It's a speech, it's made to excite. It's limited in depth, unless it's specific (and even then...), so he's oversimplifying. He has to hit on certain points. He will speak deeper about all of these topics.

Sorry, I just expect a little substance, Obama's got enough fluff, he's very good looking, he needs to show he has a concept of the real problems facing people, all I'm hearing is if you want cheaper gas by a hybrid, otherwise you're SOL.

I like that Obama talks about some guy in Pennsylvania that lost his job and can't afford the gas to goto get a new job - then follows it up with saying automakers need higher fuel standards (which will equate to more expensive cars) - yes, a guy without a job needs a more expensive car!:lol

I can't believe people are clueless enough to not look past his Tiger Woods smile and see the bullshit he talks about.

If you knew something about the automotive industry, you'd know that isn't necessarily true. However, I fully expect this response to be unanswered, just as your last jump into PoliGAF was.

It's no more "sickening" than a person supporting McCain a little bit.

A little bit?

The policies of FDR
The Charm of Regan
And the spirit of MLK

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

That isn't a little bit. That is worship.

Regarding fuel efficiency...

Despite all the recent advances in automotive technology, the average MPG of automobiles has actually gone DOWN slightly since the 1980s. Something is fucked up there. :p

I'm not sure how improving automaker fuel standards would prevent them to continue to purchase cars they can afford?

It isn't even a car-specific thing. Fuel standards refer to a fleet-wide average fuel efficiency

Well, if you look past that, his entire message included the requirement that that type of research would create more jobs(well paying too -- that wouldn't/couldn't be outsourced), and thus would balance itself out. Pretty simple to put together, I thought.

Because this makes much more sense (forcing corporations to research in certain directions) than doing SIMPLE things like starting to build nuclear plants for most of our household energy and drilling the VAST amounts of oil we have in ANWR, Colorado, and the Gulf - all of which will create jobs and lower prices.

Have you not seen the clip of Charlie Gibson clearly laying out to Obama that EVERY time capital gains taxes were lowered, government revenue went up, and yet Obama was like "we'll see" because he knows that a large portion of his base is more about sticking it to the man (taxing the "rich") than reality. Hell, the government is bringing in WAY more money now than it ever has in tax receipts, why would a big government spender like Obama want to change that?

He is those things though. It's not wrong if it's true

To be fair, some of the worst ones have led with great oratory too.

Of course - Hitler for one - I am simply noting that oratory is a PRACTICAL skill. One with tangible results. The conventional wisdom for Obama's foes is that somehow speeches can't do shit. When in fact they can move mountains.

I agree with your point. Just running some interference on the logical conclusion to that statement.

Great oratory is a practical skill, and if you're using it to do what is right it is only a net positive.

I have no problem with people supporting Obama, and I even agree with him on certain things, but this constant fellating is pretty sickening. It's almost as if people are building up this image of a demigod and I'm beginning to think that the "cult of personality" accusations are more accurate than I originally thought.
They are completely accurate and anyway whop says otherwise is lying to themselves. Obama is an example of cult presidency but that doesn't make him a bad leader. Ronald Reagan was a cult leader,Kennedy(after death), MLK, Abraham Lincoln, etc etc. and they are remembered fondly.

Cult leaders aren't bad. If what they do is bad, and they are not opposed, then you should worry. Obama hasn't done anything except win in completely fair ways.

Though I do believe this type of thinking will hurt the country in the long run, right now that attitude is just wrong.

I'll be honest--I am not as moved by Obama's speeches as some of you. He has incredible charisma, and they draw me in much more than anyone else's speeches, but I can usually tune him out or start to count his slipups. But that was not the case tonight. He was on fire.

Ask them to prove it, when they can't tell them to sit down and shut up.
