I really need to stop engaging with conservatives I know. I showed him the Forbes piece on how Obama has spent less than any president since Eisenhower, and he refused to acknowledge that it is true and eventually asking another liberal person in the conversation how they sleep at night knowing they support murderers. When someone devolves into that lazy abortion bullshit because they dont want to talk about the issue at hand because they want to "win" they aren't even worth engaging.

conversations with my conservative crazy relatives has been devolving into Yahoo style comments, "wake up, SOCIALISM!!"

I tried tellin my dad socialism shouldn't be a naughty word. His reply: "people in this country didn't die for socialism, and thus we can't have a conversation anymore." ... I'm not sure people died for capitalism but whatever. I can't wait until we can just have a real conversation in our country about these things without having an irrational fear of a word.

Well to be honest it's not like it has a great record. Also blame Marxists for using the word interchangeably or jointly with communism all the time.

President Bush allowed abortions under his watch and funded Planned Parenthood. How did your friend sleep at night for 8 years?
I'll provide the three most typical responses:

1) Bush kept us safe!

2) Bush wasn't a true conservative anyway.

3) Typical liberal sheeple, brainwashed by the gotcha media.

Obama Goes It Alone

Wall Street Journal: "The president does almost no fundraising for Senate or House candidates and hasn't transferred money to other party election committees. His numerous campaign offices rarely coordinate with local candidates or display signs for anyone but Mr. Obama."

"At rallies, Mr. Obama seldom urges supporters to volunteer -- or even vote -- for other Democrats running for office. Sometimes, he mentions other politicians in the room without noting that they are seeking re-election. He rarely shares the stage with other candidates."

This strikes me as a ridiculously horrible idea, especially with the Ryan budget (allegedly) putting house seats in play. I'd imagine some house and senate members can't afford to be seen with Obama, but there are plenty that can. Abandoning the "run against congress" idea completely is a bad idea

Nixon took this basic idea to an extreme in 1972, monopolizing the entire party to get re-elected while the republican party suffered nation wide.

What the heck, y'all? Sure, Fareed made some mistakes, but hell, he's one of us, dang it. We can't just throw him under the bus, since he was still a force for good (generally).

I would say MI/PA/WI going for Romney is about as likely as AZ/IN/MO going for Obama.

Probably the best summation of the situation in one sentence that I've read on the internet.

MI/PA/WI are only in play if Romney is winning the popular vote decisively, just MO/IN were in play when Obama won the popular vote by 7 points but are clearly not in play now.

There's really no evidence that Romney is even ahead of Obama at ALL in the popular vote, so those 3 states really shouldn't go away from Obama.

Can't be bipartisan with a Democratic congress!

Maybe he saw how awesomely his campaign for the House went in 2010. A lot of his "favorites" like Tom Perriello still lost, albeit by smaller margins than guys like Alan Grayson.

But Obama did it plenty in 2008, if I recall correctly.

Here: a) there isn't as much of an advantage for a candidate to do so, since either someone is trying to get (re/)elected INSPITE of Obama, or if they're in a solidly blue-enough state they won't need Obama; b) Obama needs to make sure he's solidly ahead, first c) Where, really, is Obama going to make much of a difference? The only three states I could see Obama being helpful in are MA, CT, and maybe VA -- maaaybe NV, but that's really about it.

???

*is confused*

Zakaria was caught plagiarizing one of his articles or some shit, which caused CNN and Newsweek suspended him for a couple weeks.

The liberalirati reacted as you would expect, and basically wants to see him metaphorically hanged because we're supposed to be better than that.

Clint Eastwood Gets Cut From Romney RNC Video

A video mash-up of speakers from last week's Republican National Convention does not include an appearance from the " mystery RNC speaker," Clint Eastwood.

The two-and-a-half minute video posted today to the Romney campaign's YouTube account features former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, VP nominee Paul Ryan and of course, Romney himself, but it leaves out Eastwood's controversial speech.

Hahah. It seems having Clint Eastwood at the RNC backfired on them quite heavily to the point where even the Romney camp is trying to forget it happened.

Poor Clint, his inclusion is almost necessary.

Another picture of Obama in Colorado- I gotta say, this is an absolutely gorgeous backdrop. That lack of voter enthusiasm!

There are two rules in journalism. Don't fake a story and don't copy some else's stuff. Its really not that hard to cite a source, sometimes we forget on the first draft but that's why you need to read it over. If you screw up and break one of those rules your credibility is dead and almost impossible to rebuild. The only reason they get away with this at Fox News is because they don't care.

It's kind of why you have too.
For one fucked up citation? It'd be something else if he were lifting whole articles or fabricating quotes, but when it's just a few paraphrased lines involving quoting a third party I'm inclined to believe him when he says he got his notes mixed up. He was suspended before they reviewed the accusation and was reinstated when they found it was an isolated incident.

Yeah, considering students not being paid are held to a high standard so should he.

If he went to Ohio and told people to vote for Brown...well not sure it would work out well for Brown.

The people in close races, don't want to be associated too closely with Obama, the rest are safe already.

The only two candidates Obama should publicly support and urge people to vote for are Warren (MA) and Hayes (CT). But he doesn't campaign in those states. Only close race where you could look for public Obama support is VA Senate.

Students, as far as I remember, will most likely fail the paper and/or the class. I highly doubt they would get kicked out of school if the incident was equivalent to what Fareed did.

Manos ain't even trollin' here, guys. Plagiarism is literally the worst thing you can do in academia and journalism.

If you want to argue plagiarism is just a menial sin, that's a whole other ball of wax, but by historical standards a three-week suspension for plagiarism makes it look like Zakaria would need to commit an actual felony to get fired.

Are you aware of what students are subjected to?
Yeah being failed and posssible expulsion.

And having seen exactly what he did, I also doubt as much.

A professor for a computer science class I took in junior college said that if a student gets caught for plagiarism, they not only fail the class, but they also get kicked out of college and their plagiarism infraction would remain on their transcript forever and wouldn't be able to transfer to university.

Seemed a bit extreme. Probably was just repeating some old wives tale or something.

It was a suspension during which they reviewed his other work. Did not find a pattern and so did not fire him.

Computer Science is taught is so many wrong ways in many colleges.

If I was teaching a computer science course for programming, students would be free to use whatever online resources to write their code. Because that's what you do in the real world.
