PSP Custom Firmware Thread

One quick question:

Can I use one of these on my PSP?

Because they are really much cheaper than the normal Memory Stick Pro Duo, and i'd like to buy a 8Gb MC now that everything is going to be launched in DD.

8Gb is the max that the PSP 2000 supports right?

Nope, but you can use something like this. I'm not sure about the maximum file size, but just speaking for myself personally, I have a 4GB and have no issues with space.

Has anyone been able to run crazyc's DOSBox eboot with some Apogee games?
When I saw dosbox was "available" on the PSP I was like wahzahaierhezriagh

But after that brief moment of joy, I realized it's a pain in the ass to configure and get some stuff to actually play well.
I'd love to get my floppy disk of Hocus Pocus on the PSP...

I didn't try any apogee stuff, but I did try and play XCOM UFO Defense. Worked almost perfectly, just a few framerate issues, but with a turn based game that's not a huge deal.

No you can't use a MicroSD on your PSP, you'll need a Duo adaptor and even then the PSP might have trouble reading it. Also 8gb is not the max, I have 1x16GB Duo and it's working great. Sandisk makes dual MicroSD adaptors for Duo cards (you can put 2 mircoSD cards in a Duo shell) and it seems to work though not always perfect. A friend is mine has 2x 16gb MicroSD cards and games he's ripped to the cards tend to freeze at times.

I use this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001I0T92Q/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Along with 2 SanDisk 8GB microSDHC Cards. IIRC the PSP recognizes them as 15 GB in total. I'd check but my PSP isn't with me at the moment.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
so a 16gb card reads as snappy as a 2gb or 4gb?

i use a 4gb mainly, and sometimes i swear that it's a little slower than my 2gb (all sandisks, by the way). i always wondered how a huge card would handle.

Question

I want to update my PSP CFW for the first time, uh, a really long time. But I don't know if my CFW already has the "Just connect and it will update" feature and don't want to risk accidentally downloading a Sony update.

I'm currently on 3.90 M33-2 according to the System Information. Safe to use the built-in updater?

3.80 m33 and up have network update.

Where do I go to get that update instead of the Sony one?
assuming you already have a custom firmware that has it, you just do a network update.

you can check the recovery menu settings to see that it's on m33 network updates and not sony ones, but it should be unless someone changed it, since m33 is default.

Huh, so, problem.

I tried to update through the network update and it took me to a black screen that looked like a DOS prompt, asking me to download a 25MB file. So I did. After the file finishes downloading, it booted me back to the main menu and the system information still says 3.90. I go to network update again, goes to the black screen again, says "Unpacking...done" and then "Verifying 500.pbp...Incorrect file" and then heads back to the main menu again.

I'm not disputing that it is the default... but the first time I used network update I got Sony firmware and had to use a Pandora battery to go back to CFW. I don't recall which version it was but I am absolutely sure that I didn't mess with network settings before I erroneously updated to the wrong firmware.

I would urge anyone using network update for the first time to first check in the recovery menu settings and make sure it's set to m33 before doing an update. Just to be safe. That's been my experience.

well, i was like 99% sure it was enabled by default, so to be 100% sure, i checked the 3.80 m33 readme, and it is.

- Network update from dark-alex.org page. By default is enabled.
You can turn it off in recovery (when off, network update will download sony updates as usual).

however, you're right, JUST IN CASE, anyone who doesn't have a pandora should definitely confirm that they have the correct setting,

So I'm on custom firmware 5.00 M33 and since yesterday I can't access the PSN store, it asks me to update my firmware.

Anyone have any idea why?

I'm having a problem. I have RB:U saved on my MSD, and whenever I quit the game it deletes my "GAME" folder. The "ISO" folder remains fine, and there is nothing in the "GAME" folder so I don't have to worry about anything getting deleted, but the games in the "ISO" folder won't show up on the PSP without that "GAME" folder intact. This is really annoying because I have to connect my PSP to my MAc every time I quit the game, to recreate a "GAME" folder.

Wasn't that an issue with pirated copies that were leaked a month or two before the game was released?

BTW, just stick an empty .txt file in your ISO folder.

