PS3 Firmware 1.90 (XMB Backgrounds, order game listing, chg vid settings in-game)

I'm just interested and it's nothing major to discuss, but do any of these features overrun the famed 2.0 update? I know wallpapers and a music sampling rate were listed amongst the supposed 2.0. Anything else overlap?

I'm going to switch back to the blowfish, for hilarity's sake.

Hey it would be cool if they added that "animated 2d picture" thingy they made for the Emotion Engine. Anyone remember that? :) Some freaky 2d anime picture being animated somehow, cant remember if it was audio controlled or controlled via a camera.

When you made me think of how that would look, for some reason I saw the Sam Jackson Black Snake Moan face floating around, haunting me, gazing at me as if I'm about to commit some terrible atrocity

Not that I know of. I hope this doesn't mean 2.00 is that far off, though.

ACTUALLY, my big wish is for the PSP to support folders for its games. PS3 not so big a deal, but for the PSP, I have more homebrew...

Why not ? Who confirmed that ?

It sucks that Europeans can play Japanese dvds, but Japanese can't play European dvds.

EDIT: nevermind, misread the quote.

That's a pretty strange thing to have. Is it due to some European regulations?

That's all I want from any firmware update. I don't care about anything else, just give me those lovely blacks and colors for BC titles please.

Well point-x revisions should pretty much be incremental updates on previous builds, a full on x-point update usually represents a much bigger jump than the previous ones.

My guess, 2.0 will see the inclusion of Home or something else on that scale.

Whatever firmware update that launches alongside Home, I hope that the Home icon will be in the XMB regardless if you download the application or not. I think they could gain a couple of % more participants if that icon directly lead to the PS Store download link instead of people having to find it all in the PS Store it self.

I think they'll make an own "category" for Home or put it under the Network category. I would assume that the reason for it to be under Games right now is because it's a beta and therefore must be under that category.

Oh, we already know it will have it's own category in the XMB, the thing is that we don't know if that category will appear regardless (which I hope) or after you install the Home application.

They just shouldn't put Home in the PS store, and do exactly what they did for F@H :o

It sucks that Europeans can play Japanese dvds, but Japanese can't play European dvds.

DVD has regional locks, so does Blue-ray, though a little bit more relaxed (Japan, NA and SE Asia are all in the same zone). If you don't want regional locks, either get a DVD player that has the locks removed, or go with HD-DVD...

Aah, OK. As you said, they ought to make it visible even if you haven't installed it so people will notice it and give it a try, even though they might not know what it is to begin with.

I assume they will add the Home icon with a firmware update. Upon hitting that icon you'll be asked if you want to join the Home community and, if so, download the client.

I think the main XMB icons are too "radical" not to be added with a firmware update (as was the case with Folding@Home IIRC)

YES thank you!!!
while my toshiba supports 1080p/24 it doesn't do the handshaking to work with the 'automatic' option on the ps3
and i think there were a bunch of other tvs that had that problem too

The XMB Background option is nice, but I like the wave so, give my RGB colour control over it, and Intensity setting for day and night changes. I play it mostly at night, and its always black, why not a nice dark blue or red...

Read again:

region 2 European PS3 can play region 2 Japanese dvds
region 2 Japanese PS3 can't play region 2 European dvds

Can someone tell me what it says about 1080p/24? My Samsung TV would love to have an option to force this :)

Hey Blim, how do you know if your TV supports 1080p/24?

Well it's written in the documentation of my TV. Only trouble is that the EDID is wrongly configured and does not enable this mode on the PS3 (not the PS3 fault).
If you want to test it, plug you TV to a PC (via DVI->HDMI) and use powerstrip to force 1920x1080 24hz.

that's the same on my sammy M86. it's fixed in a new firmware available at samsung repair centers but forcing 24hz on the ps3 may save you the hassle of bringing your tv at one of those to perform the upgrade

:)

I don't have a HDTV yet, but i am considering this one, Samsung LNT4065F. Well when i get it i hope it does 1080p/24

being able to eject the disc from the controller is going to be sweet.

Phil Harrison has mentioned that the Home trophy system will go live for the next revision which happens in August. He seems to speak about Home itself though but what is interesting imo is that the Darkness team (Starbreeze) are waiting with their game patch until the August PS3 firmware has been released. Could be interesting..
Wollan, I don't have to play the game once again to unlock home trophies, right?

I have no idea how that works with games that are adding trophies via a patch. I'm guessing it quickly scans your accomplishments info in your savefile and awards you accordingly.

I hope so :D, thanx.

Just pop in a series of 1st party games and larger third party games on day one and maybe you'll get a heap of trophies and items, who knows.

I have a LE52M86, so same issue. And here in France they wouldn't update the firmware no matter what.

thanks to you, now i know that LCDs get firmware updates, lol.

there's nothing to lol about :lol

if you buy a Samsung set you can be sure that you'll need a couple of firmware updates before having almost all the issues sorted out :lol

damn you Samsung, damn you!

i'll have to upgrade the firmware on my set too. one issue is the lack of 24Hz in the EDID infos as Blim said. another problem is that a shitty function called "Movie Plus" keeps enabling itself when you switch the input source on the TV, even if that same feature is reported to be disabled in the settings! (but you can clearly see it's enabled)

basically every time i switch the input (from HDMI to TV or component for example) i have to enable and then disable again that "movie plus" thing in the menu to truly disable it... mhe...

:)

I can't imagine this would work - given the fact that you can download PS3 save games quite easily from the net. You're gonna have to get them live, and online, no doubt, for the trophies.

i have the 40" model. great set but Samsung is really bad when it comes to firmware. they're full of bugs! you'll probably have the same bug i was talking about in my last post.

here in Italy they seems to have no problem with firmware upgrades. and it's covered by warranty also.

once Samsung is done with a new release and the repair center near you gets it they'll do the upgrade. of course if it's reported to fix the problem you're complaining about.

have you tried calling Samsung directly?

:)
