or 2 of shows. 🤷‍♀️

I don't even know where to begin. Companies are desperate for content and established universes are easy things to derive shows and movies from. This has nothing to do with the games and will not impact what they are investing in with respect to games. Nothing works the way your post seems to imply. Do you complain about NASA getting funding with cancer still being a thing? If not, why would you complain about a company trying to make some money off of existing IP in a different space? The decision is do we take money from netflix and spread our franchise names or not? The Witcher show is a huge hit, why wouldn't they try to create another one? Why would this impact their decisions on developing games or acquisitions?

I think most of sony's IP is second rate but I'd rather watch them than play them so why not

FMV Games >>>>> sony's cinematic experiences

I don't know what to think yet, let's wait and see the outcome before we judge, they're deep in the movie industry after all, they have the resources and the know-how, so it can turn out pretty well. But on the other hand their games are already as cinematic as it gets, so why bother? For me personally games are so much better than movies because not only they can represent stuff that's not possible to perform/create in real life but also they are fully interactive, rather than just passively watching what's going on the screen, so from a gaming perspective, it would be better if they just made more games instead. But I get it, it's a different industry, different audience, different revenue opportunity not available otherwise.

Have you seen the show?

How interesting can operation level mistake be? I have seen them made and they are pretty boring actually.

Show focuses on that and I found it to be gripping.

It doesn't create drama by being biggest nuclear disaster ever seen but focuses on technicians and engineers involved, their motivation, cleanup afterwards etc.

Remember when a console company started talking about doing things like this back in 2013, and everyone took the piss?
Remember when that same console company didn't focus on games with the initial reveal?

Sony also introduced, PSVue a cable TV service. No one took that piss then for that either because it wasn't a main focus over games.

Execution, messaging. For the XBO, TV TV TV TV could have waited until after the games reveal.

As for do I care that Sony is doing this? I don't, indifferent as long as games aren't taking a back seat.

Sony does have experience in this field tho, TV shows and movies.

i don't want to watch any films based on naughty dog. it's bad enough the games exist.

and they better not make a God of War movie!

the only film i'd watch is Horizon one.

Nay.

As a long time Playstation fan I generally do not approve of Ryan's vision and the turns they've taken in recent decade. Some people will find enjoyment in it, but I won't persue it. I've already decided to break-off from following games after the 8th gen anyway. Looking back, there's been very few Sony published PS4 games that legitimately sparked my excitement.

The overall direction this industry has taken really doesn't appeal to me anymore or puts me off at worst.

Wouldn't mind it, seems like they have potential but let's see how the TLOU show and Uncharted movie pan out first.

My thoughts at first as well. However, the situation is not quite the same.

Sony doesn't put too much focus on this in the same way Microsoft did, where TV was mentioned at least one time every ten minutes.
Yes. The equivalent would be PS5 being announced and Sony talking only about TV but in reality Sony only showed off games and nothing but games at the reveal.

Can't believe the 7 people who voted yay.

You can't even setup a sceu with all the shows/movies in planning. This is still a silly project to take.

Like leaving scej to die a slow death without funds? I rather they put out some quirky japanese games that may bomb than needing to follow tv series. Not sure if people these days mind sitting even longer binge watching tv..

Man, I don't want to be rude, but you are an Xbox fanboy and troll, since when does this concern you so much? Why peddle narratives like Japan Studio being starved of funds?

As for me, it depends on the property, the script and so on. If it's going to focus on the sexual struggles of people in Ellie's camp (oh sorry, Elliot) and how difficult it is to be male to female trans in an apocalyptic world without transition medicine (but only for that day, their sexual fluidity will make them switch their gender to something else tomorrow), then...nay, they can keep it.

If it's about Kratos in the northern realm and more classic storytelling focusing on interesting characters and stories, then sure, why not? Could be interesting.

If you haven't noticed there are a lot of trolls spreading FUD about Japan. Let them live in their fantasy.

You laugh, but Uwe is far from the worst video game movie maker around. Look at the big budget attempts with Doom, assassin's creed, rampage, battleships, warcraft. Boll's efforts are better than them.
I actually enjoyed all of those movies except for warcraft since I didn't see it. Doom would have to be my favorite(not the second one that is my least favorite of this bunch). Bloodrayne would have to still be the weakest out of this bunch. Honestly would have been better as a tv series from how the movies looked.

I'm not against it but I am not for it either. I just dont see a lot of IP in the games media successfully moving to a different medium without drastically changing what it is. Maybe thats the goal but we wont know till we see the content. I am watching the progress of Uncharted with very curious eyes.

This means less focus on games and less money to fund them so it's definitely a no from me. Spend the extra money on creating / buying new studios.

That's the idea, or at least the common idea of old.

These days, it's about providing the best direct experience of that service.

Branching off just don't seems a smart thing imo. Sony throwing money into a wrong pit

Like would you spend hours chasing a tlou season? Generic settings can work fine in interactive games, but what content advantage does a tlou tv have?

It could have a more fleshed out story for one. And who says I can't enjoy both at the sametime?

I mean if they are actually high quality, the subject matter doesnt matter. Plenty of successful shows out there where nothing really happens, but the actors make it work.

I watched some Halo movie and that was total :lollipop_poop:

Pretty sure PlayStation Movies and TV series will be better.

you do realize this will most likely be handled by Sony's movie/media division, not playstation..highly doubt they would do this to the detriment of their games, which is really what makes them their money

That is supposed to make it better? You didn't saw leaked emails how incompetent higher ups there were?

I bought a bunch of movies on the PS store during the last two generations, and I'd like a way to watch them without turning my PS on. Especially because I unplugged my PS4 - it wasn't worth having a jet engine on in the living room just to watch movie.

If their movies and tv shows based on their IPs are successful and bring more money into their pokets then i guess that will be good for Playstation as well. A more financially stronger Sony means that they will have even more money to invest for more games, more new IPs and acquisitions.

As for the movies themselves i personally don't care. I don't see the appeal of an Uncharted movie but then again i haven't watched a single new movie in years. I prefer to spend my free time on games, books and lately on old classic movies.

But i wish them good luck since if they are successful it will benefit their gaming division as well.
