PSP Custom Firmware Thread

RocketDarkness said:
It does appear I need 5.50...but how do I tell which PSP I have? It says the 2000 may have two different motherboards, and installing the wrong one = brick... X.x

EDIT: Oh, I found the system settings. It has 5.02 GEN-A (Full). Does this help figure out which motherboard this one has? I'm googling around to try and find the answer, but it can't hurt to ask experts.

Took a bit of finangling, but I got it working.

Motherboard type : Slim (02g)
Motherboard model: TA-088 v1/v2
PSP Version : Slim v2.0/2.1

Custom firmware 5.50 Gen-A says to only install it on v1 and v2, so this is the correct version for me. Is there any reason I can't go from the current firmware, 5.02, straight to 5.50?

And as far as actually installing it, it looks like I simply copy the UPDATE folder into the GAME directory of the memory stick, and simply execute it? Is that all?

I have two questions:

1. I asked this in the PSN update thread with no answers, but if I buy PSP games off PSN (Wild Arms XF, in this case), will it be able to run on my PSP with CFW okay? Or will I have to do some sort of technical tinkering? I wouldn't trust myself enough for such a thing...

2. Is there some sort of screen/video grabber tool out there? That'd be pretty awesome.

Re: 2. I'm not sure if this works on GEN-A/B but on M33-6 you can use a program called RemoteJoyLite to output the PSP screen on your PC. It comes with a built in video recorder and snapshot tool. It's quite a hassle to set up (Not all the download packages out there include the driver you need) but it's really worth it afterwards (You can set up a joypad with it too, really neat).

Here's the GAF thread on it: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=334119

And Re:1, Depending on the FW the game requires (Any game upto FW 5.51 I think) use this:

Thanks for the help, that RemoteJoyLite is working great so far :D I can't seem to get the video capture to work at all for some reason, but the picture grabbing is fine and it's really cool to play on my screen. I'll have to set it all up to be truly badass now :D

Edit: Probably should've just gone to .19 to begin with, have video working as well now :D

Does anyone know the transfer rate on this memory card? I just filled my 1 gig last night so I'd like to get this hueg one so I won't have to worry about filling it/swapping cards ever again.

And could someone tell me the latest CFW ver and if it works on the launch PSPs? People are talking about 5.00 and GEN A... I have no idea what is the most current.

I have the same card, but 1gb, and it's fairly fast. Although I haven't used anyother so I can't compare really..

Latest CFW is 5.50GEN-B.

It'll work on a phat? Also, can anyone recommend some staple apps? I've only messed around with emulators so far but I would like to have a better music/video player with visualizations etc... As long as it works on the phat, AFAIK some things can only work with the additional ram from the newer models.

Yeah, I have GEN-B on my Phatty and it's perfect.

As for Apps, I've been out of that for years, haven't bothered with those since dev's stopped updating to the newer FW versions, so I'm not the man to ask about that..

After a Google search, I found this:

I've used the screenshot plugin in this bundle since 3.71 M33 and it worked fine in 5.50 GEN-B when I tested it.

Thanks for the info, but in the end there was no real need. Old-ass screenshot plugin I have seems to work after the update. Now, on to review SoulCalibur and Dissidia.

Sorry for shitting up the thread all the time, but I have one last question. Do you know if all the old emulators will still be compatible with GEN-B? I'm mostly concerned with CPS2PSP (cps1+2), SNES9XTYL(snes), MVSPSP(neo-geo), gpSP(gba), RIN GB/GBC(gbc) and NESTER J(nes). If it's assumed that all older apps/emus will work then thats a fine answer too :D I don't know any good sites for psp homebrew, so a link to a page with all the emus will probably give me all the info I need too.

I drove 2 hours and paid a guy $20 to get CFW a few years back and have been hesitant to upgrade it myself since. I would like to see what the latest cfw is all about, and I hear that newer games need the newer cfw to run. I want to get Dissidia (first PSP game I've been interested in a long time) so I think it's time I have to upgrade.

This was THE site back in the day for me to download homebrew, I think you can put the emulators in the 1.5 folder and run it through like that. I know they do work still, I just forgot where they went on the PSP, haha. I'm sure a read me is included to tell you.

Yeah, it's so simple now, all you basically do is plug in your PSP, navigate to the certain folder and drop the file in, then run it on the XMB. Takes literally 2 minutes to upgrade. :D

Forgive the off-topic question but I don't see a general hardware repair thread and figured the folks modifying their PSPs might have an answer:

I have a launch-era NTSC PSP and the analog nub is dying. Did Sony change the analog stick part across PSP revisions or will any replacement stick assembly fit the 1st gen PSP? Having trouble finding a clear answer online.

Thanks in advance for any help!

What do you mean by dying? I had major sensitivity issues with the analog on my 1000, to the point that it was unusable, but these issues continued after I replaced the analog assembly.

