Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

My prediction is that the next dedicated Pokemon game (NX or otherwise) will be a massive extension of this. And this game is the gate way to getting people back on Nintendo hardware. GO will be like the gimp version.

If I'm being a freeloader what resources do I really want to conserve?

Look at all these pokemon around me!

You should go ScaryShark!
Yup. People already got soft banned if you google for it.

Not sure the distance needed to get banned but at work theres a million things to do but when I get home its almost dead when it comes to pokestops and gyms. :|

RIP
I do feel for you honestly, but the app just needs to be updated a bit to make the experience more viable and enjoyable for players in your scenario- allowing location spoofing is definitely not the answer.

Does this game work in the background? Can I let the screen go black and just walk around with it in my pocket? Or do I have to have it out with the screen on for it to work?

There's an option in Settings wich will get the game in Power Save Mode if you put your phone upside down

But the game has to stay open, yes

Wow, this game is totally different when you are in a major city.

Today was my first day at work since I downloaded it. London is filled with gyms, pokestops, everything.

I live in a dinky little town in New Hampshire and even here every park has people playing PKGO. Seems like a decent distribution between the teams too to keep things interesting. My biggest complaint (not related to the servers at least) is how long it takes to get the game to register distance traveled. Even a brisk jog seems to not register distance. I went on a 2 mile jog (3.2km) over the weekend and I only gained 1.3km toward hatching eggs.

Has anyone hatched anything of worth out of the 2/5km eggs? I'm leveling up at a decent clip and don't want to hold on to junk when I could be hatching better things.

There's like 5 PokeStops by my office with lures. Sweet. Got a bunch of new Pokemon already!

Well that depends a bit, if you want to make the correct choice that would be Team Mystic. If you want to just kind of be a jerk in your daily life that's Team Valor, and if you just sort of mildly dislike yourself in general that would be Team Instinct.

Up to you!

There can only be ONE team.

Take a look at the gyms around your city, and go based off of that. I would recommend choosing the 2nd most popular team (if you can tell that based on how many gyms each team holds), since you'll have some backup that way. Plus, you get a ton of exp (300+) exp for each victory over an opposing gym. It's a great way to level up!

valor si where its at. mystic and instinct are for nerds

The gyms near my work are pretty much evenly balanced. Each color has a solid foothold.

I didnt think I'd have to make such a hard decision this early in the week.

Hmm, I dunno, everything has its use, Incense isn't really worth using unless you're in a situation where you're not gonna be able to catch a lot of stuff otherwise so save that. Make sure to always have an egg going, people like us who aren't spending money are incubator-starved :(

Thought I might give this a try since it's fucking everywhere now. Available in Sweden? Lol, no. Why.

Because it been "everywhere" has killed the servers for the game and it is getting a staggered worldwide release.

You can use a workaround for both iOS (alternate region account) and Android (sideload APK) to get the game though anywhere

When I read additional ones break after 3 uses I was like nope. Would've perhaps paid if they were infinite.

My concern was that I would waste stardust or candies on crappy Pokemon that I will discard and then the grind to get these resources back will be horrendous.

Pokémon GO’s leveling system sort of sucks. You’re encouraged to pump up Pokémon with expensive stardust infusions, but you will quickly learn that you can easily find another Pokémon at a higher level, and you’ve essentially wasted your resources. For example, I pumped up a 60 CP Drowzee from the start to 120, but later found a 140 one, so everything I invested was pointless. Usually, it seems like the smart play to keep your highest level base Pokémon and transfer the others. Either wait until you have the candy to evolve them, or until you find their evolved form in the wild, then once they reach their second or third stage, really begin to invest. For single-stage Pokemon, it’s hard to tell. I tried to pump up what I thought was a decent 250 Jynx, and lo and behold after spending a ton of stardust, I found a 380 one a few hours later. This aspect of the game can be really frustrating.

Man I want to know, when all is said and done, how much money will have changed hands around the world. Not to Niantic/TPC from players through the shop, but from local communities to their local businesses and organizations. This is unprecedented stuff.

Just saw this on Product Hunt this morning: https://luresquad.com/

People are starting to build businesses around this game and community. Its pretty insane.

"The major cities of the world are currently overrun with thousands of Pokémon trainers" is essentially just a real fact about reality at this moment

you get 15 candy for a hatching. 10km for 15 evee candy is awesome.

Eevee's are really common around me though. I actually have 4 Flareons and a Jolteon. As well as one ready to be evolved in with two more Eevees caught.

Whats up with my balls getting blown around the screen and away from the mon on Yellow or tougher Pokemon? It's super annoying and other than wasting a few balls, I don't see how you know or account for it.

Also, should I be aiming to release the ball when the circle is large, or small? I've heard small but after level 9 I've been getting a ton of failed catches, so I'm questioning myself.

