PROMETHEUS UNMARKED SPOILER THREAD!

For me, the biggest 'WTF' moment was with the autodoc machine. Charlize Theron stated her goal to minimize risk, which is why she used the lifeboat as her personal quarters and (presumably) why she had the expensive autodoc in the lifeboat with her. If the autodoc was meant primarily for her, then why was it only programmed to operate on men?

The autodoc and Lifeboat were for Weyland.

And it's not so much because he made sense as character... There are some potentially interesting ideas here and there, taken separately, but his motivations are quite fuzzy overall. In the end, his purpose in the movie mostly seems to be to troll, troll and troll some more. While that (combined with Fassbender's performance) certainly makes him more entertaining to watch than the other characters, that's not saying much, and I don't know that I'd call that good writing.

He made complete sense to me. He is also my new favourite Alien android. And yeah he stole the show for sure which is awesome, because hey who wouldn't want more screentime for androids instead of humans.

I wannna know! Link? Spoiler tag?

Pan out from a snarling face that we think is a Chest Burster. Pan further out to reveal it is a fly in a straw that one of the ship's gunners then shoots into the window. Splat.

It was.... so odd that it actually got done. With CGI and everything.

The Alien Anthology is actually a really good box set in that regard. Multiple versions of all four films. Three hours of behind the scenes footage for each film.

HP, your take on Prometheus..? or should I just backtrace your posts here..

Curious to know.

Like I said earlier in the thread(s), it was a great concept torn to shreds by Ridley Scott wanting to tell the press how fucking awesome he is. It suffered greatly because it was an Alien prequel, when it did not need to be one at all. It also was very heavy handed when it came to the metaphor of the film. He didn't need to have all of those Christian mythos references strewn about. It was stupid. The Serpent had no reason to be in the film at all other than the Eden metaphor, which was just shoehorned in.

I wanted to like the film. I enjoyed the themes. I enjoyed how it was basically was the tale of our Gods coming to kill us all because we killed Jesus. That spoke to me as something very human.

Too bad Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof felt the need to write a script that was basically them jerking themselves off.

Here.

I suspect Jeunet, not Whedon, is behind that one though. Seems like his style.

This thread is like the Mass Effect 3 ending thread. Some people were okay with the ending of that game...until they read the thread and realized the big plot hole the ending created.

Holy shit, i didn't remember the Space Jockey being so big.
What a fucking mess this movie is... the more you think about it, the more depressing it becomes.

And it fucking sucks, since it's so breathtaking to look at...

something something children in space suits

something something closer to scale in close ups with adults..

Yeah, agreed, and I got the feeling of them just spitting on me as the film was ending was the "OH YEAH LOOK AN ALIEN." Which was totally just tossed out so they wouldn't get backlash from the movie they told everyone they weren't making to begin with. Its like they wanted the hype and the praise for the script and ideas, but they didn't flush any of those ideas out.

And it's not so much because he made sense as character... There are some potentially interesting ideas here and there, taken separately, but his motivations are quite fuzzy overall. David to me, I could feel his "irritation" or his discomfort when someone made a comment about his artificial life, the trying to learn, or make his mask/body more pleasing to the eye, I feel like he thrived in the knowledge of knowing that our creators too were tangible things, and not some magical faith that humans try to separate themselves from him with. I just mean as a character, as a written character. His was decent. But thats because the writing didn't explore anyone. Noomi's story was so fucking meh it made my balls freeze of boredom, and that really was it. And least we forget the clear as day "FATHER." SHOCKING SPOILER ALERT.. such a let down.

Really? The whole reason everyone but Ripley died in Alien was that they did the dumbest thing of all in breaking the rule and letting them back in the ship. I actually loved that Vickers basically said fuck you and flamed his ass. Also, besides the idiot rock lover and science guy wandering around, no one else did anything dumb enough to warrant such statements.

Ash was under company orders to secure a specimen so of course he lets them in. The message from the company even said that the crew was expendable.

My biggest problem with the film was the flight crew so willing to sacrifice their lives. I can understand the captain as his convictions were established earlier in the film. However the other two were a little to gung-ho about joining him in death.

They actually had to get children to film that scene too. =)

It doesn't matter. By using kids to represent the crews, it implies that the original intention of the original film was to make Space Jockey something that is gigantic in proportion to human (and elephant-like). Instead, here we got it retconned to something that is just slightly taller than us and the elephant thing is just a mask.

something something doesn't justify the discontinuity.

its just salt on an open wound at this point. We've all waited for this movie, and it blew. So I'm a little in denial to where I'm ok with the bullshit line of ... well.. something happened that caused the space jockey to no longer be melded or one with the seat, and is half the size, and is a giant man baby..

Sigh.

this should have been a new sci-fi. this is going to suffer from every other media/poop where they try to fit too much stuff into one continuity.

