PS5 Pro owners, how silent is your unit? Any noticeable Coil Whine?

I could hear a coil buzz while gaming on PS5 but never the fan, PS5 Pro you can't hear coil whine because the fans so loud
Yeah I now have the second one set up on my desk and I can hear the whine, unlike downstairs on the TV where I could only hear the fan. Definitely noticeable, especially with the Series X on my desk which is barely audible.

One thing I will never trust the internet about...

"Its quiet! Totally silent! I can't hear anything!"

Seriously. Mine's definitely not inaudible, but quiet by my standards. Ofc there's always people enjoying having their ears glued to the damn thing instead of playing games.

My Standard PS5 has been quite audible since I got it. I remember being disappointed when I first played a game on it and I could clearly hear it. I expected it to be much quieter based on what I was hearing. Now the series x? That really was silent, just like people were saying. Like you can literally put your head right next to it and just about hear it! I wish PS5 was that quiet!

It is certainly louder than my launch unit. Is it bad? No, not at all. If I didn't have a desk setup sitting right next to it it'd probably say it was silent.

It is very important to understand that there are two kinds of people:

1) Anal-retentive OCD bastards like myself who happen to have good hearing AND keep their consoles in a quiet room (25dB noise floor);
2) Everyone else who is "normal" and keeps their consoles in noisy living rooms with kitchen appliances nearby (40-45db noise floor).

This thread is really more for us unfortunate group 1 members as we get triggered by noisy consoles we can hear while playing our games during less noisy passages. As an example, if I am playing a Call of Duty game where I want to hear the footsteps of my enemy when there is a lull in the gunfire and explosions, noticing any coil whine buzzing or a fan making a high-pitched whistling sound takes me right out of the action and annoys me. The only two consoles that I have tried that were not intrusive were the XBOX Series X that is literally inaudible from 2 meters and the PS5 CFI-1200 revision which had a fairly silent fan and very low coil whine. My original PS5 launch unit had horrible coil whine and very low fan noise. The 2 PS5 Slims that I tried had no coil whine but one had a very loud NMB fan with infamous UFO whistling noise, while the other had a fairly noisy fan but at least no whistling noise. The loudest consoles I have ever owned were the OG PS3 Fat model and the PS4 Pro. See a pattern here?

I will not be picking up the PS5 Pro if it is confirmed that we will be required to play the infamous fan lottery again OR if it is confirmed that the coil whine noise emanating from the PSU is back. From all the information available so far, it appears that the PS5 Pro has coil whine similar to the original PS5 model which is very annoying and quite audible. It also pulsates because the level of it depends on what the GPU is doing, so it draws even more attention to itself. To make things even worse, it appears that the fan noise level is at a similar level to the PS5 Slim which was significantly louder during gaming than the PS5 original.

This individual on YouTube has bought 2 PS5 Pros and they shipped with different fans, one with Delta the other with Foxconn. His videos seem to confirm what other users sensitive to noise have been saying:

If Sony ever decides to make a more silent console, I will consider picking it up as a long-time Playstation fan. Until then, I am gaming on the Series X.

My PS5 had coil whine but the fan was not noticable.
Now on my PS5 Pro the coil whine is still noticable but a lot better but the fan noise has increased a lot. Like others here, not as bad as PS4 (Pro) but noticable while gaming.

I wonder if the OG PS5 fan is compatible with the PS5 Pro, if so we could just switch them as they are easily accessible.

I wish it were that easy. The real problem is that Sony seems to be simply running their fan at higher RPM on the Slim/Pro chassis to compensate for the smaller heatsink. I was really hoping that all the efficiency gains resulting from the switch to a 4nm process would enable them to run the PS5 Pro fan at lower RPM during gaming, but it does not seem this is the case. Of course, they could always change the fan RPM profile later but Sony is not known for doing this and is famous for being very conservative in terms of operating temperature of their hardware.

It is also fairly unlikely that Sony will eventually issue a second revision to the PS5 Pro hardware as they will probably focus all their efforts on the PS6. So, this is probably as good as it gets - bearable if you get lucky, but far from ideal, especially at this price point.

