Prey (2017) |OT| Trust no one. Not even your shelf

Someone spoiler this for me: is there any sort of tie in to the original Prey? Any hints of anything? Or is it legitimately 100% unrelated?

from the wiki page:

Arkane's version does not use any of the planned sequel's assets, and only incorporates the name and the broad theme of the protagonist being hunted by aliens of the previous games.

Am I the only one who thinks the title of OT is extremely spoilery?

how is it spoilery? everyone should know about the mimic enemies in the game that take the form of different objects in the game, like shelves.

This game is... incredible. The sequence breaking it lets you do is off the charts, and with a little bit of exploration and thinking you can achieve so much. This may be the best immersive sim since Deus Ex... the first.

ya its insane. Beat it a second time and did some stuff I didn't do in the first playthrough by a longshot.

Well might have a glitch...

Anyone that finished. Did you get the objective for
the repo man and its telling you he is somwhere in the exterior of talos 1. Cause Im not finding anything....

I really despise it when people drop posts like that. It makes me think that he's gotten to the ending and there's some secret shit Arkane dropped on Morgan's shelf in his office that actually spoils the ending or something that you wouldn't know without context. I've been spoiled more on this forum through that method of concern trolling over out of context meaningless shit than I have been legit spoiled by careless posters by a thousand times.

Yup. That stuff controls so well and
has perfect physics. It's probably the best implemented zero-g stuff I've seen in a game, physics and controls are spot on.
Exactly. It's an aspect of the game I had no clue about because I didn't watch too much prior to launch and then once I experienced it, it just felt perfect.

The further into the game I get, the more impressed I become because I was really on the fence with buying or passing. I made the right choice this time.

Yep, it's probably the best immersive sim in years for sure. Already can't wait for the second and third playthrough which I'll do one after another just to see, try and do something different. Also, survival elements would have been like icing on the cake. Make it happen Arkane!

Alternate way of getting the
Disruptor Stun Gun
(before the area where you get the GLOO Cannon)...

In the room with the safe and whiteboard (from the video you have to watch in your office)...climb on top of the large case near the whiteboard and there will be a briefcase...inside that is the Disruptor
This is the kind of shit that gets me rock hard. Knowing that I could of gotten something way earlier than most players get is fucking great. Especially since I felt like I explored that area a lot and I still missed something. That's super fucking cool.
Keep in mind that Fabrication lab has a powerful enemy inside there. so if you are going there early in the game, you gonna have a very tough time.
I used a combination of throwing a cannister and
stun gun
. The second did a ton of damage. He was also kind of stuck in some objects too, but still.
Quoted for new page --
I'm on Hard but to be honest it feels pretty easy.
Yeah, I'm on Hard and I still feel like it's pretty easy. Early game is harder since you don't have a lot going on and if you're exploring everything you'll run into some tough enemies. Also mimics can hit you for 20+ health which is what your health recharges to. That can lead to some annoying death when trying to smack an object. I've gotten used to it though and it's pretty easy now.
as someone who fucking hates dealing with the corrupted operators more than the other enemies (theyre able to follow me most anywhere in an area, and tend to be in groups which inevitably leads to 2-3 spitting flames in my face if i alert one) being able to gloo them down and hack them to leave me alone has been absolutely invaluable. Lvl 1 repair has also been handy to have for whenever i find a busted recycler instead of having to backtrack.
I got hack 3 as soon as I could once I saw they needed that. I had to kill a few, but in places like the Hardware Labs I have a mini army of them in that one big room. It's a wonderful feeling in a way to destroy this atmosphere of seclusion and spooks by getting all these robot buddies.

I think what I love most about this game is it does very little hand holding , no waypoint markers every 5 mins , no breadcrumb trail , secrets and sections you only unlock by exploring every nook (passwords)

And even secrets in video messages that can only be accessed if you pay attention .

Its far exceeded all my expectations (I thought all the prerelease stuff looked okish) , and it's fast becoming my top 10 games of all time .

That's with me barely even 1/4 way into the story.

So yeah, just stopping by to say that this game is great, becoming one of my favorites of this year, only behind Horizon for the time being. Never expected this to be this good, but damn do I like being surprised.

So found a few others posting online about the same glitch. Welp looks like it might be time put the game down. Damn I was so close to the end too.

I spent whole day yesterday playing this. I really really like it. I'm doing a no neuromod run so I'm really taking it slow. I really hope they add a New Game Plus though, I'd love to do a second run upgraded from the jump.

I found a shotgun in the demo... Now I'm way past the demo part and I still don't have one...

Either they moved it in the final game or I just missed it (more likely) and this is killing me lol

They haven't moved it far, it's in the
security office on the ground floor of the lobby

I'm getting destroyed by the standard mimics at the start of the game. Super start of game
i just got the gloo gun and the next room has like 4 of them and I just seem to be so bad at fighting them. Just whacking away with the wrench. I'm on PS4 and I'm thinking if I need to adjust the controls or switch up my tactics? What am I missing here?!

uhh, encase them in gloo and swing away? it's not that hard.

Shoot with gloo gun until they can't move (only takes a couple of well placed shots) charge your wrench attack, hit once and they'll die.

