Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

I've already said I liked the jokes, as probably did most players since the game was very well received, so I don't think there's much left I can add.
I remain open to the possibility of other people not liking the humour of course.
Having said that, implying that those who liked the game have not played the "right" adventure games is, in my experience, unfair, on the contrary many who expressed appreciation for Tbout did so because they had played many 90's classics and felt that the game managed to recapture much of that spirit.
I agree. Really liked TBoUT and thought it was one of the funniest recent adventure games. Maybe something got lost in translation but from what I played in english, it was a nicely done. So you either like the humour or not and afaik there's a demo available if someone is on the fence.

Speaking of TBOUT, i was gonna give it a go soon but... just how long is the game exactly? Don't really have time for a huge adventure right now hmmm...

Yeah, no, we just have to disagree there, Tbout style is not that dissimilar from other acclaimed wacky adventure games from the 90s (like, again, S&M and Simon the Sorcerer), I also disagree about Blackwell, it has really good puzzles and some decent side stories, but also features one of the dullest protagonists ever.

Honestly, having played the first tbout and having not liked it at all, I think that it got pretty bland puzzles, forced story, bad pacing and terrible, terrible humor and writing.
I'm sorry, but it ain't the same fuckin' ballpark, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same fuckin' sport of S&M or Simon.

It is dull. I can only imagine that everyone's judgement is clouded by the lack of legitimately good modern adventure games.

If you're interested in good writing, I really like the Blackwell series and the Ben and Dan games.
Agree. It got its praises just because we are starving for good advenure games.
Also agree on Blackwell. It's really well written and well designed, it's a fantastic series.

Just tried the demo of TBOUT, and thought it was pretty terrible. Stiff animations, generic sceneries where I had to really look for the few details that were animated, voice actors that felt like from a fan game, humour that just tried too much, etc. It's not the full game of course, but I saw nothing that made me want to play 20h of this.

Not for me. It felt like several steps backwards after playing Broken Age.

Also agree on Blackwell. It's really well written and well designed, it's a fantastic series.

I think the Blackwell games are the next for me. Already have Resonance in my GOG account, but heard a lot of praise for the Blackwell series lately, so those games are more tempting now.

To each his own I guess, personally I don't even think S&M's humour is that good.

Oh come on, you don't know that, I could say the same thing about any well received modern adventure game

Alum just went up on Steam for $15. Roughly 7-10 hours of gameplay apparently. Just bought it and downloading now. They put a lot of work into this game it looks like, plus they didn't go with a publisher so I hope it gets the publicity it needs.

I was going to come here and post about it. I didn't back it but I'm liking everything I see. Will definitely check it out at some point.

I've never played a Hidden Object game that I can remember but wondering if there is a one out there that you guys would recommend?

The later Mystery Case Files games are probably the best, and are certainly what most of the current identikit games in the genre take their inspiration from.

I'd personally recommend going for something without the hidden object scenes, though; try the Drawn series, which are basically very streamlined adventure games but with excellent production values.

aNYONE Got their Technobabylon key from WE's website?
I won't be home for another 10ish hours but won't play it until I finish LiS Ep. 3 :P

So adventure GAF, not neccesarily 2015 games, but do you have any suggestions for a good adventure available on Android (OS)?

I recently had a blast with Broken Sword: DC on my phone (Xperia Z3). I usually like mysteries the most, but also enjoyed Monkey Island and Telltale's Sam and Max very much recently. As for the gameplay, I like most approaches I think. Examples are modern Telltale (TWAU, WD), Cing games (Another Code), Layton titles, Monkey Island's etc. As long as it fits the narrative of the game and the puzzles are not pure luck/illogical randomness.

And is that latest Humble Bundle of Artifex Mundi worth it? I am not familiar with hidden object stuff to be honest.

Edit: P.S. not necessarily searching for absolute GOTY material here. That would be great, but having something entertaining to do when my transport gets delayed for a few hours is good enough.

Technobabylon reviews:

IndieGames.com
Wadjet Eye has an outstanding reputation among adventure game fans, and Technobabylon is another feather in their cap. I'm sure anybody who likes the genre will without a doubt adore this game. More than just that, however, any fans of narrative-driven games should look into Technobabylon as soon as possible. Its story and presentation are phenomenal, and I think it is without question one of the best games of this year.

PC Gamer - 80/100
An old school point-and-click adventure with a captivating story, strong characters, and a rich, well-realised sci-fi setting.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun
But it is a beautiful-looking and well-written game, in a way that adventures far too rarely see. It’s a game that proves to me that I’m right to demand so much more from point-n-clickers that get eulogised despite their enormous flaws. It has restored my faith that the genre deserves high expectations, even if it occasionally fails to meet them. And it’s a long, detailed chunk of hefty sci-fi, with some careful character work.

Should I go all in for that bundle?

If you don't have any games from the upper tiers, I'd say yes.

Night of the Rabbit is a great game - one of Daedalic's best. Magic spells add a fun dimension to solving puzzles, and the music/artwork is beautiful.