Today's Whomp is about Pokemon Go.

Hey kid! I see you there with that "gotta catch 'em all" look in your eyes! I had that look once too, ya know. When I was a youngster like you, there were one hundred fifty one pocket monsters. We could carry that burden. Just like life, they added more and more to weigh down our tiny, weak shoulders. We didn't have no fire monkeys. We just had fire lizards, and god dangit, that made sense to us."

If you've never read Whomp, it's hilarious.

I don't live in a big city or town and there's loads of stuff around, including a gym at a building right across the street, I'm surprised.

If I drop a Lure will it alert anybody nearby or do they just have to stumble upon it?

Won't "alert", per say. But, it will be obvious that a lure was used at a pokestop if they are near it. A pokestop with a lure has particles flowing out of it. So, they will know.

Meh, took a ferry to cross the lake where I live but there was nothing in the middle lol was expecting an overflow of magikarp honestly :P

In addition to this. Should I be getting notifications on my iphone for anything involving this game?

Not once have I been alerted to nearby pokemon/pokestops or anything for that matter unless I actually have the game open, and happen to hear the sounds of stuff happening nearby.

small.

if you're level 9, likely you are getting a lot of higher CP mon. as CP increases the catch circle goes from green, to yellow, to orange, to red. The different the color, the harder the catch. you can use raspberries from your item pack to feed the pokemon to make it easier to catch. be careful though.. you only get them from stops.

all notifications are in-game only. no internet notifications. (i.e. out of app)

Nope, which I think is pretty silly.

I know cheating is not the answer as it would defeat the purpose but theres nothing I can do unless I go driving for 10 minutes and struggle to find parking. I feel like thats self defeating.

Finding pokemons is no issue, but unless i travel (and pay for gas) im required to purchase pokeballs, which sucks :|
Peace through power!

I hate all of you who have pokestops and gyms at your home or office. Meanwhile, I have to walk great distances to get to ONE pokestop.
:( How great? Is a bike an option?

Do you have AR on? Many report that it makes catching simpler to turn it off.

And small, but there's still no guarantees. I fought a Butterfree last night, used 23 Pokeballs and 16 Razz Berries, hit it so many times with a small circle, and it still ran away. :'(

The higher your Trainer level, the higher CP pokemon you can catch- kind of a nod to the Badge effect I think.

They see it on their map! So they have to be in viewing range of it when zoomed out. Is that what you mean?

There are no pop ups like "hey, someone dropped a lure 6 miles away" or anything.

Why can't you login using the Nintendo Id??
It's another disjointed system :/

That seems to be such a missed opportunity. Let it link with the Nintendo ID and let you get MyNintendo coins and such for daily/weekly goals like with Miitomo. It's promote use of the MyNintendo site and daily/weekly continual use of the Pokémon Go app leading to more chance people will say "fuck it" and buy a load of balls and what nots.

I know this is a Niantic run thing, but Nintendo should have made them get the hooks in for MyNintendo, they really need to unify their account systems and have them bounce off each other and complement each other instead of having a bunch of different games with different account systems.

This app is pretty terrible. I've caught like one Pokemon at my house in days now, and since it requires a data plan there's not much I can do outside of it. No Pokestops in walking distance, for that matter. All of that would be fine, but there's just nothing to do with my Pokemon. There's no virtual raising or anything else. It's just completely barebones.

This is symptomatic of why Nintendo is failing. Just so many missed opportunities when it comes to online things.

I can't even login anymore. Can't authenticate apparently. Was logged in this morning...

I hope, no, I pray that Niantic strikes while the iron is hot with this and puts out updates to add trading/local trainer battling before the popularity inevitably dies down.

The game lives and dies off your ability to use it outdoors. If you can't then it's basically just taking up space on your phone.

I can see a Dratini nearby right now, and I even know which direction it is in since my phone's GPS makes my guy walk around on his own and the Dragonair keeps popping in and out of my list. I wonder if I can get it if I start heading in that direction. I tried to track down a Squirtle for over an hour earlier though so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Edit: Bah, it's already gone.

I don't believe that the app is "complete " yet. It's playable but there is so much more that could be done with that hopefully gets implemented in later updates. But the main point now is to raise your pokemon by catching them and then challenge a gym.

I honestly see it more like a "walking companion" that a proper game honestly. The mechanics are pretty rudimental but they're simple enough to cater to a huge variety of users, just don't expect a mainline pokémon game with deep growth mechanics and battles, at least for now.

when exatclkyu you ust throw the ball?when the colored circle is the same as the white one,or as close as possible to the centre of the latter?

My girlfriend has two Pokestops at work. I have two that are just out of reach. I feel like Tantalus. I'm gonna die. I have no Pokeballs and there's a Dratini near by. Someone kill me.
