Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

Oknytt is 90% off on Steam. Get it, people. Very enjoyable pnc based on Swedish folklore.

This is actually pretty good.
Thanks.
Goddammit, I wish I was able to play the old Sierra games, they look so damn magical and unique, but I've grown lazy and can't force myself to use that interface and the very punishing mechanics they had.

Glad you enjoyed it. I agree, as much as I love those old Sierra games it's a little hard to go back to them. Those games came at a time when you could immerse yourself for hours, trying every possible action to see all the responses the game had to offer. Nowadays I just try to play games as quickly as possible, and that's not the best mindset for enjoying the classics (which were more about exploration and experimentation, partly due to technical limitation).

I got yet another cyberpunk pnc, this one's called Sinless and it definitely looks striking as hell. I'm still playing Void and Meddler, Technobabylon and Read Only Memories too. And I still haven't even finished Snatcher, what is wrong with me.

Guys my favorite adventure game and possibly favorite game period is Sam & Max: Hit The Road. Can you all recommend me some newer games that I might enjoy based on this?

Ben there Dan That + Time Gentlemen Please
Monster Island 1 + 2 Special Edition

Honestly there isn't much that has the same charm.

I am at work for the next 4ish hours but wrote a draft on pnc games and their resurgence this year
Will post it when i get back home and would appreciate ur input on it before i post it

I could tell that the Hector series was trying to have a similar vibe, but much darker and more offensive. Obviously it's not as great, but it's British and bawdy if you like that stuff.

MucasFlem Games, lol

Why do I get the feeling that this is the game I was expecting when Tim Schaffer announced his KS? I'm so happy that Ron is going all out in the old style.

Must...not...watch

Ben there Dan That / Time Gentlemen Please is the only thing I can think of that has remotely the same vibe

I found it too simplistic personally. No verbs, two commands, no on-mouse-hover descriptions. Worst of both worlds gui wise.

The writing is good (Schafer's writing is always good), but as someone who heavily appreciates the puzzle side of P&C games I was pretty disappointed.

My favourite of 2015 is probably Technobabylon or Dropsy

No on-mouse hoover descriptions was something I also missed, but the verbs is something I don't care for that much any longer. It's been too many years since pretty much all adventure games got rid of them.

And I thought they compensated well with the things missing in descriptions, with all the extra dialogue you could find.

As for the puzzles, you find just as many that think that they were to simple as you find people that thought they were to complex.

It's not a flawless game, but I do think it's an essential title to at least try if you have a soft spot for the old LucasArts adventures. At this price, it should be a no brainer for fans.

Edit: Posted a giveaway for Broken Age, in the Holiday Sale thread.

I want to get it DRM-free but $7.49's not the price I'm looking for atm XP

Some games replaced the verbs with other systems though. I remember resonance had a cool system where you drag items into memory.

I don't have a general dislike for the removal of verbs, but if it's done, it needs to be replaced by something that doesn't narrow you down into such a restrictive path - BA seems to take its cue from the last and simplest P&C games lucasarts put out before they folded. If they didn't want to use verbs I'd have preferred something different entirely, games using look/use only has kinda become a bugbear for me.

This is true. I was shocked at how people took a long time to get through BS5, which only had three tough puzzles in the entire game (and two of those were tough because they were nonsensical as opposed to being clever).

Any inpressions on Read Only Memories from Point/Click Gaf?

I bought it, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. :/
A couple of impressions in the OT though:

I've received some goodies from the Nelly Cootalot Kickstarter:

IMG_4550_zpsmasdxqnj.jpg

...I hope the game isn't very far behind!

I'm pretty excited about that game if only because some of those Kickstarter updates remind me of something written by Tim Schafer or some another Lucasarts alum. The guy's funny.

They're actually the thing I miss the most from old adventure games. No verbs is too shallow and simplicistic.
SCUMM is the best adventure game interface ever created, bar none.
I'm so damn happy Ron Gilbert is using them in Thimbleweed Park.

