Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

Seems like Thimbleweed Park is going to be a real throwback.

Sounds good to me. Just like the way people celebrate hardcore RPG's like Bloodborne and Pillars of Eternity, we should have tricky adventure games also. Not all adventure games have to cater to the laziest and most impatient gamers. ;)

I can be furious at some puzzles sometimes, but I always rather have that, then games like Dreamfall: Chapters, where you more or less can't get stuck. Where every challenge is so easy you wonder why the game doesn't just play itself.

I think Daedalic is only a publisher/distributor. IIRC the game was kickstarted about one year ago by non-Daedalic devs.

Oh, you're right. I skimmed by originally and saw their name and thought it was under developer. I didn't know that they publish now, that's cool.

A couple of PnCs coming out.

Exciting for Charnel House Trilogy to drop this month. Got my big boy excited pants on. The short game they did years back really made my skin crawl so to see it being expanded upon is so amazing.

There is a steam Daedalic Armageddon Bundle for 15.99 at 90% off of 159$ that has a shit ton of awesome adventure games. Dirt cheap and well worth it.

Speaking of Daedalic, I'm in the middle of The Night of the Rabbit. Enjoying the game quite a bit - just the right amount of charm to go along with pretty visuals and good puzzles.

I think I'm something of a Daedalic fanboy - haven't really disliked anything these guys have made.

Just saw on Steam that The Charnel House Trilogy comes out tomorrow.

I just got Night of the Rabbit earlier today through a bundle so that is good to hear. I always had a bad impression of Daedalic based on a lot of posts here. That being said, in the past couple of days I played through Dead Synchronicity(I know they didn't develop it but still), Deponia 1 and 2, and I am going to start Deponia 3 soon. I don't get the hate.

God damn I can't believe it's that cheap. So much goodness there. I need to relive the Deponia games, I kinda miss them.

I'm hoping Technobabylon becomes the next Blade Runneresque game. Not because Wadjet Eye published Gemini Rue i just love the setting and atomosphere that sub-genre oozes.

Just finished Cognition: An Erica Reed thriller, not bad, I enjoyed the first two episodes the most as I feel the game works better when you're doing actual detective work (gathering clues, interrogating suspects and unlocking new locations) rather than the more linear second part which focuses on the overarching plot, which is held back by a fairly weak cast of characters. In terms of presentation it's ok: 2d backgrounds are decent but 3d characters are stiff, voice acting is a mixed bag.
Overall it's a pretty solid game, well worth a playthrough.

Honestly, well-written adventure games are so hard to come by that I'm still interested. Plus, Steam has a combo pack which includes the developer's last game, Richard and Alice. I just started. Seems interesting.

Cool, let us know how it is and I may have to check it out :)

Charnel House Trilogy looks interesting, but not sure about the supposed 90 minute length:

Hmm.

I played Sepulchre, the middle part, earlier today. It's okay as a narrative experience; I'll probably buy this for the other parts as I like creepy point-and-clicks but it's not that great, here's hoping the other bits are better.

It's also suffering from the The Curse of Ben304. Ben Chandler is a very good artist, but it's like he does the art for every AGS adventure of note going now, and he draws a very distinctive walk cycle that looks rather unnatural :)

Speaking of well written games, GOG have a sale on the whole Broken Sword series at the moment which finally led me to pick up 5. While it's a bit low on puzzles and rather linear thus far (only about 30% through apparently), the dialogue and presentation have the sparkle of the earlier games which is more than I was expecting.

Sorry to double post, but...

Charnel House Trilogy is VERY short.

Third part's the best. FIrst part has a dodgy voice actress attempting an American accent which takes the shine off things; second is too predictable. Third is a little longer than the second and a little creepier. The whole thing, however... should have probably been a Quartet.

Worth £3, perhaps. The dialogue reads more effectively than the way it's spoken.

It's funny, because I had the same exact reaction, except that I've never even played a Daedelic game. I guess impressions of their products have been so mixed as to make me immediately wary of everything they touch.

That said, I think I do have the Edna & Harvey games sitting around from a GOG sale, and I really should dive in and give them a chance.

