Pokkén Tournament |OT| King of Iron Tail Tournament

Tried online for the first time tonight and got 5 wins out of 6 with Gardevoir. Personally, I'm pretty happy, though I feel I am overly reliant on magical leaf and therefore too predictable. Also I really need to work on my defence as my one loss came from a Briaxen who managed to rush down on me and bodied me completely.

Still, an overall better start compared to my SFV career

This Shadow Mewtwo fight is ridiculous.

He is piss easy for the first two rounds, then the last one the difficulty sky rockets and he just combos you non stop.

This is probably a dumb question: how do I break out of grabs? When I try to get people with obvious grabs, they turn red and break out.

In the triangle it says normal attacks beat grabs, but I thought it was just that the grabber would get hit. Is the break effect just coming from hitting x/y/a when they're about to throw you?

Yeah, If you try to grab someone who is performing an attack, the game will turn them red to show you they have the advantage over your grab, their hit doenst connect when this happen but they can continue their combo if they notice they got the advantage over you.

I need to ask.

Is it genuinely possible to see Pika Libre and not want to fly away with her into space forever fighting the cosmos with sick ass wrestling moves?

I've never loved a Pokemon so much.

How bad is he on a scale of 1 to Magneto from Children of the Atom?

Can't say, I've not played many fighting games. I guess if you are familair with the genre it wont be so bad. There is a definite increase in difficulty over the previous Ferrum matches though, which you just steamroll. Still managed to do it on my 4th try at least.

The first battle with Shadow Mewtwo at the end of the Green League really surprised me. Like the league had been a total snore fest in terms of difficulty, and then Shadow Mewtwo came along and actually started doing combos and stuff. Still beat him like, but was taken aback by it. xD The funny thing is Blue League is then back to being pretty easy.

Shadow Mewtwo isn't too bad, but if it manages to land a hit say goodbye to at least a third of your life br. I actually managed to perfect him on the third fight with him. The fourth fight with it is BS though, his health is tripled to 3000 and you can't use synergy burst but it can. Oh and you actually have to win that match.

Yeah that is the one I was talking about lol.

What do you all think is the best skill to give Nia? I've been using the synergy boost one, but now I've unlocked better support pokemon, I dunno if it's better to go back to the skill that gives you a fully charged support.

After sucking quite noticeably online I shifted to Suicune whose more methodical and no doubt annoying approach is seemingly more my speed, thus I managed to pull my win percentage back up to at least 50%.
I didn't want to become the projectile guy but clearly the all out attack of Blaziken wasn't working for me.

I've been using the fully charged support one. Frogadier is great for keeping up the pressure so the more I can use it in one match the better.

Holy shit this game low res, does anybody know what resolution it is?

Looks like 540p to me, maybe lower. HUD and menus are all in 720p.

I'm surprised they didn't go for the Fast Racing Neo approach of 640 x 720 instead - would have looked crisper in motion.

It's hard to make out any kind of detail in Pokken Tournament gameplay which is a shame because it's quite a handsome game.

Hmmmm... not sure if I'm going to be into this game long term. It's so different from other fighting games. It's hard to really get a feel for things.

Stupid, stupid question but does the input of the U Pro Controller get faster when using the USB cable or is it for charging only?

I've played a bit of Garchomp. I feel that dig brings you a set distance to the opponent. It can be canceled with R or a jump before they reach them though. If you are too far away it won't be able to reach. Feels really nice to hit and can be great for ducking projectiles. Although it does is pretty unsafe and if it's blocked you'll be getting hit pretty bad.

I'm not great though, so this is just a rookie's take on the move.

Oh and there's like two angles of entering the ground I believe, one from ground and one from the air.

Thanks for the reply.

I love how the move works and whole concept of it. I thought you had more control over the directions instead of a straight line, but it is still cool. I hope I get a chance to play Pokken soon.