Back then we basically lived inside the game. Totally different approach.

its good, and draws obvious comparisons to snatcher/bladerunner/cyber punk sci fi. Its closer to a visual novel than other adventures, but still has some interactivity peppered here and there (like phoenix wright). Its a decent solid length of 8-ish hours.

I wish I had something else to say, but I just noticed that avatar.
<3 Junior.

Thinking of picking up complete Deponia on the sale, I have the first one already but still seems like a nice package.

nice price. Funny enough 2 +3 right now would be the same price as the complete journey. All 3 deponias are very good.
Also totally a must buy from this sale if you like daedalic: anna's quest for $10.

Not a point and click game by any means, but a really good VN in style of Snatcher.
Strong pro-LGBT bias (might be a problem for some people), great music, solid writing and decent plot.

Huh, don't know why I got that impression from the short trailer. Oh well, good to hear if it's solid in any case.

Not sure if the game qualifies, but am playing Aviary Attorney currently, and it's fantastic so far.

It's among my GotY list.
It is mentioned in the thread I am making, I'll post the draft soon, I've been ill for the past day and haven't been feeling too well :X

Alright here's the draft I wrote for a thread I want to make
It's a thread about how this year was an interesting year for PnC and Adventure style games. Feel free to contribute or provide impressions...because as you'll see I left a few entries blank mainly as I either did not play that game yet or don't own it ^^;
I really would appreciate this becoming a group effort too if possible :3

2015 has been an interesting year for the genre; I can count maybe a dozen well done games released within this year alone, in fact if I had my way, my GotY list would mostly contain PnC/Adventure-style games.
This even shows when Sony showcase PnC games during their events such as PSX, and with various PnC-style games being available on consoles.
With the Steam Winter Seal going on, now is as good time as any to get back into one of the main cornerstones of PC gaming.
Listed below are some titles that are representative of not only PnC-style games making a comeback but why the genre is so appreciated and offer great hours of entertainment.

Technobabylon
header.jpg

Technobabylon is a PnC game in the vein of Monkey Island, only it’s set in a cyberpunk dystopian future ala Blade Runner. Published by Wadjet Eye it features their trademark pixel art and animations, with great voice acting, impressive pixel art design and a simple and straightforward gameplay.
It may not bring anything new to the genre but it goes to show that even the traditional style can still be entertaining when adapt any setting to offer the player a riveting experience.

Life is Strange
header.jpg

Notice how I’ve written PnC and Adventure-style in my previous sentences; Life is Strange is one game I would describe as such.
If it were made back in the 90s era it would’ve had its watercolor theme and work well as a PnC game.
Life is Strange was a major hit with console and PC owners alike thanks to its basic and simple gameplay (consisting of light puzzle elements), but more for its immersive characters, story and setting. As well as it’s hella hip dialog, shaka brah!
It is those elements that relate it to PnC games IMHO, even if it doesn’t have cat-hair ripping puzzles.

Grim Fandango
header.jpg

One of the most well revered PnC games during the last years of their popularity, GF has been a game that hasn’t been available on digital mediums such as Steam or GOG until it was announced for release way back in 2014 to not only PCs but Sony systems as well.
The fact that such a classic would get revealed during a console focused event was mindblowing and raised hope of more LucasArts classics being available again. Which came true with Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle getting re-release slated for 2016.

Broken Age
header.jpg

I wasn’t a backer of this game, and it seems to have gotten WAY too much flack, but after beating it earlier this year, I found myself liking it a lot. While I do admit getting stumped at the knot puzzle, I gotta confess; if a puzzle is getting in the way of my enjoyment of a PnC game, I’ll just look up its solution.
This doesn’t mean I do this for ALL games or throughout any PnC game’s playthrough, but at the end of the day why do we play Video games? Because they’re fun and they entertain us, and in the case of PnC games why let frustration get in the way.
…and I don’t know about some of you but I was pleasantly entertained by Broken Age all things considered and said and done. I liked its art style (limited however it may be), I liked the humor, characters and dialog.
It may not do anything new for the genre as well, but it’s still a PnC game I’d go back to after months to re-experience it.