They actually had to get children to film that scene too. =)

Which makes the choices made in Prometheus even dumber: why the fuck did they decide to portray the Engineers as 2mt tall creatures, when in the original Alien they clearly emphasized the huge size of the Space Jockey?

It's becoming more and more ProMEHtheus for me.

There are some aspects that bothered me...
Like how he said he wasn't big on "wanting" things (Lindelof said in some interview he doesn't believe androids would want things) and yet the movie would hint at him possibly pursuing his own agenda here and there (there's being ambiguous, and there's being vague for convenience's sake).
Or how he reacted to Weyland saying that he doesn't have a soul (what does that even mean? aren't you supposed to be super-smart and not exactly impressed by mankind, David? why would you care about that shit?).
Or his relation with Shaw, which kinda reminds me of some kid in kindergarten bullying the girl he likes ("yes, I know how your father died, because the details were in your file, and... JUST KIDDING I'VE BEEN SPYING ON YOUR DREAMS" ... programmed to make people feel comfortable).
Or that scene with Holloway's "because we could", which kinda sounded like the justification for his assessment of mankind (am I to understand you never got a better answer than that drunk douche's, really? "try harder" indeed, David!).

But thats because the writing didn't explore anyone.
Yep...

A new viral emerges o_O

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDanyJA5aRU

Ridley Scott's much-anticipated Prometheus may have already hit theaters, but that doesn't mean that the film's viral marketing campaign has hit an end. In fact, it looks like it may keep up until at least this October.

MovieViral.com has posted details on how a clue at the end credits of the film has led to a new website, http://www.whatis101112.com that includes faux-details on a book by Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland and new video that seems very similar to his TED talk from last February (or 11 years from now, depending on how you look at it).

Check out the video in the player below and see if you can decipher the clues that will point to the next step in the viral. Though the date of October 11th could tie to the film's home video release, it happens to fall on a Thursday which, though not an impossible, would certainly be an unusual street date for a DVD.

It's becoming more and more ProMEHtheus for me.

It's really more like PoorMe-theus. Because the only one really suffering here is us. We anticipated the movie. We paid money to watch it. We were excited. And ultimately we were disappointed. Lindelof and Scott don't give a fuck. They got paid, and judging from the box office so far, they're going to get paid some more. Fuck em.

About to see it a second time. Particularities I should look for?

Near the end when Shaw is running away from the ship rising out of the ground, does her crappy helmet swing back and expose her to the apparently toxic climate for a split second before snapping back?

I've seen it twice and can't work out if it's the lighting or a gaffe.

Also, get ready for cheese overload on pretty much every part of dialogue. Round 2 really makes it riper.

Hah. We're the ones who get fucked over. 5 months from now there'll be a 30 minutes longer director's cut of Prometheus and we'll be only too happy to buy the Blu-Ray. I'm sad to say I'll even buy the current version just for the gorgeous visuals. There's a lot too like about Prometheus despite its many faults. It's just a shame that the bad overshadows the good.

i don't even think adding 30 minutes of content will add. it's not like it's just suffering from a lack of development, the writing in this just plan sucks. it's the suckiest suck to have ever sucked.

So have we gone from the denial phase to anger phase? Cause I am. Such a shame. I think more than anything I'm angry at the missed opportunities that this film could have been.

Edited to add: dear self, please replace your avatar as soon as possible.

i never played mass effect 3, but i imagine this is how they felt when they got to the ending.

HRRRRRGHHHH!!! Must refrain from saying anything more because I'll just get angrier. But I'll have to say that POS ending is another thing that everyone should avoid.

What were David's last words to weyland? I think weyland said "there is nothing" and David said i know, have a pleasant journey? It just seemed a bit odd

I still don't know what to make of the film after seeing it today.....visually it was beautiful though, I need to see it again

Riddley Scott tried to develop too many characters in too little time creating in a loss of depth. There is a lot of deeper meaning to the themes and actions. Although this movie was long, in order to add depth to all the characters that had some sort of hint of insight, it needed to be longer. Too often did a characters actions showed initiative of depth only for the story to move on to the next scene and kick off another theme. The movie's ambition created a loss of focus and poor pacing.

Below is a slightly longer rant.

Usually when i watch a movie i can have whatever superficial feeling but i dont fully judge a movie until ther has been time to sit in my head and think about how i truly feel about the film. Im so frustrated now with this movie. Most of the actors were very good, the themes were thought provoking (some more subtly than others), i absolutely loved the art style, I always think its brave for a director to make a slow paced big budget sci-fi. That being said, it was so damn unfocused. This movie has been in the works for 5 years and it shows because the director had five years of ideas and themes crammed into 2 hours. When a director does this it reminds me of X-Men 2, how there were a ton of characters and cameos and hardly any of them had enough lime light to show real depth. Ridley shouldve just focused on Noomi Rapace's character and kept the film focused and deep while including elements from all the other characters instead of hopping around with no branching story arcs that meet up in the end. If Ridley was going to show the sections he did with these characters the movie had to be longer so we wouldnt have this half-step.

