PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Running off of Custom Firmware
Actually, what REALLY sucks is that if we were to opt for the PSN version of Persona, we would be able to run it through NPDecryptor and sterilize it of its DRM and quite possibly defeat the 5.55 protection as well. Possibly.

But I want the UMD and bonus goodies, so eff that.

Because I care.

Keep in mind, there's no way to do multi-disc eboots with this old programme. Hopefully someone else steps up to the plate soon.
Oh jeez, I just remembered that I'd promised a decent program to do this a couple of months back. Stupid exams. Sorry.

If I remember correctly, I'd gotten to the point of getting PopstationMD to compile for the command line. All I need to do is make a GUI wrapper for it. I won't make any unrealistic promises this time, but I'll get back to work on it soon.

It's alright, I mean you have a life and things don't always go the way you want. In the end I'm able to convert 99.9% of my library using the existing PrometeusPro method. It's a bit clunky, but it works.

Though, as an incentive, whenever you do get this programme done, I'll let you pick a tag. ;)

Alright, It's been awhile since I've done this. But I'm curious, how would I go about hacking a 4.05 psp-1000? Does the GTA/Lumines trick work or would I have to use a Pandora? I forgot what the cutoff was.

You can update to OFW 5.03 then use the TIFF exploit to ChickHEN > Hellcat recovery flasher 1.6 > flash CFW. With this method you don't even need a particular game. Guides and files for this are easy to find.

Pandora is easiest. Pandora will work no matter what you have on your PSP.

So glad Orochi 2 is 5.03 instead of 5.55. I was prepared to "down"grade to OFW to play it!

When I did the custom theme i put it on flash0 and didn't realize to back up the folders first. Is there a way to get the default fonts? some of the games are messed up because of that.

Um, what FW are you on? If you use 5.00-6 M33, you can always re-flash the PSP with Hellcat's Recovery Flasher or have someone send you the needed files.

In that case, I'm not sure. Do 5.00-6 M33 and Gen-B use the same fonts? If so, I can send you the files from my PSP's flash0, I guess.

Can anyone shed some light on what cso compression actually does? Will it increase load times or lower the resolution or anything silly like that?

Well back in the day when cso equaled bad performance, it was like taking a piece of paper & crush it into a ball & then try reading it after unfolding it :lol Not sure about how it works today or why it's not considered as bad as it was before.

Psp 2000 slim.
Gen-B.

My internet browser doesn't want to load up. when I click it just freeze and my psp reset. any reason it's doing that? is it because of the custom flash0 theme? i need a way to remove and put back the default.

EDIT:

How do I reflash my psp? to make it go back to after when i just installed the CFW?

EDIT: Nevermind. Figured it out ;D

Increases load times, doesn't lower and resolution from what I know of.

I've been thinking about getting one of those. I've seen them on Amazon for all kinds of different prices. Some as low as $4 and some as high as $20. Is there any difference in them or are certain sellers just trying to make more money?

I just picked up my Australian Dissidia Collector's Edition and it won't run on my PSP, which has the latest M33 custom firmware. Apparently, it requires 5.55 (since that update is on the disc).

Can anyone tell me if there's any way I can actually play the thing without upgrading to OFW? I've heard "patching with a US eboot" works but I have no idea how to even do that. =/

I had this problem too. I bought the Collector's Edition but found out I couldn't play the game. I tried several things to get it to work (changing settings, removing plugins), even using a ripkit by an Italian called kal8. I tried to rip my ISO and use his ripkit but it always gave me an error that my ISO was too big. I removed update data, dummy data but was always over the limit. On the suggestion of patching the ISO with the US EBOOTS from Mejilan, we went through it together and found out how to solve it.

1. Rip your Dissidia ISO to your computer
2. Download UMDGen 4.00, run and open your newly created ISO
3. When it loads up the ISO, navigate to /PSP_GAME/SYSDIR/
4. Download* the NTSC version of the EBOOT.BIN and BOOT.BIN.
5. Drag and drop the two extract files into the SYSDIR/ directory in UMDGen.
6. Hit 'Save' and select Uncompressed ISO. Move into your ms:/ISO/ folder and play!

The NA version of Dissidia only requires 5.50, thus there's not encryption on those files. Injecting them into the ISO of the PAL version of Dissidia bypasses the 5.55 OFW requirement.

This is the same method I used and it works perfectly.

*I have no idea if I can paste the link to download them as this seems like rather a grey area, so if you have a friend with the NA copy, ask them to follow those instructions but rather than replacing EBOOT.BIN and BOOT.BIN, right-click them and select 'Extract Selected'. Then get them sent to you.

Coincidentally, to get the US version of Soulcalibur Broken Destiny working, you need to inject the EU EBOOT.BIN and BOOT.BIN files into the ISO.

for those interested, gen released 5.50 gen b2 today. It doesn't fix the 5.55 games, but it fixes homebrew stuff.
It seems they're on the cusp of a convoluted version numbering system that would make M33 blush.

What should i be doing differently if i'm going to install CFW?
I don't get your question, are you just trying to install cfw? Upgrade to 5.00 M33 then you can go to M33-6 or if you want to go to GEN you can just go to GEN A then GEN B.

I want to finally upgrade from 3.90, but I'm reading that I can't just go straight to 5.00 M33-6. I have to do something with Sony's official 5.00 firmware too. And some sites say I have to go to 4.01 M33 first too...? I'm also having problems actually finding 5.00 M33-6 to download. Wifi system update isn't working, and I can't find a download link on Dark Alex's website.

