It doesnt need to fail for people to come out and say he is an idiot. Plus, as soon as this thing passes, the Dow is going up 500 points. Being against something that shows progress right away is going to make you look even dumber.

It's the least he could do, considering he shoved aside any attempt to bring accountability to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, practically right up until the day they were nationalized.

And the only people guaranteed to be saved with the bailout are the ones that work for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. Everybody else? Might as well start praying.

Thats my thought, alot of Joe Six Packs are probably seeing this, and are probably regular Letterman viewers that like the host.

The political jokes on these sorts of shows dont really apply to the politicos out there, we mostly watch Daily Show/Colbert.

The bailout will pass, Obama will vote for it.

The Democrats will not pass any bailout bill unless a "majority of the minority" acquiesces and McCain also votes yes.

Keith is probably right though. If they cancel this upcoming debate, it will set a precedence in order to give reasoning to cancel the VP debate.

To me it's like McCain is saying the election really isn't that important... We need to focus on the critical stuff like the financial crisis.

Wrong wrong wrong. The election is the only time in 4 years the populace gets to (almost) directly express its will on the administration of the government. It's damn important. And out of this whole charade of a campaign the debates are one of the few bright moments of genuine information exchange, when policy can move to the forefront and the posturing moves to the background. You want to set that aside after nearly a month of debating Sarah Palin's similarities with pigs? Fuck that. If McCain or Obama had any critical role to play in addressing the legislation on the bailout, yeah, they would have to take part. There are 98 other Senators and hundreds of Congressmen willing and able to debate and present the financial legislation, but only two men with a realistic chance at the White House.

If you want that office, John McCain, get out there and face your opponent and tell me something on live, unscripted TV about your policies. If you can't or won't do that you aren't a viable Presidential candidate.

Yeah I think the whole thing about McCain telling Letterman he was heading back to Washington, only to appear on Couric's show is going to be really unsettling to a lot of people watching the show.

My Mom is a big fan . . . she constantly is telling me about his Bush gag reels.

It is actually kinda weird . . . my parents were not citizens when I was growing up, so I never really had any political influence from them. But now that we are both politically active, we agree. That has more to do with my siblings though since they are closer to my parents (literally & figureatively).

Just got home.

Ok, Obama did the damn thing today. He basically put McCain in a corner as I see it by committing to the debate and mentioning the whole multi-tasking thing:

Scenario #1: McCain decides not to attend the debate.

Obama has pulled his punk card. He would be basically damaging his chances at winning heavily,if at all. If Obama then took the 90 minutes to outline his plan to fix the economy, unopposed, good grief.

Scenario #2: McCain decides to attend.

Obama has pulled his punk card. He would basically be showing up to a debate that he didn't feel he needed to for the "greater good" of being in Washington. It's the equivilent of being called out to fight on the school yard or at an Old West saloon. It looks bad.

The way I see it, in taking the position he did today, Obama set himself up for a win/win jump on the chessboard.

edit: I mean really, her "late night television" is Jeopardy!. Why does she need to be in bed before 9, and wake up by 4 am, when she has no obligations in the world? It doesn't make sense.

But yes, Letterman has that wholesome midwestern market locked down.

Man, if it was 30 days later I think I'd be walking around with a permanent boner at the damage the McCain camp likely did to their campaign today. I don't think this transparent nonsense is going to fool anyone. It just makes him look weak and afraid, and we know from them electing a dumb but cocky cowboy president two terms in a row that a lot of this electorate just doesn't like their Commander in Chief looking weak. What a day! *grins and rubs hands together like Monty Burns*

I've watched the Palin interview about 4 times now and still can't remove my jaw from the table. It's just surreal. Anyone who has a read newspaper the past two weeks could have answered Couric's questions better than her. Just flat out embarrasing and offensive.

That's funny, my grand father used to go to bed at like 7pm, 8 at most, and my grand mother at like 1am. They would wake up at around 5am :lol
