PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Is there a reliable tutorial for removing CFW in order to revert back to OFW? I'm Googling and I'm getting nothing good here.

Nothing for 5.00 M33, at least. It's for 4 and below.

Just run the Sony update, DAX removed the protection a long time ago.

Also, has anyone tested the PSP Store with just M33 or GEN. I'm willing to bet GEN might work since its 5.50, not 5.00 like M33 is.

So it is possible to have firmware on PSP 3000 now?
Any place I can read more about this? Or someone here has more info?
I've just check this thread quickly but I couldn't find anything in the fist post.

Its possible to run it, you just can't install it.

Its called ChickenHEN. I don't use it since I have a 2k (Daxter bundle), but it does work.

I use this for hours daily. More than any game or anything else, it's a must have. Text documents, PDF files and other ebook formats are supported and you can customise the look to suit your lighting conditions, I choose a black background with yellow text for reading in the dark. A must have app.

Alternate Web Browser

Try a different web browser, the official Sony one gets a bit stale. This also includes a high memory hack for PSP Slims, allowing faster browsing and speed increases of over 200% on certain sites.

Ultimate Youtube and 20-30 other video site Viewer

Youtube on PSP without downloading or converting? Google video? A million other sites? Yep and yep. A large list of sites on there too and you can edit the list if you don't fancy the porn sites. Also supports high memory hack on Slim psp's, meaning better quality.

IRSHELL 4.7

The mother of all apps. This can replace or co-exist beside your regular PSP interface. Far too much for me to describe, from running 2 programs at the same time with PSP slim (for example you can run a game and also have an FAQ text file and switch between then!), you can play same screen 2 player PS1 games using 2 PSP;s (holy shit!), custom soundtracks for any game (fuck!) and stream games, music and videos over wifi to your PSP without needing to put things on your memory stick. Here's a list from the official site;

* iR Shell is a true multi-tasking shell which allows you to multi-task between a UMD game/homebrew/Backup ISO and any of the iR Shell built-in functions. On a PSP Slim you can even multi-task between two applications and iR Shell.
* Allow listening to any of your favorite mp3s while playing UMD games, Backups or homebrew apps/games. You can optionally mute the game specific audio channels while playing mp3s. For example, you may want to play your own mp3s and mute the in-game music, but leave the game sound effects intact.
* Display anything that iR Shell can launch on your PC Monitor with the help of RemoteJoy. Now with an increased RemoteJoy framerate up to around 30 FPS while running PS1 games.
* Also supports the TV-OUT function found exclusively on the PSP Slim.
* With the built-in file browser, you can browse files on your Memory Stick, UMD Disc, UMD Backups, your PC hard disks or DVDROM drives via USB or WiFi. You can even open files directly from these devices by a single click, such as viewing PMP Movies, Atrac3s, PMF movies, Backup ISOs, PS1 games, Text files, PDF files, Bitmap Photos, JPEGs, PNG photos, PBP PSP apps, ZIP & RAR archives and so on.
* You can choose to install your PSP homebrew applications & files on your PC hard disk and access them via USB or WiFi on your PSP. This will eventually give your PSP unlimited storage access. With Infrastructure WiFi, you can access these homebrew apps or files on your home PC via WiFi hotspots through Internet.
* Ability to launch and multi-task with PS1 games which were launched from within iR Shell. PS1 game launching is also possible via USB and WiFi by using a Host File System.
* You can play 2-Player PSOne games also against another PSP wirelessly !
* Backup UMD Video ISO support. You can launch Backup UMD Video ISOs straight from the file browser.
* A built-in Universal iR Remote supporting over 2000 devices.
* Additional iR Learning Mode. Just point your remote unit at the PSP and it will learn the iR code. This feature is only available under 5.xx EBOOT and not FW 1.5 mode.
* Allow transfer of files between 2 PSPs via ad-hoc WiFi.
* Ad-hoc WLAN connection to PC also possible
* Advanced file management functions which can be performed on a complete directory tree.
* Take snapshots/screen shots of any homebrews, UMD games, Backups, PS1 games, MP4 movies or UMD Movies.
* Allow redirection of PSP keypad to PC Keyboard or PC Joystick via USB or WiFi. You can, for example, use a Xbox/Xbox360 gamepad with 2 analog sticks to control movement and aim in a FPS. No more awkward control with PSP buttons for aiming.
* CPU clock settings, ranging from 100MHz to 333MHz.
* Context Menu System from which you can choose the action to perform on the selected file for quicker manipulation of files in Directory View
* Auto sleep mode while idle
* Ability to turn on/off the PSP's LED lights for Power, Memory Stick & WiFi. This is good if you are annoyed by the MS LED constantly, for example. The orange charging LED isn't affected.
* Supports Multi-tasking PRX Plugin System. A TXT/HTML reader (MT-Viewer) PRX plugin developed by korDen is included. It allows you to multi-task with TXT and HTML files such as walkthroughs in the background while simultaneously playing a UMD game
* Fully skinnable interface with the ability to have a user supplied font file for each skin.
* Support for Dark_AleX's Leda (“Legacy homebrew loader”) to load some 1.5 kernel homebrew apps and games under 5.xx kernel and EBOOT without needing 1.5 kernel add-on – applies to PSP Phat and PSP Slim
* You can enable or disable the MagicGate Support on the PSP when using non-genuine Memory Stick (such as Photofast microSD to MSPD adapter). By disabling the MagicGate support, you will no longer experience the annoying pause in XMB, such as turning on the PSP, switching off USB mode from XMB, quiting game/homebrew back to XMB, entering XMB video directory, etc. You shouldn't disable the MagicGate Support if you're using a genuine Sony or Sandisk memory stick.
* Comes with an extensive User Guide in familiar HTML format which you can easily browse and navigate.

