Pokkén Tournament |OT| King of Iron Tail Tournament

Has this been confirmed anywhere? Most people say it doesn't. I've yet to see any tests.
PKSparkxx tested it. You can also check yourself by comparing damage online from the recent stream where shofu had max attack to damage in the showcase.

People just didn't notice when eyeballing it because of how relatively small the difference is.

That's a pretty lame oversight even if the difference is small. Should not exist in ranked/tourney play at the very least.

wow it does, I did a combo in this match and did 221 instead of the 192 regularly does, I have 12 on attack skill points

First impressions: still don't know what I'm doing.

Charizard seems super mix up heavy and has potential to be amazing. I don't think he's fun to use though.
PikaLibre and Chandelure are incredibly fun and I think I'll be focusing on those two.
Game is 1000 times better when you mute Nia.

Charizard seems to be really Aerial heavy from me playing against him. I feel like people with strong Anti-Airs will do very well vs him. He's got a lot of options in the air but playing Gardevoir who has an Anti-Air that hits literally everything on the screen besides grounded opponents makes the matchup pretty easy.

Oh my god my d-pad thumb hurts so much.

I've basically only touched Braixen in the 8 or so hours I've played today, minus a little Lucario at the beginning.

There's so much to take in that I'd honestly be overwhelmed starting over with a new mon.

The getup-mixup in this game is scary as hell.
  • Will they combo you? Don't jump or you'll get rekt.
  • will they grab you? Don't counter attack.
  • will they counter hit you? Don't attack.

Especially if you are next to a wall. You cannot sidestep in 2D, so that wall is like a death sentence if you are unsuccessful at risking a jump over your opponent.

Not to mention the support rushdowns. Using Frogadier (or Snivy in close quarters) to force an opponent to block and then rush to grab them is some dirty shit.

Pikachu's 2D thunder attack in the air has no landing lag when you block it. Free actions in a standard attack, yay.

Chandelure in 3D mode is a shit.

Oh yeah, online netcode is really really, really, really good. Better than Smash 4, better than Tekken 6, better than Tekken Tag. And I'm playing over wifi. Out of about 50+ matches, i've only had one really bad one, and one that went really bad all the sudden when I started to get the upper hand (mom push the switch!!!).

How is the online?

I'm hearing mixed things.

Fantastic. I'm playing with WiFi and my setup is less then preferable and my matches have almost all been what I was expecting out of a wired environment. One match out of 20 suffered from some awful latency but it was the outlier by a mile

EDIT: Netcode's legit, Minnesota to Japan felt like what I generally get when going Minnesota to California in other fighting games with synchronized netcode (Though I don't think this game has 100% synchronized netcode but that's a whole 'nother can of worms, close enough to classify it as synchronized though i guess)
Does Suicune suck or do I suck?

Tried to main it and got wrecked online.

I was actually going to do Weavile or Lucario but Suicune is so unique in a game full of Pokemon who stand up lol.
Between Ranked and a few random friendlies I went 23-7 with my Suicune today. For me that's a pretty decent record. lol

But then again, everything I learned about Suicune I learned from the guy that kicked Shofu's ass. :p

I think I'm gonna stick with Machamp. I keep trying other Pokemon, but Machamp is just too satisfying to give up. This is the first fighting game in forever that I found my character on the first try.

I would like a backup guy though, we'll see. Maybe Gengar.

I can't get enough of this game. A lot of the characters feel very good to play as and I'm having a hard time picking a favorite. I still haven't even tried all of them.

Online is alright, pretty decent as far as Namco games go and it's definitely better than Smash's. However, matchmaking is arguably the fastest I've ever seen, Christ, I think that's what makes the game so damn addicting, no time to meditate after a loss, just go go go.

Otherwise, the game is pretty much a mind battle like any other fighter but the lack of techs after being knocked down is terrifying, you get a stupid amount of damage off mix ups in this situation.

Yeah, I'm not digging this part. It's way too easy to lose half your hp on a 50/50 guess.

Hope once the meta stabilizes the game turns out great and does well. It's nice seeing a lot of streamers get into it. I was actually surprised to see Rico enjoy it, lol. Isn't this game mostly snubbed by the FGC?

On the other hand I'm watching Maximillion play it and he's not enjoying it, lol.

I think max is stuck in low rank hell. He's also not using Blaziken's counter Attack Dash cancel which is quite good for distance, so he's not really using all the tools he's got.

Edit: I think the game got quite a bit of attention after Justin Wong's interest in it. It feels like a weird mishmash of SF4, Marvel 3, and Naruto Ninja Storm.

To be honest, I think sticking to watching Rico is would be much more enjoyable than watching Max. On Max stream, it might be because he has a losing record so he runs into the hail mary opponents, but his opponents and him seem to be throwing attacks at each other an just hoping it hits. Rico is entertaining with his Machamp, since he seems to play the neutral well enough and plays like a fighting game grappler and walks them until he can grab them.

Shofu seemed to run into a real good Suicune, I think the zoning potential looks really awesome in this game. Most people online really aren't using all their moves, like in this video I didn't even know Suicune had some of those projectiles haha. Most people are just trying to land blizzard and that ice beam.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Ive been watching maximillion dood's stream for hours and he has been getting incredibly laggy matches, im guessing it might be on his end mostly but it has beena bad experience for him, also he went from loving the game to slowly not enjoying it because it isnt as reliant on combos as he thought. :(

Ferrum league is basically Combo Practice League.