EDIT: Netcode's legit, Minnesota to Japan felt like what I generally get when going Minnesota to California in other fighting games with synchronized netcode (Though I don't think this game has 100% synchronized netcode but that's a whole 'nother can of worms, close enough to classify it as synchronized though i guess)
Between Ranked and a few random friendlies I went 23-7 with my Suicune today. For me that's a pretty decent record. lol

But then again, everything I learned about Suicune I learned from the guy that kicked Shofu's ass. :p

I haven't played any other character but Suicune simply because I haven't lost a single match with him yet. Almost 100 matches strong.

Are you trying to play as him in a later match while he's still level 1? That might be why.

I built him by solely focusing on his Special technique thingy (the one above the support skill) and attack. His best moves in (still trying to remember the names here) the close combat battle mode is up blizzard, back barrier, grabbing into a combo, down attack where he uses his tail to puncture the enemy, and stalling.
When in the more open space mode (the mode that starts when you are in a open field) stalling, hyper beam, sky hydro pump/water gun, air blizzard, side water bubble thing, back surf, grabbing into a combo, and some sort of water drop ability are the best.

My friend described Suicune best to me when I was chatting to him on my phone, he's practically the Pokken Equivalent to Villager in terms of his moves. You have to set up some things, get timing right, be careful when getting up and personal, but with the extra ability of wrecking shit up when activating special mode since that was your focus.

Thanks guys!

Yeah it's not my style but one of my favourite Pokemon designs. Always liked Suicune.

I'll keep practicing. :)

Man I am enjoying this! Loving how Machamp and Garchomp feel. Their animations are so cool!

But man I'm just button missing right now. All I can really remember are guard, grab, jump. All my real moves are just me going crazy at the moment.

Netcode-wise, I've had more stable matches against Japanese players than dudes from the States. Nutty, huh. One match where I lost due to lag, one where the match froze and booted completely, and the rest were okay (on my end, couldn't tell if the other guy was lagging). So I have no complaints, other than salty anger at the one where I lost.

One of the (small) things I really like is how the Special attacks are all named after Pokemon moves, ones it could actually know. Makes them easier to remember.

omg the damage on chandelure. using gardevoir a solid 20 seconds work for 200 damage and this mofo melts half my health in a couple hits

Same! I've got the attack triangle down to an art but the little bits in between are just me pressing random buttons. I have a 90% win rate in ranked though!

Hey are all the attacks with all the Pokemon performed the same? Like with Smash Bros?

all the moves are plain old directional inputs but outside of that I wouldn't say it's that similar to smash. not accounting for some tricky timing dependent stuff on a few characters, it's pretty simple execution wise

It's actually quite interesting. Yes, it's pretty much smash, in that Direction+Button will do a move. The difference comes from the combo strings (Y,Y,Y/X,Y/X,A,Y/etc.) and the damage, speed, and so on. Also depending on the Pokemon, the forward and backward inputs do the same moves whether in Field phase or Duel phase. So, in Field, forward becomes UP and in Duel forward becomes LEFT because it's based on your position.

Can anyone translate what this actually means?

You can guard?

What's a night slash?

¯\ (º_o) /¯

Night slash is Weavile's back + A attack while in duel stance. When you do it you dash backwards and rush forward to attack however if you hit guard during the animation you'll stop just short of your opponent. It's great for mind games since most people will start charging a counter when you dash backwards.

EDIT: Oh. What thread did you think this was?

Mostly. But Suicune uses all 8 directions + A in DP, 6 directions + X in DP, and has an attack that requires you to hold down A that you can perform other actions while charging. So slightly more complex things like that are in the game, but nothing too complicated.

...this game is excellent! Wasn't really too hyped on it but had enough store credit and figured why not...very impressed. Really fun ! Hope it does well so it becomes a generational franchise. They got me forever haha

Been using Sceptile he seems really killer

Best player ATM in the Umeda region is a Suicune so no johns lol. Just won his third tournament in a 4-week timespan, Umeda's a pretty strong Pokken region, too.

Not that nutty. Splatfests have confirmed all my worst fears about American internet.

I'm loving the game, but it really needs more options in training mode, namely a record opponent feature.

I guess it's to vs. mode if I want to find out how certain attacks will interact. :/

So I just found out you can guard cancel night slash.