Broken Sword 5 is perhaps the 2nd best BS game and a nice throwback. Easy at first but some good puzzles in the second half of the game.

The Raven is good and worth playing. The first half of the game is stronger in terms of puzzles and story, but it's an enjoyable and charming game.

Haven't played Blackwell Epiphany, but I adore the first four Blackwell games and Epiphany had rave reviews as the best in the series.

Don't know much about Always Sometimes Monsters.

Oh good, John Walker's pretty ruthless when it comes to modern adventure games so this may be a winner!

He's been shitting on several good games and praised things like The Book of Unwritten Tales, so I really don't trust him at all when it comes this genre, whether he thinks things are good or bad. I hope the game is good, but gonna wait for more reviews from other sources.

So I have 2 copies of Technobabylon in my Steam account (bought it yesterday and then got it as a gift today lol).

So how can I get rid of one of the copies? Whoever tells me how gets the extra game.

If the gift is in your inventory, you can click on "send gift" then either enter the recipient's email address or choose someone on your friend's list. Then just click next, type a message if desired, and confirm the delivery.

If you don't have that person's email and don't have them in your friends list, you can email the gift to yourself then copy/paste the URL in the gift email and share that with the desired recipient. That person can then visit that URL and add the game to their account.

Responded to your PM, but just wanted to say BIG THANKS here as well! I was really lucky to open the thread just a couple minutes after you posted.

I most likely won't get a chance to play Technobabylon until next week due to traveling, but when I finish it I'll post my thoughts here.

Thank you very much once more! :)

Hope you enjoy the game. Seems like one of the better recent PnC releases from what I've played of it. But I'm still very early in the game so let's see how the rest of it holds up.

Is there any word on The Longest Journey getting an Android release? I know they got it out for iOS last year, and I was hoping Android would follow suit.
I have it on DVD Rom, but I'd love to double-dip and play it on mobile.

You guys probably know already but Pendulo Studios is back from the dead paired up with Microids working on Yesterday Origins. I absolutely love Pendulo's Runaway series and was a series I had lots of good memories with but Yesterday.. I had wished they were going to do something new not tied to a past entry. Of Course I'll still pick it up but not so excited that their new project is attached to Yesterday.

So I played about an hour of Technobabylon and am enjoying it but...
My screen res is 1080p, how do I set yup the game so that it'll run proper fullscreen? I don't dislike the graphics engine they use, in fact it's among my fav. Pixel art based stuff, but I hate having to play their games either in windowed or in 4:3 with black bars on the side. For the latter, long as Steam messages show up in the black bar area, I wouldn't mind.

Also for the life of me I can't see to appreciate the AA options they offer, they leave much to be desired too.

Onto the game though, ish starts goes south 15-30 mins. into the game
that poor janitor =( Also I killed one of the embryos =_= My last save was from when the janitor dies

Finished Technobabylon last night. Good world-building and some entertaining moments; it perhaps suffered a little from its very "tight" design, as being chunked into chapters based around a small pool of locations makes the game very easy in many ways, particularly as the puzzles are so logical.

I presume the ending I got was (END GAME SPOILERS)
because I gave control back to Central, rather than transferring it to Nina - although maybe if I'd falsely accused Han of the bomb attempt rather than the Congressman that would have made a difference
. I don't know if there were any other particularly significant decisions I could have made -
although saving the Biobomber did seem to change a few dialogue options, the only thing that seemed significant was that Lao believed Regis didn't kill Baxter. I'd guess that obeying Nina straight away at the beginning only delays the destruction of all the embryos.

The other puzzle thing I was wondering about was
the amount of death I caused! The only time it might have been avoidable, I suppose, is towards the end - if you send the security drone plus grenade up through the top conduits by manipulating the platform do you blow up the power supply and end the final confrontation with the Mindjacker differently? I sent it down and it blew him up.

I suppose I could find all this out by replaying the game and making different choices, but I don't think I really liked it enough to do that.

You want it in stretched widescreen so the graphic aspect ratio is wrong?

If you go into the game's setup options and click the "advanced" button you can add/remove horizontal and vertical black bars. The game is never going to be able to scale to widescreen because all the art is created by hand and non-scalable. I don't know if you've already done that, though.

I haven't been that impressed with Pendulo, thought Runaway was pretty bad, but more options in the genre for us is always a good thing.

Pulled the trigger on the whole set. Does Broken Sword 5 serve as an entry point for series newcomers?

It's pretty self contained, so you can start with it, but I would recommend to play Broken Sword 1 first to get to know the characters. That game still holds up very well. Then you can pretty much just skip to the fifth without problem.

Yesterday? Seriously? Yesterday was dreadful (although partly down to localisation).

Maybe having Microids involved will improve it.

There are some recurring characters in BS5 that were first introduced in BS1 (and then kept appearing in later games). There are also few goat jokes that you will miss without playing BS1. BS5 is still self-contained and you can play it without playing previous entries just fine; you will simply miss few jokes and/or easter eggs here and there.