Pikachu's juggle combo that ends with iron tail is hilarious to watch when used on bigger characters.

Played a bunch on ranked last night (only up to E2) Definitely getting better.

The FGC mostly ignored it because they assumed it was just some naruto ninja storm type arena fighter, even when the invitational came around and showed it had some stuff, those who didnt either know about the invitational or didnt care to watch it, stuck to that narrative, but the closer this game got to release, the harder it was for them to ignore it.

Definitely agree with you and Neoleo. I actually learned a lot watching Rico's Machamp. He abuses the body slam much more than I was, same with the light (weak) combo.

Also LOL that video. I saw it the other day and WTF'd when Suicune threw out the ice wall. Hadn't seen that move used ever.

He's not able to deal with projectiles in field phase at all when the matches get laggy.

That and I dont think he realizes that there are characters who are made for zoning and rather thinks that some just have strong attacks, he kinda has it right when he was in training mode that blaziken was gonna be a rush up character, but he hasent adjusted to it when he gets in those matchups with lag

Ah, that does seem to be the general mindset that I've noticed. I wasn't expecting much myself until I saw shofu's videos. I really enjoyed going through the tutorials as the game kept throwing on layer upon layer of depth. Feels like any other fighting game, but we'll see how it plays out.

Man I'm loving the crap out of this game. I'm dedicated to maining Sceptile (because grass types are the greatest) but my God I'm having some extreme difficulty keeping up with the insane damage of power characters.

Most probably low tier.

While watching streams of this I'm thinking to myself 'man, it must be incredibly satisfying to start a combo knocking them into a Phase Shift only to end the Combo to knock them back out of it.'

Online shows how much of a noob I am but had some amazing wins where in the last round with few life energy left I'd suddenly play the game nearly perfectly. Countering attacks properly, using combos at the right time or pull of the resonance special attack just in time.

Jeez, Red League is such a slog.

Edit: Wait, you can do grabs in the air? Some AI Sceptile just grabbed me mid jump and pile drived me.

Pikachu is so fucking tough. I usually hate this stupid Pokemon but that Mishima blood got him swagged out.

It's a special move that only works on airborne opponents

machamp i believe is the only character with air grab

Honestly I'm having a hell of a time just digesting everything they fed me in the tutorial. I did all 5 of them, went Ferrum League and just mashed like a damn noob. hoping it will all sink in over a couple of days, I tend to absorb content gradually when learning brand new systems.

We're still in the honeymoon phase. Wait until after April and maybe EVo to see how well it will do with the FGC.

It's funny how furious he is in this game. I'm taken aback whenever he smiles.

There's things I really love about Pokken, that I didn't expect to like. Others that I thought wouldn't be an issue, will prevent me from playing it more.

Connection quality has been extremely rough for most of the night. Dealing with 10-15 frame delay while in field mode dodging projectiles is hell. The matches that did run smooth, which was maybe 1/4th, the game was really fun. Desperately want to try an offline VS. mode. I'd like to say it's an issue with my connection, but all my other fighting games run great.

Have you tried looking at the early access tournament? most notably the exhibition and other later matches. It's too bad that you were having connection problems this particular night with this game, a stroke of bad luck perhaps.

Blazikan just as you said when you was in training mode, you dont want to be in field phase with him, he is pure rushdown and is dangerous when you close in on him, so zoners will eat him until he gets in.

I played for about an hour last night. My early impressions are that this doesn't really play like Naruto or Tekken, but has some weirdly funny things in common with Marvel VS Capcom.

I played it with the Tekken Tag 2 stick and it seemed fine. The arcade stick button layout might even be better for this game with the 2 button moves. The Wii U pro controller is also fine.

I was actually going to do Weavile or Lucario but Suicune is so unique in a game full of Pokemon who stand up lol.

I haven't played any other character but Suicune simply because I haven't lost a single match with him yet. Almost 100 matches strong.

Are you trying to play as him in a later match while he's still level 1? That might be why.

I built him by solely focusing on his Special technique thingy (the one above the support skill) and attack. His best moves in (still trying to remember the names here) the close combat battle mode is up blizzard, back barrier, grabbing into a combo, down attack where he uses his tail to puncture the enemy, and stalling.
When in the more open space mode (the mode that starts when you are in a open field) stalling, hyper beam, sky hydro pump/water gun, air blizzard, side water bubble thing, back surf, grabbing into a combo, and some sort of water drop ability are the best.

My friend described Suicune best to me when I was chatting to him on my phone, he's practically the Pokken Equivalent to Villager in terms of his moves. You have to set up some things, get timing right, be careful when getting up and personal, but with the extra ability of wrecking shit up when activating special mode since that was your focus.

Yeah same. I tried other characters, but I always went back to Machamp.

I've always wanted to main a grappler for once and I'm happy I finally found one I really like.

Anyone have a controller recommendation for someone who wants a larger D pad? I have a PowerA pro controller, but the damn thing's D pad is smaller than my thumb, as I bought it for the stick placement to use for Smash Bros.

Weird that Max had connection problems yesterday, most people have been praising the online. Hopefully he tries it a couple more of times.

the specialized pokken controller by Hori has a nice broad d-pad

The official Wii U Pro Controller and Wii Classic Controller are both great.
