Press Reset: The Story of Polygon - financed by Microsoft for $750,000

The worst part is the melodrama. It's not like this is a risky, self funded start up. That guy's signing a mortgage cause he moved for a better paying job. He's not signing a second mortgage to pay start up expenses. Most of these guys left good jobs for an even better paying job at a new company with a whole lot of venture capital. I'm sure that's very exciting for them, but given the current state of games journalism, it doesn't seem any riskier than working at any other outlet. Nintendo Power just closed! 1up is dying a slow death. Gamepro was shuttered. EGM seemed like a scam. Even Giant Bomb faced a pretty uncertain transition recently and IGN has not insignificant turnover. It's a volatile industry.

A trailer hyping a documentary that's meant to hype an unproven gaming website that will almost certainly continue the awful trend of hyping announcements of announcements.

Some industry this is.

I want to buy the video game license rights to this documentary. And then they can review it and it'll create a black hole of self-reverence that will consume the entire staff for all time. WHO'S WITH ME?

You guys better not make them stop doing Rebel FM, it's my favorite gaming podcast. I even like Arthur and I gladly donated to Tyler's PC fund.

That said, what. the. fuck. is. this. shit.

Yeah outside of recording equipment I don't see what there is wrong with using the rest of the funds to feed guests who take the time and money to travel, and to buy things that were talked about on the podcast. If they used any leftover funds to buy wiiU's to be able to talk about that shit at launch that would be fine to.

No matter what life serves him, I continue to find new reasons to increase my respect for Jeremy Parrish.

"Do you know about shin megami tensei games because I sure as hell don't"

If only he knew

Pssst...he does.

Let's not go crazy now.

This video exudes a little too much unearned arrogance. Even if the site could unquestionably demonstrate that they have changed video game journalism, it would still be self-indulgent drivel.

the site hasn't launched. they haven't changed anything. from the content they've already produced they are no different than any other gaming blog. well, that's incorrect, they are different: most bloggers do not have the same inflated level of self-satisfaction.

I would not call these bloggers "accomplished" or "journalists".

Never forget!

I will never get that image out of my mind when I think of gaming "journalism"

And this is coming from someone who just started writing game reviews for my local paper

Giantbomb and everyone else has turned this from being one of the most distasteful things ever to one of the best things ever. I still can't stop laughing at Brad's.

I'm wondering if they regret anything.

I'm sure some of them thought it was pretentious going in. .but it's pre launch PR. As long as it's not indicative of how the site is when it's been live for a month it'll be fine. Considering how fantastic The Verge is, I have hopes it'll be shooting for that bar.

This is the greatest thing to happen in this corner of the internet in a long time. So much greatness has come of it.

I really like Chris Grant and Brian Crecente, I've known them both for years and they've done good stuff.

But a movie about the guys who are supposed to be writing the stories about the guys who are doing the real work (making the hardware and software that fuels the industry they are covering) seems a bit backwards.

You're just talking down to them from your ivory development tower. You've been out of the game too long Luke Smith. Your words are wind to men like Brian Crecente and whoever all the other losers are involved with this project whose names I haven't bothered to learn.

Actually this gives me a thought. Games reviewers are like baseball umpires/football referees. If I know their name, then it means they are bad at their jobs.

So good. These guys are so damn full of themselves.

Where is that hipster-ass group shot of all The Verge editors that just screamed "I wish this was the 70s!"