Hmm, seems like Sony's wised up a bit, and is now blocking CFW users from PSN.
At the very least, my 5.51 version.txt trick is now longer doing the trick.

We'll see what comes of this...

My version is not pirated. I ripped the ISO off a UMD that I bought.

Where can I get a empty .txt file?

:lol

Just go to the folder you want the .txt in, click File > New > Text Document. There you go. (sorry if you were joking)

So I guess it is possible for ChickHEN to not work at all, eh? Nearing 200 tries on my 1000 and no such luck so far.
Yes, I'm on 5.03.
Yes, h.bin is in the root.

Keep trying man, it took me over 2 hours. It's all about the timing I guess. I rapidly tapped X as soon as I highlighted the folder, I did it on the Phat btw. After 2 hours I didn't think it would work, but it worked soon afterwards.

Which is the funny thing. I'm going back from a PSP that I had hacked before (updated because I didn't care anymore until I realized I can't take screenshots now, noooo!) I swapped O to my confirm and that change stuck. Huh.

When you said "Jamming" I realized that I was actually browsing to the image. So I deleted all the other images, jammed the button fast and hey, work!

When I try to use the PC store it asks me to link my psp to usb before it lets me download and then it tells me to update my firmware.

This sucks, I can't purchase anything from the store!

Wait, so uh, what. I can't play games I downloaded off PSN. What in the fuck? I thought this thing was supposed to fake it as the newest firmware?
Nevermind, version.txt solved all issues.

version.txt solves that. Search for it in this thread.

Does it though? They seem to have recently gotten wise to version.txt, at least as far as PSP/PSN-direct connections go, as Mejilan pointed out on the last page. Do you know that it's different if you browse and buy from PC?

I downloaded FF7 this weekend from the PC client. So, unless that happened in the last few days, the pc client works.

I *just* downloaded a PSP demo from PC to PSP so that still works. Still, it's real nice of Sony to try and block people from actually BUYING stuff. Guess filthy pirates should just be filthy pirates and download the software somewhere else.

It's times like these I could easily revert back to OFW. What's the point in having CFW if I'm unable to conveniently download games or demos from the store?

I'm going to scour the OP to find information on how to do that.

The only major reason why I went to CFW was so that I could save all my games onto the memory stick. Now that Sony will start releasing everything on PSN I won't care about CFW anymore.

That's like saying that MS shouldn't ban modded consoles from Live because you know, maybe they just want a chance to buy stuff online. People that use unauthorized mods and software know the deal - there are no guarantees it'll work or work well.

well, modded 360's just play bootleg games, cfw'd psp's do a lot of things other than just play duped games.

On that note, can people list some of their favorite CFW apps and uses other than emulation and converting UMD to memory stick? I asked earlier about RSS readers, but got zero responses.

That would be a great idea. I recently got a PSP with CFW already installed and I would like to know some other apps and uses.

Bookr

I use this for hours daily. More than any game or anything else, it's a must have. Text documents, PDF files and other ebook formats are supported and you can customise the look to suit your lighting conditions, I choose a black background with yellow text for reading in the dark. A must have app.

Alternate Web Browser

Try a different web browser, the official Sony one gets a bit stale. This also includes a high memory hack for PSP Slims, allowing faster browsing and speed increases of over 200% on certain sites.

Ultimate Youtube and 20-30 other video site Viewer

Youtube on PSP without downloading or converting? Google video? A million other sites? Yep and yep. A large list of sites on there too and you can edit the list if you don't fancy the porn sites. Also supports high memory hack on Slim psp's, meaning better quality.