I didnt know much about this film. I had no idea this was an Aliens tie in up until the final moments. I saw this film for what it was with no knowledge of its universe. Im frustrated because this movie couldve been amazing. The art, the themes, I just couldnt stand the lack of focus and the pacing. I could stand slow movies, i enjoy out of place action at times but this movie felt like it was supposed to be 3 hours long but they smashed the 2nd and 3rd hour into one and cut a lot of important elements. Not only am i left with questions of the future of the story but im also left with questions of the actions of characters in movie.

My understanding of the cave paintings is that yes, they were an invitation. I don't think the Engineers were always hostile to us. I think the paintings were saying that if you, our children, ever develop enough to reach the stars, then we will reward you with the secrets of the origins of humanity - what both Shaw and Weyland are searching for, albeit for different reasons. Makes sense to point us to LV-223, where the life creating goo is being manufactured. Also, might explain why the Engineer was offended by David - he's not biological.

But by the time we reach LV-223, they're mighty pissed off with us and start stockpiling biological weapons to wipe us out.

Man, this movie's backlash is hitting way faster and harder than I expected.

It's funny, I've been pretty negative on this movie since the hype machine started building because I've never really cared for Ridley Scott and Robin Hood was absolute garbage, but I actually didn't hate it.

I can deal with some of the unanswered questions since the film clearly aims for a sequel. Having said that, I do wonder if the reason the film feels so unsatisfying is because they're stretching the material into sequel stories while it should have been a tighter one-off film.

More importantly, I'm annoyed with how they just disposed half of the crew and later on, 5 seemingly prominent characters with stupid and uneventful deaths. I mean FFS, the death of the Captain and his two co-pilot/navigator is fucking stupid. Vickers' death is sooo stupid. Who actually agreed to dispose her like that? What a waste of Theron's presence. On that note, I think Theron should have been the lead character. Rapace just doesn't have as much screen gravitas as Theron. But that's my prerogative. I'm just annoyed to see Ridley hellbent on creating another Ripley where it'd have been better if we, as the audience, have no idea up till the last reel as to who should be the survivor(s) of the film. But just looking at the trailer it's obvious that the focus is on Rapace's character.

I'll buy the bluray twice.

Hahahahahahahaha. I just saw the JESUS theory in the other thread. Fucking hilarious. They should totally make that the officially explanation. Humans and Engineers got along just fine until they created a human-Engineer hybrid to grow closer to us, and then we crucified him! So they decided to wipe us out! Except someone dropped a jar and they fucked themselves up!! LOLOLOL! Best theory ever.

And it's not so much because he made sense as character... There are some potentially interesting ideas here and there, taken separately, but his motivations are quite fuzzy overall. This was ONE of the questions i have left about the characters actions in this film. I could put my own theory together as to why he acted the way he acted but your description sums up the superficial side of his actions.

Why did he infect the Holloway? Why was he going to leave Elisabeth stuck with the alien inside of her? If he was just running orders for Weyland, this doesnt make any sense because Weyland didnt know about the Aliens (or did he? who knows, the film doesnt explain much). David couldve done this out of his own free will. It seems he had somewhat of a vendetta against humans, some sort of jealousy that was exacerbated by people like Holoway.... Thats the reasonable explenation i figured... But then again Weylands said David doesnt have these kinds of feelings so was Weyland lying? Did David develop these feelings of admiration (Lawrence of arabia) and jealousy (towards Holoway and other humans)? Or did he just feel it was propper protocol to turn on your creators? IIRC he told Elisabeth something along the lines of "doesnt everyone want their fathers (creators?) to die?".Maybe he believed that was the case since Vickers wanted her father to die (yet cried when he did -_- ). At times he showed contempt for his creators yet he still followed orders and helped them. Why didnt he or Elisabeth mention the C-Secion of the alien once she ran into Weyland? Yet at the end he helped Elisabeth... Was this to serve humans or did he only help her because she could help him? ARGH! What the hell? Why add all these subtle actions with no concrete resolutions?

And to be a picky bastard, No way in hell would she be able to move the way she was moving after having her lower abdominal muscles severed.

I still hope there is a sequel. I would definitely watch it because this universe still has a lot of potential. Im still intrigued, if i wasnt, i wouldnt be so frustrated with how disappointed i was with this film.

The captain insinuated that the creators went to that planet to manufacture weapons of mass destruction. So why invite humans to this planet? He was offended by David yet he still killed everyone he could and he looked happy to do it. They created us but we cant create David? The fact that you are coming up with such loose assumptions shows how loose this film was. So unfocused, too many subtle actions and themes with no concrete resolutions.

Can't wait for bluray. I appreciate how this movie allows you to ponder deep questions, while still being entertaining. Best scifi thing i've seen in awhile and i'm a highly visual creature so the look of it was amazing for me.