King’s Quest 2015
header.jpg

This was the last thing one would expect Activision to greenlight, featuring a host of noteworthy actors voicing a variety of characters, King’s Quest makes a comeback in 2015 with a strong start.
The puzzles aren’t that complex, but it manages to stand out by its colorful graphics, simple humor and wacky characters (“WHISPER CAN DO IT!”).
Although only 2 episodes released so far, the future looks promising for the entire package to offer a great experience set in a colorful fantasy setting.

Armikrog
header.jpg

Armikrog is the latest game from Doug TenNapel who worked on The Nevrhood and Earthworm Jim.
Sadly Armikrog released with a variety of issues and bugs that are still being ironed out, I confess that even I got hit by one; a bug caused my characters to be frozen in a screen and the one save data I have is from an a hour before that section! But that is for another thread.
If one were to look at Armikrog without any of its bugs, they’ll find a beautifully handcrafted world and setting with some nice puzzles.

Other than that I gotta say that the game’s intro is pretty slick.

Aviary Attorney
header.jpg

Let me start off by saying that Aviary Attorney is a rather short game; but it is still satisfying and entertaining to play through.
Aviary Attorney is a successfully funded Kickstarter, with the premise being an Ace Attorney-like game set in 1848 France; years after the July Revolution. Only the characters are animals drawn in the style of J. J. Grandville.
One of the positive elements of the game is that the writing and dialog is well done, containing various jokes and shoutouts (step-ladder!), while at the same time having a riveting story that’ll keep the player wondering what’ll happen next.
There is also an overarching story that begins with the first chapter and continues onto the final chapter of the game.
Being a newly released game it may be disadvantaged by being out by the Winter Steam Seal, but do consider giving it a chance and it may end up be well worth the price of admission especially when there are multiple endings and having some of the best characterizations a video game can have.
Do it for Bird-Jesus!

Contradiction
header.jpg

FMV games make a fantastic comeback this year with 2 surprise hits. The first of these is Contradiction, an FMV game where you play Detective Inspector Jenks who is investigating a murder at a rural British town.
Contradiction managed to win people over primarily thanks to actor as Jenks and his many facial reactions that them not achieving worldwide meme status is a damn mystery.
The overall gameplay is simple and straightforward but the performance of the characters, story and Jenks make this game an entertaining experience that cannot be missed.

Her Story
header.jpg

Tales from the Borderlands
Considered among the top 3 Telltale games have released in the past 5 years, since they started their current traditional style of Adventure games, TfB has won over a lot positive reception since its conclusion. It can even be enjoyed whether you’ve played a BLands game or not (the latter applies to me).
While the story does have a few plot holes, the overall journey, humor and characters are among the best that Telltale has produced.

The Silent Age

Read Only Memories

Goosebumps the game

Dropsy

This isn’t to say that prior years haven’t had their share of great games, but this year makes it worth reflecting on how PnCs have become now. Some of the notable releases or series of the past year include
Blackwell Series
Presented as a 2D pixel art PnC game, the Blackwell series follows Rosa Blackwell and Joey Mallone as they help ghosts transition to the afterlife. Despite the premise sounding simple, the overall journey, story and characters are great and make replaying the games still as entertaining the first time.
Book of Unwritten Tales
Tesla Effect: Tex Murphy
Frogware’s Sherlock Holmes series
Broken Sword 5
The Wolf Among us

In addition, while Visual Novels aren’t exactly seen as PnC Adventure games, they can be seen as a form of sister series to it.
For the past 2 years or so, a variety of Japanese Visual novels released on PC and on Sony systems, to name a few-
Clannad
Narcissu
Steins;Gate
Higurashi: When they cry
Amneisa: Memories

