Haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but 538 creator Nate Silver's on the Colbert Report tonight! This guy is really hitting all the stops! Maybe...maybe just maybe his forecasts are accurate?! TV NO LIE!

If his forecasts are accurate he will become very rich. I like the guy, I hope he is right.

Hey, Memphis has a huge population of black people. If they get out and vote this year it could bring TN in for the dems.

One of the greatest things about Nate's rise was way way way back in the primaries, when he posted regularly on Dkos as Poblano, and one of his critics (a Hillary supporter I believe) said in a comment thread that nobody would take any notice of his figures because it was... get this.. too much "inside baseball"... :lol - This was before it was known about Nates other stats love :D

I like how GOP surrogates and strategists are now all following up any mention of Obama with 'who we know very little about'. These talking points sure do get followed. The shills weren't saying that a week ago.

Wasn't the McCain campaign trying this whole "you don't know him" routine a couple of months back, found out it wasn't working, and moved on to something else? Why try it again and expect a different outcome?

538 is just a bunch unproven psuedo election math that usually favors Obama signicantly so liberals flock to it.

I don't get why a lot of people here put tons of stock into it.

Hah, looking at that, I think Dick Morris really is as stupid as he appears. He just hasn't moved on from the Clinton campaigns.

You know what sucked about the VP debate? And could possibly be the case for tonight's? Both candidates were talking in their own personal bubble. I hate rules, not when we're supposed to be convincing people to vote for a platform. Now THAT'S socialist.

Because I know Monte Carlo simulations and they rock.

Well..albeit a short track record, he was the only one getting the uber-close Democratic primaries right. He practically stood alone.

Oh noes, they registered poor people to vote that wanted to own homes. They are the EVIL.

Yeah, because you came here to be persuaded. I have debunked the "poor people owning houses" caused this problem a million times and I'm tired of typing the same response.

Sweet, I'll add it to the list.

Isn't McCain something like 4 inches shorter than Obama? A GOP supporter trying to get some subtle subconcious cues into his images, or me being paranoid?

McCain is listed at 5'7" but thinks he's 7'5". Pathological narcissism is a terrible thing.

Even more bizarre that he's actually looking at Obama. We know that doesn't happen.

It's actually nice to hear from him again. As much as he's Mr. Plastic man, he somehow has become more real than John McCain. Shows ya how bad McCain has gotten.

EHH EHHH EHHHH EHHHHHH!

From zompist: http://zompist.wordpress.com/

The consies have figured out who to blame for the meltdown of the financial industry: poor minorities! Yes! Nothing to do with the insane lending practices of rich white men in an unregulated shadow banking system; it’s all the fault of government forcing helpless bankers to sell houses to the darkies!

Daniel Gross has a must-read response to this nonsense:

http://www.slate.com/id/2201641/

The Community Reinvestment Act applies to depository banks. But many of the institutions that spurred the massive growth of the subprime market weren’t regulated banks. They were outfits such as Argent and American Home Mortgage, which were generally not regulated by the Federal Reserve or other entities that monitored compliance with CRA. These institutions worked hand in glove with Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, entities to which the CRA likewise didn’t apply. There’s much more. As Barry Ritholtz notes in this fine rant, the CRA didn’t force mortgage companies to offer loans for no money down, or to throw underwriting standards out the window, or to encourage mortgage brokers to aggressively seek out new markets. Nor did the CRA force the credit-rating agencies to slap high-grade ratings on packages of subprime debt.

The CRA is about as far from a possible culprit as you could find. Its purpose was to prevent redlining: banks’ practice of accepting deposits from poor neighborhoods but not lending there, which is not only immoral but stupid. As Gross notes, sensible lending to the poor is quite possible: e.g. Nehemiah Homes has built and sold homes to the poor in New York for 27 years, and run into 10 defaults on 3900 homes. If Carl Icahn’s high-end construction firm WCI Communities had success rates like that, it might have avoided bankruptcy.

There should be zero tolerance by now for right-wing irresponsibility. Laissez-faire does not laisser les bons temps rouler. Just as power corrupts, lack of oversight leads to ruin.

Foreclosures on million-dollar homes surge

The housing crisis that swept through working-class and middle-class communities across the country is now creeping into the leafy driveways and the gated communities of the nation's most exclusive towns.

One symptom of these times: a surge in the number of million-dollar foreclosures. According to RealtyTrac, the number of homes valued at more than $1 million that are in some stage of foreclosure has swelled to 7,968 between January and August. That compares with 4,214 during the same period last year.

The number of $2 million-plus homes in the process of foreclosure has grown even faster, surging to 499 in the year-to-date compared with 201 for the same period last year. Home values are based on comparable, recent sales in the neighborhoods.

It wasn't long ago that bidding wars over luxury properties were commonplace, as buyers emboldened by the booming housing market paid ever-dearer premiums for what seemed like a no-lose investment. More than 64,300 homes priced at $1 million or more sold in 2007, more than triple the number in 2002, according to DataQuick.

So unless you think that people who can afford million dollar homes are "poor", the problem was pretty much across the board and endemic to all classes of society. The rich and middle class were just as overextended, if not more so.

But WHY ISN'T OBAMA LOOKING AT MCCAIN?

There's something in the body language we need to be looking at!

Here's my bet: once.

You're insane. You think his handlers will let him make that same mistake twice? McCain got hammered for like 3 days after the last debate because of his body language.

He's going to be Obama's best friend, tonight. In terms of physical cues. What comes out of his mouth... that's another story.

Did you hear that? In PA they have had 500,000 new Dems register, and the Republicans -28,000. Yes, negative twenty eight thousand.

Did someone just post a link to the national review in this thread?

A very wise TV executive once told me that the key to TV is projecting through the screen. It's one of the keys to the success of, say, a Bill O'Reilly, who comes through the screen and grabs you by the throat. Palin too projects through the screen like crazy. I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.

sat up a little bit straighter :lol :lol :lol :lol

How do Obama-supporters respond to this article about Obama's support of ACORN and democrat pressure groups lobbying for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to lower mortgage standards?

The fact is, most subprime mortages didn't fall under the CSA, and those that did were better, and better regulated than non CSA loans.