Yeah, I might just need to check out some of their other stuff. I've never played any of the Edna & Harvey games and they've always sort of caught so maybe I'll check one out. Their games look really nice, but, based on the ones I've played, feel lacking in every other area.

Night of the Rabbit is a good game! And this comes from someone who previously would never touch Daedalic games with a bargepole, after Whispered World and A New Beginning. It has a proper localisation and good puzzles. I would even - gasp - recommend it.

(I'm also okay with Dark Eye Chains of Satinav, and Deponia doesn't seem anywhere near as annoying as people make it out to be...thus far...)

So I'm slightly coming round to Daedalic, basically.

Damn I loved The Charnel House Trilogy. I was always a big fan of Sepulchre for the atmosphere and the creepiness but the 3rd chapter really added that extra addition to it with explanations and the new girl's story. Seems in 2016 they will continue the story so I'm looking forward to that as well. But hell I know you can finish the game in under 2 hours but for like $5 or less, nothing really to complain about. I've had more fun with this short game than a bunch of other games I spent like full price for.

This seems like an appropriate place for a post!

I don't think there's a thread on Adventure Jam (but there should be!) it's a two week long jam for creating adventure games.

http://jams.gamejolt.io/adventurejam

Me and a few friends have made a submission, if anybody cares to take a look I'd really appreciate any feedback. I think we got through an awful lot of work in two weeks, and I'm *really* happy with how the game panned out.

Our entry is called 'Once Upon A Timeline' and it's a game that takes place in just one location, but one location over 150 years (you have a time machine). The USP is that you can go to any year within a span of 150, and watch the scene change around you in real time.

We've only tested it on one Mac config, but the game is unplayable as the highlight shader didn't work; forcing all the important items not to be drawn. Sorry Mac users!

Wow...the ending in tormentum kinda felt odd-
I did only 2 'bad' choices and the rest were all 'good choices. The game even shows that, and yet it declares I was more evil than good?
Granted I
took the 'guilty' key, but even then it should've been less black and white about it....

Then again maybe it was the actions themselves? Tht's what some GAFfers been telling me.

Wadjet Eye posted on their facebook that pre-orders for Technobabylon go up next week. So it looks like it should be releasing in the first or second week of May. Stoked!

Broken Age is being released on tuesday! :)

First review of the complete game is Game Informers, with a score of 9.25/10. They gave Act 1 a score of 8/10.

It's weird to think the game is going to finished now. I'm so use to reading updates and watching the episodes. But I'm so excited to play it from beginning to end.

So today i have watched my wife play one of her casual games, it looked somewhat like one of those hidden object games, and then it dawned on me that in some of those games what you do is nothing else as you do in ACTUAL P&C adventure games, only here it is extremely simplified and casualised.

So long story short, it actually looked like FUN to me and i guess that is because i have less and less time to sit down and enjoy a brain-melting, hard as balls TRUE P&C game like i did back in the day.

Can anyone here recommend me a good game in this genre that is actually pretty easy on purpose or somewhat short? (I already have the Blackwell games) or even a more casual game that still has good atmosphere as that is what i cherish most in my adventure games.

Tormentum is closer to a hidden object game than a true P&C, but it's short and easy and has great atmosphere.

grey matter is pretty easy with the exception of the last place you visit (that actually has puzzles i guess). i like moebius as well which is also easy but i am pretty sure i am in the minority there.

the wolf among us is pretty great and telltale games have 0 puzzles.

Got Perils of Man from GMG, now I wait for my code to arrive :V
Will get Fire during the summer sale...or in a bundle :V

This is kind of cool.

Wander, First Ever Mainframe Text Adventure Game, Recovered (IGN)

A game called Wander, one of the earliest if not the first text adventure ever, has been recovered.

Wander was a mainframe interactive fiction by Peter Langston. Created in 1974, it pre-dates more well-known classics like Adventure (Colossal Cave).

It wasn't just a game, but a toolkit similar to modern text adventure systems like Inform 7. The original description refers to itself as "a tool for writing non-deterministic fantasy stories."
