PSP Custom Firmware Thread

how did you make Persona run in 5.50 GEN-B?

You need to patch the ISO you got from ripping retail UMD disc. The process is somewhat complicated but it works for other games as well, for those of us who want to keep CFW and play newest releases.

Using Yoshihiro's game decrypter. A guide has been posted a few pages ago, it's quite simple. Just get the iso from your legit Persona UMD, open it with umdgen, save the filelist.txt, then extract the eboot.pbp and place it in the root of your memory stick, run the decrypter on your PSP to create a new folder on your PSP with the decrypted eboot.pbp
Go back to your iso on UMDgen, delete the eboot.pdp you extracted earlier from the iso and add the new one your PSP just created, then import the filelist.txt and click yes when prompted.
Finally, save everything as iso and load it on your 5.50genB (doesn't work on M33, I had to upgrade to gen to make it work).

Tried to switch from M33 to GEN-A and it looks like I bricked my PSP. Just ordered the toolkit so I can fix it. :( Obviously, I had no idea what I was going. :lol

I'm on Gen yay !

It looks/feels exactly the same as M33, old games and apps are running fine too thankfully. Cwcheat works which is awesome, the only thing i dont like are the two "make battery" options in the vsh menu, i'm afraid i might accidentally click one of them and it'll do something bad to my psp >_>

now to wrap my head around this decryptor tool .

^ oh god, thank goodness i didn't read that before updating lol, i'd have been discouraged never to do so otherwise.

Anyone? I've googled like crazy but can't find an answer, if there is one. :(
On my recently updated 5.50 gen B2, i'm seeing the exact same vsh as M33, cpu clocking options and all.

well, i gotta say Persona isn't working for me after patching the iso i built. after launching the game i get a black screen.

i already updated my PSP to GEN-B (Full) and i patched the iso twice but i still get the same black screen

Okay, helping a friend upgrade. Is on vanilla 5.00 m33, not m33-6. Going straight to Gen-A from here good idea or bad idea?

According to random guides on the internet, 3.52 M33-3 onwards is fine.

List your recovery menu options. Be sure to select Sony -NO UMD- driver, and not M33 one. Try these:

Configuration >
UMD Mod (currently : Sony NP9660 -NO UMD-)
Use VSHMenu (Currently) : VSHMENU
Use version.txt (Currently) : Enabled

Advanced > Advanced Configuration :
Plain modules in UMD/ISO : Disabled
Execute BOOT.BIN in UMD/ISO : Disabled

@chandoog: where can I get that slick wallpaper?

Man getting GT to work at first was quite the task but it's actually pretty easy once you know what your doing. Thanks Meiljan.

That sucks man. I found the upgrade to be ridiculously simple so I'm not sure what instructions you followed or how you managed to brick. You bought the datel pandora battery tool? I got two of those just lying around, one is unopened so if anyone is looking for one let me know.

I'd love the second one. Sending you a PM.

I have a 3000, and was trying to downgrade. I can get the ChickHEN mode to run, but when I run the 5.50 GenA installer it just shuts down my PSP. Could it be that my 3000 isn't downgradeable, or that I have a wrong version of ChickHEN?

I'm installing GEN-A so can't help you right now, but from what I know you shouldn't have any problem running popsloader if it's fitted to GEN releases. Just hold R while launching any PSX game and check if you have a list of FW to choose from.

EDIT: On GEN-B2 and installing popsloader, it has all the PRX files for different versions, so no worries. Get the whole package and unzip to the root directory of your MS.

EDIT2: Tested Innocent Sin on GEN-B2 again, pops list displayed correctly, all the pops from 5.00M33-6 are included.

Yep, I found a package and it works. I can pretend to continue to play Policenauts!

Funny, I screwed up the update because I didn't know you were supposed to rename the eboot thing to 550. Thankfully I have an old Pandora lying around.

Time to rip my copy of Persona. Yippie.

3000 cannot install CFW. Don't even TRY to do it or you'll brick when ti touches the flash0. Use CFWEnabler or the way to run 5.03 Gen-A in Hen to get the CFW stuff going.

well it seems that for some games, you must export the file list of the original game with umdgen (file-> file list-> export), patch the game as explained in the tutorial, then with iso patched, forcing the list of file designating one that you exported (file-> file list-> import)

i did that and i got Persona PSP to run in my slim x)

Motorstorm doesn't work for me. :(
I've done all the steps and patched the iso, I noticed that size of the original iso is 850mb but when I patch and saved it the size reduced to 770mb. I've also checked the recovery menu and everything is correct.

I remember that I've changed the version.txt for running the MGS: PW demo, is it something related?

If you go to psp-hacks.com, they have the Decrypter and the Update to 5.50 Gen B-2.

I cannot post a link cause it is blocked here at my school (I am a 6th Grade Teacher :lol )

Anyways, it is right on the first page. I used the 5.50 Gen B-2 Update right on their front page. I didn't have to mess with Official Sony FW or anything, they have it all set up for you.

All you have to do it drag and drop the 3 different Update Folders to your GAME folder on your PSP, all of the files are right there within the folders. Then you update them in order and you are running Gen B 2.

It was very very very simple. I see people wondering where to put the Official FW File and stuff, the files on psp-hacks.com were all set up for you.

They also have the Decrypter. The Decrypter is what Decrypts the Eboot.bin file in the ISO's so they will play on 5.50 Gen B -2 (someone asked what it was).

Just go to psp-hacks, it was the easiest I found to upgrade. YOU DO NEED Custom Firmware 3.30 or higher to update this way, but I assume most of you are running CFW M33 anyways.

OK looks like the feedback is good enough for me to finally bite the bullet and upgrade to GEN.:D

I'm still uncertain on whether my current pops plugin will work on 5.50GEN-B2 though.

I was about to post at how GEN had killed my psp (nothing would boot) but I was a prat and hadn't realised it basically wipes all your settings so Id not changed to NO-UMD :lol

For the Gen-Bs do you need the sony ofw to install?
Just use this. The included readme is really informative and simple.

By the way, so far so good with 5.50Gen! I still have to try a PS1 game but I'm sure there won't be any problem as everything else works like a charm (plugins, games, videos etc).

Well I've tried literally a dozen times to get Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 to work, what a waste of money it was, I'll wait till a 6.0 release I guess.

There are several easy installers online, that will do the entire conversion from M33 to GEN-B automatically. That's what i did. If you want, i will PM you the one i used.

To be fair, even if it ran, I'm pretty sure you'd feel the same.

I tried Persona and I got a black screen, the memory card light flashes every 2sec for about 1minute and then just stops. Shame :(

is it the xgen updater?

Here, this is what I did upgrading from 5.00 M33-6 to Gen B2

1. Went to QJ.net and downloaded 5.50 Gen A.
2. Copied folder into my psp/games folder
3. Ran update
4. Went back to QJ.net and downloaded 5.50 Gen B
5. Copied folder into psp/game folder
6. Ran update

Gen B2 is optional.

Make sure you update to 5.50 Gen A before 5.50 Gen B or your psp will brick.

Not sure if this will help, but reading gbatemp, they suggest turning off all plugins.

Can I delete all the crap off my mem stick? I must have over a gb of files from previous firmware/CFW.

...Yes? Why you didn't before is beyond me. You don't need the files after you're done doing whatever you were doing. :lol

Also GT runs for me, but won't autosave or even save at all. It keeps saying it failed. A bad conversion, maybe? Anyone?
