If I had to guess i bet a lot of work has already been done on the doc and it would probably be silly to shelve it

Who ever came up with the idea in the first place should have the thick framed glasses slapped off there head though.

It was a Dumb ego stroking idea.

The reaction from GB and other industry guys was great.

I can only hope they double down on this partiular brand of indulgent indie wank and bloated self-importance.

It's just been way too much fun.

Sadly, they'll probably spin this into justifying what they are saying in that teaser trailer.

This is a fake quote! said:
"We're taking a risk because this is how gamers respond to things they don't understand. We're taking a risk to try to make them understand, and we need to be strong in the face of adversity and be true to our beliefs. We believe that they're ready to be educated, and we are the men for the job.

and blah blah drivel blah ego blah self-championing blah blah whatever.

You have to wonder how early in the process they decided to make this, to get all the footage of them dicking around and sitting on steps telling us how revolutionary they are.

"Hey, let's make a new website! Where's our documentary team!"

These parody videos have been great already, and I'm looking forward to seeing how our ridicule evolves alongside their hubris. The GIFs alone should be priceless.

Unless they actual stage everything for the movie and "recreate" the scenes... Considering who were talking about here, I wouldn't be surprised.

I hope there's a scene where they all crowd around a PC cheering as they announce the documentary in the documentary. Then the music gets all slow and sad as it shows closeups of their faces, hands curled around their mouths, NeoGAF and Twitter reflected in their eyes as they silently read comments. Shots of them rubbing their faces and sighing, leaning up against desks and walls, worried that The Grand Experiment is about to fail.

Oh wow, I never considered that. This is all part of the Polygon story.

i still dont get it,why gaming press think they are THAT relevant? and i dont mean just this dudes, almost everyone on the press do thinks like that.

I don't have any interest on his lives, what they drink, what partys they go,really no interest at all.

For me the relevant people are the developers, these folks made the games

Echo chamber.

They want to be in game development, but don't have the relevant skills. Even if they get hired at a game studio, they are usually community managers.

It's still a relatively new medium (or whatever you want to call it), so a lot of these guys probably have visions of being the Lester Bangs of video game criticism.

well,thats true

Im the only one who thinks gaming press dont take criticism very well? u can see a lot of reviewers on podcasts being rude to developers or games -this thing sucks, its garbage, etc etc- but at the same time if a dev does the same -this review or reviewer sucks- they make a big drama of that?

well giantbomb are full of themselves too,i cant listen to any of their podcast, the last one is two hours talking about everything except games, maybe is not a podcast about videogames and i need to search elsewhere

Wait, you people aren't being ironic when you say positive things about Giant Bomb?

Oh NeoGAF you circus of hypocrites.

What?

GB produces entertaining content.

Polygon isn't even running yet and they have already proclaimed they will revolutionize the gaming press. They also made a absolutely hilarious trailer for a documentary about themselves.

What exactly is hypocritical about laughing at that shitshow of a trailer for a site that is probably going to focus on the personalities of the site more than the games. Just like GB, a site that does that exact thing, yet they don't seem like fucking hipsters dramatically talking along to piano music with low camera angles.

I don't see what's hypocrite about liking Giant Bomb.... A lot of posts in this thread perfectly explain why Giant Bomb is liked and Polygon is not... It's all about claiming something you either are not or still have to prove that you are. That trailer really isn't helping since there the guys of Polygon think they are going to change the gamingpress forever.
While the guys at Giant Bomb just do what they do and are like for it by some, while hated by others. But at least at Giant Bomb they don't pretend to be something they are not. They are just who they are.

Talking about hilarious random topics as they come up =/= being full of yourself.

Their podcast has always been about them bullshitting with each other while talking about games and enjoying tangents. It's always been like that. It's a very free-form podcast.

I honestly don't see how you can listen to it and get the impression that they are "full of themselves," though.

Lol Penny Arcade outstanding in terms of reporting and writing really interesting stuff? Maybe if you like improperly representing contemporary issues presented through unclear and muddy writing. While it isn't Kotaku/IGN levels of bad, PA is basically two guys who have no idea how to tackle any issue from different angles, other than standing on a soapbox made out of high school grade English writing.

Are you talking about the comic or the report? I thought PA Report was probably the best thing to come along in ages. PA Report and Gamasutra are about the best things going in gaming journalism (maybe EDGE, too?).

Gamasutra and Edge, definitely.

Soft drinks and restaurants are hilarious random topics? It's like listening to some normal people talking about normal things. It's pretty cool if you don't have some normal people to listen to, I guess.

Guys, I'm flipping through pages of this thread and not finding the trailer played in reverse with the Dead Island trailer music behind it.

Surely someone did this already and I'm just not finding it, right?

RIGHT?

No, but now I want it to happen because I think it's a good idea!

We're all waiting with baited breath for you to explain this supposed circus of hypocrisy. You might want to start by linking to a single piece out of the thousands of hours of Giant Bomb content that is similar to this making-of-Polygon trailer.

We now enter the part of the thread where people air shocking statements about beloved websites to garner attention. We need more PR meltdowns to divert their efforts, stat!

How do they come across as self important? If anything they come across as the total opposite of that if you ask me, especially Brad and Vinny who seem like some of the most humble guys on the planet.

Not to mention that being self important is pretty much the complete opposite of the ethos of their site. They are all about being themselves and making no apologies for it.

They talked about soft drinks and restaurants like... once.

Pubic hair, HOT97, BBSs, vintage arcade machine buying and repair, the logistics of poop throwing at a hotel, and Jeff stealing doors from abandoned houses to fix the one at his old home are pretty random topics.