IRSHELL 4.7

The mother of all apps. This can replace or co-exist beside your regular PSP interface. Far too much for me to describe, from running 2 programs at the same time with PSP slim (for example you can run a game and also have an FAQ text file and switch between then!), you can play same screen 2 player PS1 games using 2 PSP;s (holy shit!), custom soundtracks for any game (fuck!) and stream games, music and videos over wifi to your PSP without needing to put things on your memory stick. Here's a list from the official site;

* iR Shell is a true multi-tasking shell which allows you to multi-task between a UMD game/homebrew/Backup ISO and any of the iR Shell built-in functions. On a PSP Slim you can even multi-task between two applications and iR Shell.
* Allow listening to any of your favorite mp3s while playing UMD games, Backups or homebrew apps/games. You can optionally mute the game specific audio channels while playing mp3s. For example, you may want to play your own mp3s and mute the in-game music, but leave the game sound effects intact.
* Display anything that iR Shell can launch on your PC Monitor with the help of RemoteJoy. Now with an increased RemoteJoy framerate up to around 30 FPS while running PS1 games.
* Also supports the TV-OUT function found exclusively on the PSP Slim.
* With the built-in file browser, you can browse files on your Memory Stick, UMD Disc, UMD Backups, your PC hard disks or DVDROM drives via USB or WiFi. You can even open files directly from these devices by a single click, such as viewing PMP Movies, Atrac3s, PMF movies, Backup ISOs, PS1 games, Text files, PDF files, Bitmap Photos, JPEGs, PNG photos, PBP PSP apps, ZIP & RAR archives and so on.
* You can choose to install your PSP homebrew applications & files on your PC hard disk and access them via USB or WiFi on your PSP. This will eventually give your PSP unlimited storage access. With Infrastructure WiFi, you can access these homebrew apps or files on your home PC via WiFi hotspots through Internet.
* Ability to launch and multi-task with PS1 games which were launched from within iR Shell. PS1 game launching is also possible via USB and WiFi by using a Host File System.
* You can play 2-Player PSOne games also against another PSP wirelessly !
* Backup UMD Video ISO support. You can launch Backup UMD Video ISOs straight from the file browser.
* A built-in Universal iR Remote supporting over 2000 devices.
* Additional iR Learning Mode. Just point your remote unit at the PSP and it will learn the iR code. This feature is only available under 5.xx EBOOT and not FW 1.5 mode.
* Allow transfer of files between 2 PSPs via ad-hoc WiFi.
* Ad-hoc WLAN connection to PC also possible
* Advanced file management functions which can be performed on a complete directory tree.
* Take snapshots/screen shots of any homebrews, UMD games, Backups, PS1 games, MP4 movies or UMD Movies.
* Allow redirection of PSP keypad to PC Keyboard or PC Joystick via USB or WiFi. You can, for example, use a Xbox/Xbox360 gamepad with 2 analog sticks to control movement and aim in a FPS. No more awkward control with PSP buttons for aiming.
* CPU clock settings, ranging from 100MHz to 333MHz.
* Context Menu System from which you can choose the action to perform on the selected file for quicker manipulation of files in Directory View
* Auto sleep mode while idle
* Ability to turn on/off the PSP's LED lights for Power, Memory Stick & WiFi. This is good if you are annoyed by the MS LED constantly, for example. The orange charging LED isn't affected.
* Supports Multi-tasking PRX Plugin System. A TXT/HTML reader (MT-Viewer) PRX plugin developed by korDen is included. It allows you to multi-task with TXT and HTML files such as walkthroughs in the background while simultaneously playing a UMD game
* Fully skinnable interface with the ability to have a user supplied font file for each skin.
* Support for Dark_AleX's Leda (“Legacy homebrew loader”) to load some 1.5 kernel homebrew apps and games under 5.xx kernel and EBOOT without needing 1.5 kernel add-on – applies to PSP Phat and PSP Slim
* You can enable or disable the MagicGate Support on the PSP when using non-genuine Memory Stick (such as Photofast microSD to MSPD adapter). By disabling the MagicGate support, you will no longer experience the annoying pause in XMB, such as turning on the PSP, switching off USB mode from XMB, quiting game/homebrew back to XMB, entering XMB video directory, etc. You shouldn't disable the MagicGate Support if you're using a genuine Sony or Sandisk memory stick.
* Comes with an extensive User Guide in familiar HTML format which you can easily browse and navigate.

Is there a reliable tutorial for removing CFW in order to revert back to OFW? I'm Googling and I'm getting nothing good here.

Nothing for 5.00 M33, at least. It's for 4 and below.