Does anyone have a bug where Morgan can't/won't run or walk in a straight fucking line? I've only noticed it recently so I don't know if something triggered it or what.

I'm on ps4.

Would it be amiss to say this is the best immersive sim since like...STALKER? I don't think even the new Deus Ex games or Dishonored gave you the freedom and trust in the player's abilities that this does.

I hope so, can you elaborate on the freedom other than the fantastic multipath level design?

I found STALKER to be really mediocre to be honest, this is a new system shock game with an old IP name tacked on and I couldn't be happier.

Everything is amazingly well realized, believable, even more so than SS2's small scale environments and is more in line with the depth of SS1 but slightly smaller.

I mean I love both HR and its sequel, they do a fantastic job of being a great and faithful reimagining of classic DX gameplay, but this game is far truer to those immersive sims of hallowed yore than the official sequels.

I still give the edge to STALKER because Prey chickened out on the best aspect of the PC immersive sims games: no real time inventory.

If they had kept it for this game, even if it was only on PC, I'd probably say yes.

We still got that hardcore mode difficulty coming. Would be cool if they added that along with the other elements

Finally finished my first playthrough after 22 hours (I explore a lot).

It's late and I'm tired so all I'm going to say is that I absolutely loved it. Kudos, Arkane. You created one of the greatest space stations I've ever had the horror and pleasure of exploring.

THAT ENDING HNGGGGGGG

I really hope they do, then the game would be basically the perfect SS3. I was sooo disappointed when I started playing it and it didn't have a real time inventory. It's like man, the AR UI and inventory was the coolest shit about System Shock! Even Dead Space got that right!

I hope SS:R has VR support simply because of how mindblowing it would be to experience that AR interface in the way the developers dreamed of it to be experienced in real time back in 1994.

please tell me the
poltergeist
enemy is not as scary as i think it will be.

Theyve been more like an unsettling annoyance
particularly since it sounds more human than the other typhons ive met
than super scary imo. Their gotcha is a lot less jump inducing once its happened to you once (and even then its not really scary so much as "wtf is going on?") compared to something like a mimic where I'll occasionally get got by a wellplaced one every now and again or alerting one of the higher class typhons i didnt realize was in the area.

omg, just spent an hour trying to open one of the doors in the trauma center
where you have to shoot gloo inside then bounce a dart off it to hit the button to open the door. That was ridiculous

Does anyone know where to get the keycard for the secure pharmaceutical room thats also in the trauma center? I looked around online and only saw people talking about doing some glitch to get inside from the demo

This game is so brilliant. Everything about it is A++. The freedom of exploration is endlessly rewarding and exciting. It's so satisfying to get into locked off areas using creativity. The best thing is that every time I've tried something, the game has always allowed for it. It's just awesome. Every level/area feels like an open world zone with an enormous number of possibilities, more then Dishonored or new Deus Ex's in my experience. Dishonored 2 had wonderfully elaborate levels in terms of architecture and engineering and design, but this encorporates gameplay systems into the levels really well. Something as simple as shooting the toy arrows at buttons to unlock doors is so satisfying and that's just the simplest example. Gosh it's good.

Edit:
Anyone else play this game like me and just constantly carry turrets everywhere I go and deploy them at every door

Yup! I've rolled through a few areas with a small army of turrets, it's awesome. It's allowed for my ammo situation to remain really good too.

While I definitely would've liked proper real-time hacking and inventory, I'd say using computers/interfaces and the fabricator and recycler make up for it in terms of immersion, along with all the modern tech that older games didn't have like tons of objects and a realistic physics engine.

From NXGamers PREY:Technical analysis & performance PC/PS4/XboxOne:

Some notes:
- an i5/970 combo is enough for 1080p/60/max. CPU load is surprisingly high, can reach 70-80% load on all cores in some areas.
- Xbox One, PS4 hold 30fps
- no Ps4Pro improvements
- Texture quality is slightly higher on PC
- Console shadow quality is somewhere between high and medium
- Console AA is more effective, but the game looks slightly more blurry

50ms playing 60 FPS capped with V-Sync or equivalent shit, I guess.

Sound design is amazing in this game. Sound mixing however needs improving. The radio/suit/intercom voices are just far too quiet! Especially in the middle of combat, you can barely make anything out.

How?

There was a PC game called Shattered Horizons. It was a zero G multiplayer shooter by the people who made 3D Marks. It had similar controls.

Someone spoiler this for me: is there any sort of tie in to the original Prey? Any hints of anything? Or is it legitimately 100% unrelated?
Completely unrelated, Arkane Austin were basically working on this game and during pre production I think Bethesda just asked if they'd like to call it Prey.

Didn't this come from his testing of the demo version on consoles though?

I'd be surprised if there are no improvements on the Pro version in the final release.

Arkane are so good at creating spaces. This space station feels like a real place and there is so much good art around it. It really feels like a vanity project by a super rich corporation. It's lovely how the station even has a slight rotation to it and that ingame clocks advance.

I love the turrets and that you can carry them around. I fight by placing turrets and throwing exploding canisters at these phantoms. Serves them right!
