Guess the boycott really worked /s Seriously though, I do worry how the fanbase split will affect the Pokemon community. Will there be separate camps for new and old Pokemon games from now on?
I think you probably won't see the true impact of all this until the next gen.
If they are managing to sell this many copies despite the controversy then there's probably a few factors.
People who don't know.
People who don't care.
People who do know but Game Freak has enough good will with them that they'll try it anyway.
People who know and care but they still like Pokemon so they buy the game and also complain.
Currently there is probably a relatively small faction who are just not buying the game because of the various issues.
For all their screeching online they don't seem to be having much influence on anybody else and most mainstream publicity has been positive.
However, now that millions of people have the game they will be able to decide for themselves if it's any good, if it's crap, whatever.
So if enough people are playing it and thinking "oh my god this is garbage" then there's a good chance they will not buy the next one.
Or at least they will do some research before buying the next one.
Presumably this will end up being the best selling Switch title so far but Let's Go didn't do as well so obviously there is something that is causing people to say I didn't get Let's Go but I will get this one.
I seem to remember that Let's Go was met with a bit of outrage also because it just wasn't what people wanted but I'd guess there are a lot of people out there who played Let's Go, liked it, and as a direct result decided to buy the new one.
What I'd love to know is how many of these sales are Pokemon first timers or people who had Let's Go as their first one.
