PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Scanned this page and saw nothing about it, thought it would be bigger news considering thats pretty much the only reason people want a new CFW.

The last 4-5 pages of this thread were dedicated to just that app. Hell, I even managed to whip up a quick tutorial (with Aeana's help) the night it hit!

Asking again for the person above, anyone get Pixeljunk Monsters yet and tried to see if it works on 5.50 GEN-B?
I have been waiting for people to reply to that question .....:lol

Just tried my hand at the decryptor thingy.
It's easy enough. It seems weird that the decryptor isn't just a program on the pc.
Any specific reason for that?

I haven't touched my PSP in awhile and I'm on firmware 5.00 M33-3 on my fat PSP. Can I update to 5.50 GEN-B from this or do I have to go through the other updates first?

I just updated my 5.00 M33-6 yesterday.. first installed 5.50 GEN-A, then GEN-B and GEN-B2. Easy process.

i think it needs the PSP for that dectypted eboot.. i.e. It needs to speak PSP'ese and be translated for decryption, in order to boot in that environment and it wouldn't get it on PC unless emulated, and then you'd have another "PSP" that would need just as many CFW updates:lol .

just a guess.. that said, i see no reason why backups couldn't just contain the decrypted eboot from the start... would save some time since everyone is likely using GEN for these... but once you have it decrypted, and saved that way, it's pretty plug and play...

I hate to ask this, but it was a pain for me to install M33 in the first place way back in the day (and completely worth it!). I need to switch to Gen B to play Gran Turismo. However, I don't want to lose the ability to play my PSOne game with POPS, among other things. How will I know what works with M33 and not with Gen B? Is there a list?

Secondly, I'm on the latest M33 using a PSP 2000. Is there a painless way to switch directly to Gen B? A link would be great. I found some info here and there in this thread, but I don't want to brick my PSP because 1 small factor differed from my setup to what someone else was describing.

Many thanks.

I know it's been asked, but I'll ask again... does PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe work right now on GEN?

... I would assume that it would since all you would need it to do would be able to access the PSN, then it should run. Correct?

POPS should work fine. A few pages back Mejilan posted a list of all the stuff you need to download to upgrade. Just grab all that stuff, rename the official 5.50 eboot to 550.PBP, and drop it in the same directory as GEN-A, run it and then run the rest of the updates. It's all very simple.

So I'm updating to 5.50 Gen B2, but unsure if it worked :lol My system information now shows 5.50 GEN-B (Full) is that what B2 should show?

Same question; Thexder Neo looks tasty.

I only recently got a PSP-2000 (with CFW installed) so I don't think I want to risk changing the FW, especially as I'm not really interested in many upcoming games.

I found a store today that had a used God of War 2000 model. All of those can have custom firmware installed, can't they? I'm thinking of just getting it instead of waiting for someone to crack the Go. It might never happen.

Yes all God of War PSP Editions can be installed with a CFW. I got one last year and I had no problem installing it. Recently updated it to 5.50-GEN B2

Oh and I can buy games via the PSN network and play them on 5.50 GEN-B2 right? I'm thinking of grabbing Suidoken/Wild Arms 1/2 but want to make sure I can use them with my version (because I couldn't get the Half Minuet Hero demo to work under 5.50 CFW :( )

Im going to give this a test run today to see if I can buy PSN games, because I really want Monsters Deluxe. If it doesn't work then screw it I'll just update, but I'm pretty sure they'll work on GEN-B based on what I've been reading.

has anyone had any emulation compatibility issues with GEN firmware?

I'm thinking I might just spring for a PSP Go when they're cheaper or a used 2000 to use official firmware on.

there's sum kinda "version.txt" method u can search for in this thread... it allowed me to play Badman and Strikers 1945 Plus.

but I believe the method has become obsolete for newer games? I wanna play Thexder too...

Lyte Edge

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
All the emulators I use work fine on GEN-B.

Upgrade to GEN-B. Thexder runs perfectly fine on that.

Let me know if you get it working (PS1 games mostly!!!) I'm probably going to buy and download them to my PS3 now, but I want to get them working on my psp :lol

this whole cfw thing has gotten kind of confusing for me, since i haven't been following any of it. and reading the last few pages hasn't helped much since i still have such an old firmware: 3.52 m33. i'm on a psp-1000. sorry for asking such a potentially stupid and obvious question, but how do i go about updating to the newest cfw?