It’s so refreshing seeing such Japanese VNs making their mark outside of Japan when for years they would be difficult to find digitally, or didn’t have official translations at all.
The future is looking bright too, with some notable upcoming releases such as
Thimbleweed Park by Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame, and Gary Winnick
Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Full Throttle Remastered

The Pillars of the Earth, slated for 2017 release. Yes THAT Pillars of the Earth
Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders
Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

In conclusion if you have any interest at all in PnC-style Adventure games or would like to get into the genre, now is as a good time as any. Whether it be via Steam, PS4, PSVita or TouchPads or TouchPhones, PnC games be enjoyed by people of all ages and entertain everyone for years to come.

Nice write up. I was interested in Amikrog and I love the art, but every review I've read said even bugs aside, the game sucks and is a pretty trash-tier adventure game that's ploddingly boring, small world, and bad puzzles and that the only thing redeeming about the entire game are the visuals.

Care to elaborate on what you liked about it besides the visuals? Neverhood is one of my favorite adventure games.

As usual there is a lot to play, but I am a bit bothered that puzzles even this year seem to be frowned upon, by devs, gamers and journalists.

I enjoyed Tales from the Borderlands for the ride that it is, but I got much more satisfaction from the puzzles in Broken Age: Act 2. I want to be challenged, but I seem to be in a minority, based on the reception of many of the games mentioned.

I'm very much looking forward to Thimbleweed Park, and I hope that it will be a game that inspires others going forward.

i may have missed whats good about it. But i tried armikrog with high expectations, and i was utterly bored and un-moved by the puzzles. (and yes it is plagued with bugs) I havnt had a chance to play the neverhood so i dont know how it compares. But i could not bring myself to play armikrog more than a couple hours.

games from this year with great puzzling include: anna's quest, fran bow, technobabylon, dead synchronicity, life is strange (which is telltale-like and yet sooooo much better with interaction and puzzles than current telltale games).
But i think youre right it goes unsung that broken age act 2 really stepped up its puzzle-game and greatly improved the game.
However in terms of adventure games being made, i really think telltale is in the minority of devs trying to squash puzzles and interaction. Theyr just a very high budget minority :P
And i say this as someone who has supported telltale, enjoyed their seasons, and watched as game after game becomes more and more like watching a show.. and honestly they just arent the best shows.

As I wrote there are some games I hadn't written about since I hadn't played them yet, so feel free to contribute :3 I'll put it up by Tuesday or Monday since Weekends tends to have less traffic on GAF XP

From what I PLAYED of Armikrog, the puzzles weren't too complex and I rather enjoyed solving them. The claymation and areas are pretty colorful too which I liked.

I think that's the first time I read that Life is Strange has good puzzles. I have yet to play it myself though, need to try the demo on Steam. Heard some good things about Fran Bow, but I really don't care for the graphical style of that game myself.

Can I just add that Full Throttle re-master isn't slated for re-release till (apparently) 2017!!?!!
I mean WTF, that is ages away! Surely it can't take them over a year to re-master a game that isn't exactly awash with HUGE amount of content as the whole game can be completed in just over 2 hours...

As I understand it, they will have the same team doing that, as they have for DOTT: Special Edition. Which means that work hasn't begun it yet, and won't begin until March as earliest.

i should clarify as probably a lot of people wouldnt consider life is strange to be puzzle heavy in traditional terms... but compared to tales of the borderlands or GoT you do a ton more walking around and interactive thinking (primarily in the form of rewinding time multiple times to find solutions to problems). Its much closer in gameplay style to say.. heavy rain, than it is a telltale game.

that does drive me crazy, but youve gotta figure part of it is these remasters get launched on all the consoles.. greatly increases the resources and time needed on top of all the other things theyr working on.

So... what have you point-and-clickers got so far from the sale that's PnC in nature?