I'm sure this has been covered to death in this thread already, but I can't find a straight answer on Google.

EDIT: Found the right files. So do I just need to rename the 5.00 OFW as 500.pbp and slap it into the same folder as the 5.00 M33-6 eboot; or do I need to upgrade through some previous CFWs first?

trying to install CFW. I'm following the one from OP actually. the one with Cat50 + Pandora. It worked fine for psp 2000 that i have. but when I tried to insert the Pandora battery into the phat the system turns on by itself and has a black screen. Trying to see actually what i'm doing wrong.

It's common that it will turn on right away when the battery is inserted. With the 'magic' memstick inserted, just be ready to hold down "L" to activate the recovery mode when it powers on.

My TV has died so while it's in repair dusted off my old PSP.

It's got the latest CFW as mentioned in the OP, M33-6 but I can't access the PSP store to get some demos.

Not possible anymore?

Yeah, you'll need to upgrade to the 5.50 GEN-A (and then GEN-B) CFW versions to get access to the store again. It's pretty painless if you're already on M33-6, I did it just the other day with no trouble.

Thank you sir. Who made these new FW revisions?

One last question, any reason NOT to upgrade to these Team Gen CFWs?
Would I be able to go back?

Not really. Their latest update fixed homebrew stuff so I assume most important homebrew stuff should be working now. And if you need to access psn store or play games that require 5.50 then you should probably upgrade to gen 5.50. If you want to go back to DA fw, I believe you need pandora battery.

It could be that the trigger button to enter recovery was configured to something besides the L button.

Try re-creating your magic memory stick, because it should definitely work on all phats so maybe that's your issue.

I recommend PSP Pandora Deluxe. Get it here
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1543
(Edit, better download link)

You just need to add the OFW 5.0 file to the "eboot" directory after installing, and name it "500.PBP".

With that file loaded and other options at default you should end up with a stick that will boot DC8 when holding L, and then be able to install M33 5.0. After that it's a piece of cake to update to GEN-A 5.50 revision 4> GEN-B 5.50.

Cool... if you do update it's real easy but just remember to revert to the Original theme and disable all plugins (if any) before doing so.

I updated my PSP Phat 1000 from M33-6 to 5.50 Gen-A then -B but cannot seem to access the recovery menu to adjust settings. It's the select button while in the XMB isn't it? What is the shortcut on startup?

Restart and hold R to go into recovery mode. you have to enable the VSH Menu there first before you can use it in the XMB.

First, ignore my stupidity; I rebooted my PSP 2 times and for whatever reason, holding R for recovery menu works on the 3rd boot.

Well I think the PSP 1000 I messed around with is going in the shitter.

All of a sudden the analog function is screwing up as well as the Down button on the D-Pad. The analog goes all the way to the left, and the down button on the Pad seems to be pressed at random, so I'm having phantom movement without me even doing anything.

I have disassembled this PSP dozens of times, checked all of the connections and cleaned the analog stick from inside out, even switched out the analog stick for another with the same result every time.

Am I fucked?

Hey guys, i have a question that's probably have been answered before (searched but i didn't find the answer):
Can i use any battery if i want to make a pandora battery using the tutorial in the OP, or does it have to be a phat battery? I remember that a long time ago you could make a pandora by using only phat battery.

it can be a slim battery but you have to hard mod it.

you cant use the pandora battery maker program (whatever the name is) with a slim battery

also some 3rd party dont work

OK, I had no lessons today, meaning a chance to work on some UI designs for Popstation OS X (as I'm calling it). This will probably be how v1.0 will look:
PopstationOSXPreview.png

A quick run through:
The app launches with just the 'Drag Playstation disc or disk image here' section.
Upon a disc (image) being dragged into the window, the app expands to show the options above. The game name and ID are automatically added (like Prometeus).
The EBOOT can be customised by clicking the red icons and selecting the appropriate files.
The 5 drop downs at the bottom are for individual disc compression. (Obviously only one field will be shown if the game has one disc, two if two discs, etc.).

I'd really appreciate some feedback, as it's kind of hard to fit so many options into a clean interface. Just stuff like whether it looks too cluttered, or if you can think of a better way of doing things.

Sorry for straying off topic, as this isn't directly related to custom firmware. Can't think of anywhere else to put this aside from a new thread, which would be a bit of self promoting overkill :)

Looking awesome. I would like to make one request, though I have no idea how hard it would be to implement: would you be able to make it possible to preview .pmf animations and .at3 sound files? Half the time I'm just making guesses when I download image packs for my PSX games.

Give or take a week or so for shipping from Play-Asia.

If this 5.55/6.00 CFW silliness isn't figured out by then it's off to OFW I go.

Doesn't work. Currently, any game that requires 5.55 will not work on the current CFW we have now..

Persona PSP is pretty much going to break the deal for me. If it's not resolved by then, I'll probably end up jumping the CFW ship.

Glad you like it :)

From a quick browse around the web, it seems that playing .pmf animations should be OK, as it's just a container format. However, .at3 seems to be a protected Sony format, so I probably won't be able to preview that. Of course, if I find a way I'll add it :)

That looks fantastic. We've been missing an OS X version of Popstation since Prometeus dropped off the face of the earth.

On the subject of AT3, there are a number of codec packs out there with it, but none for OS X that I know of and no open source implementations. I don't think it's really used outside embedded Sony systems these days now that MiniDisc is gone and it's been completely buried by other lossy compression formats.
