Press shot of Apple iPhone 5C (budget model) leaks

Yeah. Me, too. But zewone is right; non-contract buyers are the minority, at least in the US.

That said, I think unsubsidized sales will grow. A cheaper* phone will get more people to go off-contract. This could be good for T-Mobile. Also could work out well for Virgin Mobile USA, which -- to this point -- has only sold older iPhone models (or at least had to wait over half a year to sell the latest model). I bet they'd get the rights to sell the cheaper model from day 1.

* - My unsubstantiated guess: the $500 number isn't real. It's a leak, so $350 or $400 sounds cheap by comparison when the phone is released.

I'm really saddened by how people can believe anything to be a real leak.

Who wants this? I dont.
If I want a plastic phone the size of a fucking shoe I'll get a Galaxy. Iphone is perfectly fine the way it is. It didnt even need the taller screen of the 5.

Another silly, hyperbolic post about the size of Android phones... What else is new...

I could say something equally stupid that all iPhone users are toddlers, hence why the are content with the size of their phone....

Anyway. It's size is serviceable, but wouldn't hurt if they were a smidge bigger.

$399 would be a reasonable price for this phone.

Similar android phones would be around 300 so you add the apple tax to get to around 400. Maybe 450 if they want to be dicks.

They are pretty good but serve more as a symbol of status and a fashion statement. It's a phone.

Only to whiny people that don't own them, it seems like. Most people see other iPhone owners and think little of it. I don't think I've ever actually encountered anyone with the attitude that someone must be "successful" if they own an iPhone. It's a $200 phone, not a BMW.

But, at the end of the day, is it really innovative and a step forward?

Probably not a good idea to expect innovation from a company's B/C-tier line of phones.

Though I'd argue that there is not a lot of room to innovate, even in the high-end at this point.

Obviously, the phone pic (if real) isn't a deliberate leak by Apple. They don't do that. Don't be sad. Hardly anyone thinks that. I think there's a chance that bogus price numbers are being thrown out there, though. I should've said, "If the $500 is a leak, then it's a misdirect..."

Well, I'm not specifically responding to you, but many people are reacting in the thread to the news and price point as if it came from a generally well-known news source, but this is just some random site.

Yeah, this happens in the runup to every Apple event, nowadays. But I think it's part of the fun. In fact, it's more fun when there's a bunch of misinformation going around, and everyone eats it up -- even though, by now, we should all know better. I like when everyone's surprised by what actually gets released. It's more boring when everyone's right.

I also like when people get disappointed by Apple not adding pie-in-the-sky rumored features that they never had any intention of including in the first place. The stock tumbles during and right after the events, and then creeps back up again.

Video of the rumoured champane model + one of the cheaper plastic ones.

I actually want one of the plastic ones, as long as the black isn't an ugly glossy finish.

Android: 1,000,000

Apple: 1,000,001

Lol. This is the last thing Apple fans can point to... and it's so weak.

Apple has given up market lead, hardware superiority, firmware superiority, innovation, etc.

Now that the Play Store has essentially caught up, what argument will be left?

That iPhones contain the essence of Steve Jobs?

Lmao!
:lol

Call me crazy, but I like how the plastic iphones look. If they would give them the same specs and the same price as the Iphone 5s I would choose a green or blue Iphone over the aluminum version

I see your point. If the plastic is decent, it's more durable than aluminium. I dropped my iPhone 5 once and it got dented a lot on the corners. That would never have happened on my old 3GS. Alumium is nice and all, but it's just not that practical enough.

I still don't want to believe they made a cheap iPhone and a champagne colored one :/
I don't like what is going on at Apple...

1) The champagne one, when put beside the black and white really does look like it belongs. Like it was meant to be there from the outset. It's really not that bad.

2) I still believe the iPhone 5C will replace the iPhone 5. It's an iPhone 5, but in a slightly cheaper shell so they can hit that next tier down, aside from just the drop in tier for being a year old, while also making a larger differentiation to the iPhne 5S. It's not so much a 'cheaper' iphone, as it is a 'mid-range' iPhone.