You're in luck since I just did this for my wife's PSP about a month ago except she was on 3.51 m33. Fortunately you're on 3.52 which takes out a step that I had to go through. All yo need to do is upgrade to 3.70 m33 and then you can go to 5.00 m33 and from there you can update to 5.50 GEN-A then to GEN-B and finally GEN-B2 to be completely up to the latest. GEN-B and GEN-B2 are just updates and not firmware flashes though so it's really only three firmware flashes for you.

I finally updated to 5.50GEN-B from M33-6 5.00. Where is the menu to change options with GEN firmware? In M33 you just held home, but here I can't find it...

If I buy GTPSP from the PSN store, how do you play it on a PSP with CFW? It requires 6.00 OFW.
It's a eboot.pbp right? And you can't decrypt a eboot with the Yoshihiro's decryptor. So, is there a way to play it if you have 5.50 GEN-B?

thanks for the info... but i won't be able to access the psn store with the newest cfw, right? i really don't care for homebrew or emulation anymore. is it safe to just upgrade to the official firmware? or is there something special i need to do?

Can anyone simplify the process I need to take to get my 5.50GENB2 psp on the PSN store?

You'll want to modify the version.txt file located in the flash0 of the PSP. To do this:

Go into the Advanced portion of the boot configuration and toggle "USB flash0".

Connect the PSP to the PC and navigate to /vsh/etc

Open version.txt

Change all of the numbers that say 550 or 5.50 to 610 or 6.10, respectively

Save and exit, and disconnect the PSP

Go into the Configuration menu and turn on the version.txt hack

Done! Now you should be able to connect the PSP to the PC and download games from the PSN store using MediaGo.

I was just browsing the PSN store yesterday. Unless something has changed, it still works.

Undead Knight sort of hard freeze and then restart when it gets to the first save.

5.50 Gen-B2 here.

Same here. I don't think it was a real full game just some buggy code that got out.

oh. then why are people in here talking about a workaround to be able to log into the psn store - and even after that, ONLY through your pc, not even on the psp itself? am i missing something?

Maybe I'm missing something then =) I was just browsing it when they did the update to see what PSP games they made available. I didn't buy anything but I was able to browse.

It is safe
but you really shouldn't do that.
Just use the official updater.

So umm, is there no menu for GEN firmware? How do you change between UMD and NO UMD load, 222mhz & 333mhz, etc...It doesn't help that their readme is in French!

1) Do a hard power down
2) Power on while holding R to enter recovery menu
3) Enter Configuration
4) Enable VSH menu

hmmm, actually it doesn't work. i went to network update and it downloaded the newest official firmware, but i can't install it. i get an error message every time: "game can't be loaded (DADADADA)".

Network update doesn't point to Sony's servers if I recall. Download the official firmware on a PC and then copy it over. I would advise against going to OFW over CFW, but that's your choice.

Older M33 CFWs innately blocked OFW installations.
There may be a work around, but I don't know it.
Upgrade to a new CFW that stripped that feature out.

oh alright. i'll do it that way then.

and i don't really see the point in using cfw, since i'm not interested in homebrew, emulation or piracy. what exactly is the benefit in that case? i had just kind of installed it as a novelty.

I mainly use it to play my games without requiring the UMD. Nice not having to lug your UMDs around. That and being able to play my PSOne games on the go.

You need to be at least a 3.52 M33-3 or higher in order to update to a modern CFW (such as 5.50 Gen). Get yourself patched up to 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4, from there you can directly upgrade to either 5.00 M33 or 5.50 Gen, with little effort.

If you plan to stick with CFW 5.00 M33, patch it up to 5.00 M33-6. I'll warn you, this CFW is obsolete. You will not be able to access PSN.
If you plan to stick with CFW 5.50 Gen, patch it up to 5.50 Gen-B2. You'll be able to access PSN with a minimum of fuss.

Either way, you need to be on some kind of modern CFW (which 3.52 M33 is not) in order to trade back up to an OFW. You'll be able to install OFW 6.10 directly over either 5.00 M33 or 5.50 Gen without too much trouble.
