Welp, they just did the presentation, and I have some quick thoughts.
-I do wish it were longer; the PS5 presentation Mark Cerny did in 2020 was great IMO, it doesn't matter if it got technical. That made it feel like a presentation, whereas this one felt more like an infomercial ad. That can have its place, but I wanted something more in-depth. Maybe interviews and a blog post will give more technical details.
-This is probably just me in general, because I watched the stream in 1080p, but some comparisons were hard for me to upfront notice the changes between PS5 and PS5 Pro. Then again, I've felt this way between most multiplat comparisons this gen between PS5 & XSX, but in this case it could also have been down to the choice of some games. Maybe things like advanced RT weren't possible to implement in a game due to its graphics pipeline/engine?
Off the bat I'd say GT7, Rift Apart and Spiderman 2 were the best showcases in noticing the differences upfront
-This baby's in that 3DO tier of pricing and that's where things can get...interesting. Do I personally think the 9-minute presentation was enough to sell the Pro? No. Not at $699. I think some games with more clear-cut improvements on display or maybe a snippet from a new 1P game developed with the Pro's features in mind (or a snippet from an upcoming 3P game of similar) would have made for a better presentation. Or just sticking to GT7/R&C/SM2 and going more in-detail with comparisons since I feel they showed off the boosts the best.
No mention or showing what it could do for 8K TVs or with the PSVR2 & PS Portal in terms of any performance gains there, are also missed points IMO.
I'm sure further details via a blog and/or interviews will highlight the Pro's strengths, and Mark Cerny is always great to listen to, but the man excels at deep technical presentations and the format of this presentation didn't allow for that. So the presentation itself, I'd probably have to give it a
7/10.
Between now and release I hope SIE show off more comparisons that put the Pro's strengths on full display because even with PlayStation's brand name, $699 (that's for the Digital, BTW seems like) is
gonna be a bit of a tough sell, most likely.