It won't...they'll still want to get rid of the 5 stock. They'll just have 1 older model in their lineup instead of the usual 2. It's the 4 and 4s that's messing up the uniform resolution anyway.

If it's 400 dollars it will fly off shelves like a swarm of locust.

I think it needs to be cheaper than that if Apple are serious about taking on Android in the entry level smartphone game. $249USD outright or free on a contract would be the sweet spot. But it looks like the 5C won't be "entry level" at all.

I think they're not after the entry level market because it will tarnish their premium image. $400 won't blow up their market share but it will attract a lot of people going for the mid and high end Android phones.

The stock will run out pretty quick if they don't continue to manufacture it, Apple don't keep a lot of inventory.

But allegedly Apple have found it impossible to cut the production costs for the 5 to the level that they were with the 4/4s etc so it can reduce in price when the 5S ships. Hence the 5C.

If i'ts matte plastic I MIGHT be on board, but in the end I'd rather go with aluminium.

The all black alum is nice, but I still like the plastic ones better. Same boat as you, though I don't think it will be a matte finish. I'm just hoping for something less glossy than the iPhone 3G

I liked the feel of the 3G and 3GS in the plastic... so the new profile with the plastic might be a good move. I am still on the iPhone 4 and not seeing the need to upgrade yet. I have also invested in a tomtom carkit so would like to squeeze as much time out of the kit before upgrading.

iOS 7 is sooooo fucking ugly.
But a budget iPhone is kind of an interesting idea, and it doesn't look too bad.

Sort of a tangent, but... it's weird how the issue of market-share became such a big topic for Apple.
Historically it's never been about that, as they were more positioned as a luxury brand, and something of an underdog.

I remember in the 90s when the Mac had something like 2-5% marketshare compared with Windows (maybe it still does? I don't know). Everyone knew it, Apple would even joke about it, but that wasn't the point. The point was saying "hey, we're small but we're BETTER, and here's why...".

After the iPod and especially iPhone, this thinking sort of shifted, and if feels like Apple's become a victim of it's own success in a way. Always boasting about growth and marketshare. Now they are the monolith to take down. I liked them better when they were underdogs with something innovative and different.

Anyways, we now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

if they feel that they have maxed out or are close to maxing out the super high margin market - or they feel that high end android might start to erode that, then a small expansion of market share makes sense.

If they are really going to sell a warmed over 5 with a plastic back for $4-500 then it will hardly impact their margin at all.

Frankly I'm amazed they've managed to maintain their margins for this long without competition forcing at least some squeezing.

The reason for this is that in 2008 third-party app revenues became the key driver of their entire business. To keep getting the best apps to sell their devices they need to deliver the developers with the biggest revenue.

Revenue here is a component of two things VOLUME * ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). As a standalone hardware business (iPod Nano, MacBook Pro) they did just fine maximizing ARPU with low volumes. However with apps this does not work, they can't find enough users to offset low volumes with high app spending.

So their only option to keep their ecosystem compelling is to stay competitive in volumes. Which is why a $400 low end offering would be seen disappointing by industry pundits.

Obviously competition is a big reason for why apps became so critical - competitors have now great design, UX and features as well, so apps is where the battle for device revenues is played.

Well. iPoor or otherwise, a blue iPhone is automatically way more appealing to me because I'm shallow like that.

Okay...now how about for the normal people who don't care about that?

I'm just saying, it's pretty dumb for people to whip out all this crap about specs when simple stuff like scrolling isn't perfect on Android (And yes I know they've made great strides with Project Butter)

I thought this had been a non-issue since Jelly Bean.

I would only consider this if it were priced competitively with the nexus 4 in the android ecosystem. If the prices is higher than 400$ I don't see the value.

To be fair, I don't like most Apple products, but I bought an ipod classic and an ipod touch: two products were I feel like there's no competition that matches these two products.

In the phone market however, the iPhone is not appealing to me at all.