If the fans are indeed incompatible then we'll have to wait for the Foxconn fan to be available to buy as a single part. I did that with my PS5 and finally had a quiet fan.

Nothing, pretty darn quiet. Elden Ring, Witcher 3, Horizon FW, and can't remember the other. Horizon FW was ridiculous.

Does anyone know if the Witcher 3 is unlocked on the RT?

In terms of coil whine, my Pro is quieter than my launch PS5. It's still audible, but it's a less distracting lower hum/buzz than before (ofc only discernible during loading screens or when there's audio silence). Fan noise wise, from my normal viewing distance 5ft from the couch I never really noticed it over the coil whine. It's no different with the Pro. But it's hard to compare my launch PS5 fan with the Pro's as it's had 4 years of abuse and the fan blades are coated with a layer of dust. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I actually don't mind my PS5 coil whine. It almost feels like it sings to me when I take off my headphones.

Best console for noise had to be the series x
I'm still blown away by that, as an aside. The thing never goes above completely inaudible, even when pushed. Though, the PS5 Pro being a tiny bit louder overall so far makes sense considering its higher draw.

Huh, so looks like I kinda lost the lottery on my Pro. Fan makes a fair bit of audible noise compared to my base PS5 which was whisper quiet.

The more annoying issue is that the fan spins at the same speed regardless if I play SM2 in Pro Fidelity mode or a fucking visual novel like Root Letter. I'm actually dumbfounded by this, lol. I hope they update the fan curve via a firmware update or something.

Oh and I don't have coil whine so there's that at least.

There's no fan lottery man, people are just lying when they say it's silent, it's definitely very much not fucking silent, OG PS5 was silent, Slim is silent, PS5 Pro is not.

My launch PS5 has slight Coil whine which is mostly unnoticeable during regular gameplay audio.

My Pro now is completely Coil Whine free so far, however i feel the fan is faintly noticeable. Much less of an issue than coil whine though.

I'll be doing my own coil whine test when I get mine - for some reason my current PS5 turns into a screeching mess whenever water is on screen in the Tomb Raider 2 remaster. It's weird but an oddly reproducible effect.

Bullshit. Mine is silent. If it wasn't silent then I'd say so.

Everyone here is lying but you??

You have a disc drive?
Can you check if discs seem warm/hot after playing for 20+ minutes? preferably some pro game

Been playing Dragon's Dogma 2 for over an hour. Just ejected the disc and it is warm, but not abnormally so, I don't think.

Something about this all seems oddly familiar. Ah yes, that's right:

I'm inclined to believe that most PS5s emit some sort of buzzing it's just based on location of the system or the hearing aquity of the person listening. It appears to be a simple solution if Sony has their PSUs manufactured with the sound dapenening goop. It can't add that much to the cost of the system and it significantly improves the audio profile of the system. Most likely they'll address it before the end of this year.

If anyone has a truly silent one I'd love to see a YouTube video of it playing a 60fps game! 😁 out of the pages and pages of threads I dont think we have had one video of a truly silent PS5, just a few claims. (Note I dont think people are lying just unable to hear it or have ambient room noise cancelling it out).

You'd think they would at least switch up the methods and language, but alas.

Round 2 here we go I guess.

thanks. I thoguht it's a bit warmer than base but it's purely anecdotal.
BTW all 3 modes support PSSR in dd2 right ?

Dang.....that sucks man. You might want to take it back and exchange it for another if it is that loud.

Your's isn't silent, most people have said the fan is audible, so you have the only silent PS5 Pro in the world? get your ears tested

Oh really?

Quieter than my original PS5 Disc Edition and that was practically silent! I'm currently installing games and it's barely audible!

Sony must have implemented better sound proofing.

Completely silent so far.
Even quieter than my slim.

It's silent. But I'm confused. How can I hear silence, if it's silent.

Mine is silent

Its on now with no other noise in the house and I don't hear it and haven't heard it at all while gaming
