Pokemon Gold / Silver for DS announced

No, it is crap and was crap. I'd dig out a copy of Blue to prove it but I'm not gonna bother just to prove it to some random person on GAF.

Because you're wrong. Lemme show you a picture to prove how ridiculously wrong you are

This is the old PC box. All text based besides when you clicked on the stats of the pokemon in the box, or in G/S where you'd see it on the left. You had to save to every time you wanted to move pokemon between boxes. You could only move pokemon without items, you couldn't select multiple pokemon to move around, you couldn't switch pokemon between you're team and the box without going through menus. YOU'RE WRONG

the best part about barry (aka the rival) was that he was the son of the fourth hokage.

plus, we all know that dawn is the cutest pokemon girl thus far, though shell never quite have that effect that misty did *sigh*

i thought this was pretty cute too

I haven't played gen 4 yet, but for what it is worth, one of the biggest things I remember from gen 3 was how much better they made the box system.

The old ones really were much worse. Probably the worst part was the game had to save whenever you wanted to switch boxes.

Well, like I said before, there was a very good reason for this. Blame the Game Boy not the game :P

It doesn't change the fact that it was a lot of dumbfuckery that made box-management a nightmare.

No she will not :(

The main menu on the touchscreen is long overdue, but what I really want is drag and drop box management.

Question: Is there anyone who is like me and refuses to look at new monsters' stats/movesets until they come across them ingame? I don't even know the names of the eeveelutions introduced in DPPt? Thanks to my aversion to guides/walkthroughs*, I'm not even sure I know what a Heatran is, nor how to obtain the new eeveelutions.

I think it adds to the mystique of the game - the fact that there is still more to be discovered.

*
And thanks to the fact that I sold my copy of Pearl a few months after filling the National Dex, having done none of the post-game sidequests. I basically started transferring monsters over from Emerald and Leaf Green, breeding and harvesting berries like a man possessed.

I think the final straw was when I transferred over one of my specially bred, coddled-from-the-egg, EV-trained and IV-selected elemental-punching Alakazams and found it to be completely nerfed in the transfer :(

It was at that point that I realised that I was able to obtain less than half of monsters in the dex and that what with legendaries, GSC starters et al, "catching them all" would become a fools errand. It took the fun out of the game for me and I gave up the whole adventure.

Next time, I'm concentrating just on raising a good team.

Thats all I do. I'll fill up the dex on the way, but unless there is something i'll get for doing so, I just catch and trade the monsters i'd actually fight with.

I think one reason that you can't access in the PC from the field is the possibility of locking yourself into an area if you set free a Pokemon that had a move you needed to leave the area.

You're already not allowed release a Pokemon if it knows an HM move that none of your other Pokemon know.

Yeah, GSC was the last time I even thought about doing the catch 'em all. Eventually realized that it's a meaningless exercise and that the game is more fun if you just focus on picking a handful you want to build a team around.

I also just recently discovered that wifi battles give you the option of automatically boosting all Pokemon to level 100. That is brilliant. I can't believe I just found out; had I know earlier I'd probably have gotten Dia or Pearl a long time ago instead of waiting for the 3rd edition of the Gen.

Either way, between that and the physical special screwball, I am suddenly very happy that I never bothered to raise a full team in the advance gen.

I didn't bother filling a Pokedex until Diamond/Pearl, when finally I thought to myself that after four generations and a remake I should at least do it once, with no better time than when online trading made it more feasible.

I'm not sure I'll ever do it again, though.

It really kills me. Just when I was playing Pokemon Emerald on my (original) DS I couldn't help thinking how much the touch screen would benefit the next Pokemon games. As time proceeded, Nintendo kept including touch screen options in everything from Super Mario 64 DS to Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and even shoehorning them into Super Princess Peach and New Super Mario Bros. where they were unnecessary. Then Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were released in Japan and I imported and what do you know, no touch screen box management. :(

Unfortunately they didn't have that option when playing locally. Why? Bugger knows why. I theorize it's because they're bitches.

But they did add it to Platinum from what I understand. :/

Once you fill out your Pokedex, doesn't some event happen?

Or is it just for bragging rights?

I think some dude in the game just gives you a certificate. :P

It'd be cool if you could register your pokedex online and get some kind of official collectible from Nintendo for the effort or something.

I honestly don't understand what sucks about it. You guys say it could be more streamlined, yeah, a little bit, but anything you need to do can be done with extreme ease. Unless there's something in particular you feel is a pain to do with the current box system?

You also get another star on your trainer card and it's one of the requirements for getting a black trainer card.

So, how much do competitive players worry about IVs? I'm looking at the odds sheet here and wow. Lol

Has anyone ever actually gotten one with perfect IVs across the board?

So your point is that it was slightly crappier. Right. Internet = Serious Business. :lol

Competitive players just use simulators where all Pokemon have perfect IVs.

Thats... Fucking stupid. -_-

Whats the item that lets me run and escape every time? Fucking Floatazels are fucking up my Ditto hunting. :<

The point is that it was a whole lot shitter, it's not that hard to understand.

I can vouch for that, my first Pokemon game was Green, in Japanese, on an emulator.

Nope. Although I know of some really crazy ones. I remember my friend was breeding for a shiny Vuplix and got an amazing one that had a lower chance of happening than a shiny :lol

Timid, Flash Fire, Female - Level 1 with No EVs
31/29/31/31/31/31 (Energy Ball/Hypnosis)

Yeesh.

Edit: There are still people who play WiFi competitively. It's just most use simulators because it's so much more versatile. No breeding means you can change strategies and try out different teams much easier than the actual game. I might hold a simulator tournament later this year when Shoddy Battle 2 is released. Then more people can try it and get a taste of both ways of playing the game!

Something I'd like to see changed in the future Pokemon games is the ability to check your Pokedex like in the cartoon during a Pokemon battle. i dunno maybe some battle techniques or strategy or something as part of the Pokedex entry like Ash checks new Pokemon he's battling that he hasn't seen before. I dunno...

Okay okay. Y'all can rest easy now. It was terrible and has been improved upon. I just hope they don't rest on their laurels and really improve the UI for HG/SS.

So, my experience from playing with the simulators in the RBY and particularly the GSC eras left me very disillusioned with those.

The first reason being that it completely ignores the mathematical odds of existence and instead looks at legality only. This surfaces on a lot of ways - hidden power abuse being the most obvious and obnoxious, but also things like Lovely Kiss promotional givaways, perfect natures, abilities and IVs on unbreedables, etc.

But just as importantly, the accelerated metagame is generally a detriment. In reality there should be a lag between the creation of a particularly potent set / combo / team and the creation of a decent counter, as well as a certain degree of risk in a particularly experimental or off the wall creation. Instead, everything happens at once.

But yeah, now that I know there is no need to spend a solid week fighting the elite four over and over in order to use a pokemon competitively, I see no need to bother with sims anymore.

Does anyone know if Nintendo keeps MissingNo in the remakes?
Missingo wasn't in Gold and siver, it was in Red and Blue. And either way, the would remove him :(

I remember one time I was surfing in the ocean, and Gary came out of nowhere and battled me, and he had a missingo.

I thought MissingNo was also in Gold/Silver? Oh well- but I do remember in him Red/Blue- I assume Nintendo kicked him out of the remake.