I'm trying to covert my Policenauts ISOs into an Eboot, but everytime I hit "Make" on the RS-GUI PopStation it tells me that the "popstation_md.exe has stopped working" and then exits out. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

If your unit already has custom firmware then you are fine. If you had an unflashable MB then you wouldn't have CFW on it already. The TA-088V3 motherboard (last iteration of PSP-2000) is the unflashable one.

The direction range from straight up to straight left stops responding at random and goes dead; turning the power off and restarting the system after it sits for a while sometimes fixes it but it soon stops responding again.

I have a little battery problem.
I've bought a dual purpose battery (normal and pandora with a button to change mode).
Used it to put CFW on my PSP, using it as second battery, no problem.
Problem now is, even when fully charged, either in normal or pandora mode, the PSP won't start. If someone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated, because I don't have a clue what to do to fix it.

Second try, just in case.

Try a program called IceTea (google IceTea 1.3), that worked for me.

Strangely, when I use RemoteJoyLite, once I'm finished with it my games tend to freeze and the PSP shuts itself off upon the next time I save :-/ That's kind of annoying.

5.50 GEN-A Build 4: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1745 (Install FIRST! Important!)
5.50 GEN-B update: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1764 (only AFTER installing above successfully!)

- Trying GEN-B update without GEN-A will brick your PSP
- Disable any custom themes first (revert to default)
- Disable any active plugins before updating
- Put folder containing update files in GAME folder
- Have AC charger plugged in when you run, for safety
- Enjoy latest CFW

So, wait - if my hardware is appropriate I can just download these files and run them from memory stick to install custom firmware? :O

Is there a proper way to verify the correct hardware for installation? I have a PSP-2001, one of the release day slim models.

Thanks.

You'll have to check your motherboard, which isn't hard to do. If it's release day slim, then you should honestly be set to go. :D Just please follow a tutorial because honestly one thing wrong and you're out of luck.

Do you have a link to quality tutorials on the procedure?

I don't want to leap without looking.

Running off of Custom Firmware
If you actually still have emulators that require the 1.5 kernel, then those emulators are horribly obsolete. Update 'em.

There are none for CPS1+2 and MVS as far as I can tell, those are the ones I want. Now my savestates will be worthless too, can you just tell me the simplest way to get back to gen-a?

Or back to 5.00 M33-6, I have no use for PSN so I think this is the best version for me. I only have my one PSP and battery, so I'm not sure how to downgrade. Someone please help meh.

I don't know much about GEN CFWs, since I'm sticking with 5.00 M33-6 for now.
But have you tried just running the 5.00 M33-6 installer?
Worst case scenario, you should be able to use Hellcat's Recovery Flasher 1.6 to wipe your PSP and reinitialize it to 5.00 M33-6.

Seriously, almost no homebrew today actually requires 1.50 kernel support. It's very much a thing of the past. Especially for emulators. Most emulators were ported to later kernels if for no other reason than to utilize the Slim's extra RAM...

Didn't you say you already had a custom firmware installed? If not, you'll either need a Pandora battery or use a tutorial to run the 5.03 OFW TIFF exploit to load ChickHEN, which can in turn run something called Recovery Flasher. There are tutorials floating around.

Post your exact firmware version from your system information.

Ok, I looked around for emus and found out that CPS/MVS emus don't work with GEN B, but they do with GEN A and all prior firmwares... so using this tutorial I downgraded back to 5.00 m33-4 and there it shall stay! I only hope Dissidia works on this because I just went through hell getting this thing to behave the way I like.

still I am curious why the OP method wouldnt work for me when it apparently works for others...

There's something wrong with the Policenauts AT3 file if you're using the one from popsdb - RS-GUI won't let the conversion go through, whereas PSX2PSP somehow forces it through and you end up with a buggered eboot. Take it out and it works absolutely fine.

Just a quick question, i was thinking about buying my girlfriends cousins psp slim and was wondering if it was possible to put CFW on it as i have only done it with a fat psp. Its a 2000 and has firmware 2.90, im not sure about the board number so i would have to check about that. If you can what way would i have to do it, pandora or just by using an installer?

Quoted in the hope that it's not ignored again.

Also, what's the difference between A and B? What's B added?

can't be 2.90, slim came with minimum 3.60, maybe you mean 3.90?

if so, then it should be CFWable.

@RocketDarkness: 5.50GEN-B was released only as an update from 5.50GEN-A.

Changelog:

  • Bug fix: the VSH menu can now be disabled
  • Pressing Select can start the recovery, bring up the VSH recovery menu, or do nothing at all (for those who wish to use Remote Play between their PSP and PS3)
  • Update via Network (taken from M33)
  • Evangelion Jo (as UMD and ISO) can be launched & played now
  • Pandora (converting the battery to/from the Pandora-state) and Shutdown Device options added to the VSH menu
  • Flash1 format option adds a check that prevents a flash1 format if enabled
  • Access [remains open] to the PlayStation Store and Remote Play continues working

LOL must be mistaken, just had a quick look since my GF seemed interested in buying it from him and i wanted it to be able to hook it up to my tv to play :D

What method would i have to use to get cfw on it? I have never used a pandora bat. before so im not too sure exactly how it works.