Here's mine (for now):

Detective Case and Clown Bot in: Murder in the Hotel Lisbon
Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Fathers
Lucasarts Adventure Bundle
The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief

Has anyone played Gilbert Goodmate and the Mushroom of Phungoria? It's a point and click adventure from 2001 that I played recently. I had the retail version back then when I was around 12 but I got stuck early on and never finished it.
I found the cd recently and I finished it. I found it quite entertaining. It's cartoony and obviously really influenced by Monkey Island and it even has a few references to it. The puzzles are inventory based, at times challenging and mooostly logical, although I had to check a walkthrough 2 or 3 times. I mostly enjoyed the humor, although I guess it can be hit or miss. The voice acting is good, the dialogue is amusing but it often drags tooooo long. There is a chance you'll find the protagonist annoying. It's on Steam now but it has 2 reviews so I guess not a lot of people noticed it.

This reminded me of another game I played around that age that I remember liking, Mystery of the Druids. The reviews for this one are really bad and it's apparently some kind of meme now so I doubt I would enjoy it now though. Anyone played this?

Also any opinions on Memento Mori 2? It has a nice discount and I like its look.

Nice write-up. I think Anna's Quest also deserves a mention. It's one of the better recent Daedalic games. The voice acting is good, the puzzles are very straightforward. The art style is nice and the story had a nice progression, especially the ending!

Read Only Memories had some interesting characters but most of the progression was made by dialog choices. I think it was a neat setting but I wasn't as impressed with it as I thought I would be.

Dead Synchronicity is another kickstarter adventure released this year. The post-apocalyptic setting was very interesting but also tackled some grim subject matter. I liked it but it feels like it was building up to a sequel.

I think Dreamfall Chapters needs to be mentioned as well. The series isn't finished yet but there is only one episode left. In terms of graphics it was one of the most impressive adventure games I've played lately even though it seems to be mostly based on dialogue choices rather than puzzles. With the game running on Unity 5 it is now much more playable than before. I think it will turn out great.

I haven't played enough of Dropsy and Fran Bow yet to comment on them but I think they are supposed to be very good.

I wish I had time to help more with the topic but I think you have a very good start and your write-up reminded me that I have to check out Contradiction.
Good job.

Dropsy is absolutely fantastic, for those asking. It is well worth getting.

So... what have you point-and-clickers got so far from the sale that's PnC in nature?

I hate to admit that I got several Hidden Object games, they're a guilty pleasure. I also got Aviary Attorney.

I have most of the P&C games I wanted from bundles and the likes, though.

Wtf has Gilbert Goodmate and the Mushroom of Phungoria Swedish subtitles :) thats cool. I will by it for my son

Oh hey, chapter 1 of the new King's Quest is 99 cents on the Steam Winter Sale. Time to see how it is, speaking as a newcomer. :)

Yeah, especially for working adults who are gamers; there's absolutely no time (or energy) for long-azz games. I find that PnC games are relaxing and can be played in relatively short bursts, so they are taking more of my time these days compared to their (more time-consuming) RPG counterparts.

Psst -- http://store.steampowered.com/sub/59733/, anyone knows if Memento Mori is any good? 1+2 is going at 85% off. I vaguely recall playing it and not completing the 1st one, something about being stuck in a museum, but I may be wrong.

Well, for that price I think I should buy Memento Mori 2. I recall enjoying the first one. It's a decent mystery game with outstanding soundtrack and settings that you don't see that often.

I have played a lot of PnC games in the 80s and early 90s, but missed the last hurrah (late 90s - before the 'renaissance'). Because of Steam I have now found a lot of these games, but there are still some games I haven't experienced; e.g. the whole Gabriel Knight series. I'm currently playing another Jensen's game, Gray Matter. Now there's a remake of the first Gabriel Knight. Do you recommend that instead of getting the original and do they still hold up (e.g. compared to Gray Matter)?

Get the original Sins of the Fathers on GOG.com, I played through it again recently and it definitely holds up. I find the art style that is introduced in the remake terrible, it removes all the charm of the original.