There is a later iteration of irShell available, 5.1.

Oh, well its better than nothing. So I could run Snes emus if I wanted to, with the help of ChickenHen? Just need to check, so I've understood it. ^^;

I've tried running the Sony update via network. Instead, it tries downloading CFW via network and tells me I'm running the latest firmware.

Boot into your recovery mode (hold R while turning the PSP on) and turn off the custom network update feature. That will allow you to download the update from Sony and not DAX.

You can also just download the update from Sony's website and run it from your memory card.

Haha. I literally JUST did that and then came back into my room to edit my post.

Thanks, though!

Wasn't that an issue with pirated copies that were leaked a month or two before the game was released?

BTW, just stick an empty .txt file in your ISO folder.
I did that and still nothing. Everytime I quit the game it deletes it.

Sorry, I meant PSP\Game folder too.

That's Slim only, plus, I can't see anything my 4.7 can't do, I can already do the advanced multi-tasking in 4.7, so I can't see a reason to change versions. Kinda pointless unless im missing something.

Does PSPTube still function under CFW 5.00-6 M33? I can get to the point where I find a video I want to watch from the Revision3 site, and then it just stops at a blank screen with the time code displayed in the bottom right corner. A google search just came up with tons of stuff on how to get it to work with previous firmwares.

Edit: It works with other sites. I guess I'm just having problems with Rev3.

Can anyone help me out? I'm trying to find the latest and most popular cheating module for hacked firmware psps. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have no idea where to find this sort of thing.

Thank you!

I'm using 5.50 GEN-B and I can't get the SNES9x emulator to work on my PSP Phat, is that emulator just limited to the Slim?

The only emulators I know of that are slim only are the CPS-2 & Neo-Geo emulators due to the extra memory.

Which emulator do you use, as the SNES9xTYL I use just boots me back to the xmb afterward

That is the one I use on my phatty, so I am not sure what is going on with you. If I had my personal PC and PSP with me, I would dig a bit more right now.

uh.......

Is there any way I can use the PS3 controller on the PSP? I like my PSP but holding it for long periods of time leaves indentations in my hands and sore thumbs.

It's not as simple as connecting the USB cable to the PSP huh? :p

Yeah you can use the MotionInJoy drivers to get your DS3 or SIXAXIS set up in windows as a normal joystick then you can use RemoteJoyLite to put the PSP's display on your computer monitor and then also use your PS3 controller with it.

MotionInJoy drivers (BlueTooth and USB): http://www.motioninjoy.com/

wouldn't this create input delay?

OK I been sort of ignoring this thread for a while so its time to jump back in again. Its been a while since I have updated my tutorials or even proofed them on newer hardware & FW.

What are the users of NeoGAF looking for in PSP modding guides at the moment that isn't there at the moment?
New guides with newer better CFW installers or just updated versions of current tutorials?

All suggestions welcome along with the best CFW install programs at the moment and I'll have a look at writing up a new guide then.

So, um, I'm planning on buying (5th time.. lol) a cheap PSP-1000 on ebay, since it's become a necessity for me to have one with RB: Unplugged out now, and Persona/LBP/MGS: Peace Walker/Resident Evil on the way.

I plan on installing CFW as soon as I get it. I've never used it on any of the other PSPs I've had, so I'm completely lost. Will I still need a pandora battery or have they gotten around that now?

I read the whole OP of this thread but it's too confusing and doesn't seem current -_-

Depends on what firmware the PSP has on it when you get it. Chances are it'll be above 2.8, in which case you'll need a specific game or a Pandora battery to get custom firmware installed.

So this business with CFW users not being able to buy store content...does it affect people buying off of the PS3 store and transferring to the PSP? I must know, Badman is out this week and can't be missed.

Not inherently. MGS runs on 5.00M33. FF7 requires 5.50 or greater, though so it won't work without going official.

What has happened to my once lustrous CFW scene? :(

Actually, it's my understanding that PSN is blocking the version.txt workaround for PSN access, not CFW in general. I've read that 5.50 GEN-B users are not being blocked from PSN. Obviously, PS3 and PC access is still fine, so if you don't want to upgrade to a non-M33 CFW, you still have proxy platforms available.

The version.txt trick still works for getting around games that block older FWs, this includes newer retail games like Class of Heroes (which requires 5.03 or higher) and downloads like demos and Final Fantasy 7. I can play both on my 5.00 M33-6 PSP.

This one in particular I'm looking at has 5.02 according to the seller. If I get the battery, can I definitely mod this one?

I still find that restricting PS Store access is stupid. Sony is ENCOURAGING piracy by doing that. I mean, hmm...go official and pay for FFVII or get FFVII free and keep CFW. That is the decision all CFW users are facing right now. Most will choose the first. If we could access PS Store, I'm sure more would buy FFVII.

You don't need a battery if its 5.02. All you need is to upgrade it to 5.03(DON'T GO HIGHER!!! network update will force you to 5.51 so don't use it!). Then download ChickHEN and Hellcat's Recovery Flasher 1.60 and make sure you have MS Pro Duo. There is a tut in the first post iirc.

Whoops, looks like I'm wrong about that then. Perhaps I did the version.txt trick wrong.

You must have. Dark-Alex made 5.00 M33 as future-proof as possible. Only his PSN FW checking block was defeated. Everything else works great. Either a new M33 will hit eventually, or a new PSN access work-around will be developed, or 5.50 GEN will become a more viable CFW (it's not yet, for me). But until then, we still have other ways of accessing PSN. Just not directly.
