wonder if we'll ever get 6.2 CFW

we haven't gotten a new one in six months now :-s

Team Gen has no interest in finishing one currently. They said that they were able to get something running, but the 6.xx kernel is different enough that most homebrew would break and everything would need to be re-compiled for the new homebrew. They weighed the pros and cons and ultimately decided that the few features that 6.xx brought to the table weren't important enough to force such a change within the homebrew community. They mentioned that it was similar to the 1.5x kernel -> 3.xx kernel shift from a few years ago. That, at the time, was necessary. Honestly, if they'd just release an updated POPSLoader plugin which supports POPS 6.00-6.20, I'd be pleased as punch. It should be fairly trivial since those have already been successfully decrypted. An updated POPS with 5.50 Gen-D3's current ability to decrypt newer UMD games on-the-fly would combine for near 100% current game compatibility.

Got an e-mail with a code for the ModNation Racers PSP Demo, which prompted me to finally update my PSP from M33-6 to GEN-D3, and the PSNF*cker plugin did allow me to access PSN. But still can't play the demo. I was planning on getting it on PS3 anyway, so not a big deal, but kind of would've liked to try it out.

It's my understanding that PSNFucker (now PSNLover in more recent versions, btw) will not work with downloads that need to be authenticated. I still use my PS3 for that. I also got a ModNation Racers PSP demo voucher which I redeemed and downloaded to my PS3 last night. I've not yet transferred it over to my PSP, but I imagine I won't have any problems with that.

Yesterday I upgraded my PSP from 5.00 M33 to 5.50 GEN-D3, mostly because I wanted to try the PSN Monster Hunter demo.

Well, not only the demo did *not* work (but now I don't care anymore, there's a bigger issue to solve) but my good-old Lumines2 savegame stopped being recognized by the game!

With a quick google search I found many hints that could lead to the firmware upgrade being responsible for the savegame appearing "corrupted" (actually, it seems fine on the XMB, it just won't load from the ingame menu).

So question is: did this *really* happen because of the just-upgraded custom firmware? If so, is it possible to somehow "fix" the savegame and make it readable again? Could a downgrade to previous firmware (5.00 M33) solve the problem without needing to mess with the savegame?

There's a homebrew app called Savegame Deemer which will probably restore "corrupt" saves that result from upgrading to a newer CFW from an older one.

Oh Mejilan. I could kiss you! I've got a broken FFT save that might just come back to life with this!

Could this be the reason Monster Hunter demo won't load? It gives me an error code when I try to run it (of course it's different from the warning which prompted me to upgrade to at least 5.50 to be able to execute it)

Wow, that's nice to hear, to say the least!
I will try *before* downgrading... but *after* I make a copy of my precious savegame. :D Don't really want to waste 70+ hours spent on Lumines2 as of now. :)

Thanks.

I've not tried downloading goodies from the PSP PSN that require authentication, but I believe that the error you'll get would be during the installation process after the downloading, not at run time.

Haha, funny. I just popped in FFT for the first time in like a year and realized that my save was corrupted. I was so early in the game, that I decided to just start over instead of trying Savegame Deemer, but I'm pretty sure that the homebrew app will fix the problem if you'd rather not start over!

saves are NOT actually corrupted. it's only the D3 version that sees them as corrupted.
if you go back to D2 they'll magically work again. that's why i'm stuck on D2, there's a way to rebuild saves to make them work on D3 but it's really too much work to do on each file to be worth the bother.

@Turrican3:
go back to GEN D2 or M33 and the saves will work again.

:)

So D2 is really the last good version? (I have D2 but I haven't really tried it that much yet. Personna works with D2, right?)

D3 is better in just about every sense.
You should not need to downgrade to regain access to your saves.
See my last few posts earlier today for details.

So I've redeemed a Modnation Racers demo code that Sony sent me, downloaded it to my PSP but it's not starting. Any ideas? I'm on 5.50Gen-D3.

Nothing you can do yet. I received the code also, but haven't tried it seeing as I knew it wouldn't work.

If it's a legit download from PSN, and activated (such as through MediaGo or a PS3), you SHOULD be able to use the license info that MedioGo/PS3 copy over to your PSP together with the demo in conjunction with the homebrew app NPDecryptor to strip out the DRM, convert the eboot to an uncompressed ISO, and run it off the PSP.

I've done it before with relatively recent PSN downloads and demos, so I'd imagine that it would work with ModNation Racers as well, though admittedly I have yet to test it with this particular demo.

I can look into it later tonight, however.

OK I tried what you suggested Mejilan but I'm getting this error upon running NPDecryptor:

npeg open = -2141910783
error
Terminated press a key to exit

Looks like we're out of luck for the time being.

Tried that, but unsuccessfully.
Saving in unencrypted format did work fine, but since I do not know the inner structure of Lumines2 savegames, editing them wasn't actually feasable.
(there seemed to be no functions available to "fix" corrupt savegames, anyway)

To keep the story short: I think I almost bricked my PSP (god bless the M33 recovery menu) but somehow finally managed to restore CFW 3.90 M33 and now Lumines2 savegames are correctly recognized again. ^_^

Which is perfectly fine for me since nowadays my PSP is more like a Lumines2 player instead of a fully functional portable console. :D

Got a question - if I have a PSP running custom firmware and everything, are there new games which come out and force me to update my firmware before I can play them? Is it going to affect my ability to play retail games?

Has anyone gotten Breath of Fire IV to work? I converted it, but it won't play on any of the Pops versions that I've tried. It keeps locking up at the Playstation screen.

Could anyone tell me when PSPs started shipping with higher than 5.03 firmware?

I was looking at some old bundles, a Monster Hunter Freedom Unite bundle, or... a Petz bundle.
It sounds like they released around June 2009, but I don't know how up to date the hardware is when released.

Thanks!

I got my PSP 3000 in May of 2009, and it came with firmware 4.90 or something like that. I think you are correct maybe around July-August they started having 5.03+ on them.

I know the Rockband bundle had 5.03 on them, my friend got one late 2009.

Thanks for that, those bundles are about £108 here in HMV, reduced because they're old stock I think.
I might be wrong but I think at that time the 3000s were thought to be unhackable, so there might not have been a rush to put 5.5 on them.

I'm in need of some quick help, and was hoping someone could help me.

I'm heading off to Paris next week, and noticed that there is a French version of Talkman on the US PSN. I already have the Talkman mic from previously purchasing the import Japanese version, but I was wondering that if I download this software via PSN it will work on the most recent CFW. I apologize for not doing more research myself, but I'm getting married tomorrow morning, and I'm under an extreme time crunch.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Has anyone had any luck getting the recently released Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe UMD to successfully decrypt and play using 5.50 GEN D-3? I've been stuck on 5.00 M33-6 for the longest time and recently upgraded to 5.50 GEN D-3 to play the game but I have been getting the 80020148 - "This Game Could Not Be Started" error.

Even disabling the game plug-in in the "Advanced" menu of recovery mode didn't help as I think that only applies to the PSN released version and not the UMD (UMD version has 6.2 f/w).

I am on 5.5 GEN-D3 and wish to downgrade to legit firmware so I can trade in my 2000. I'm having a hell of a time doing so. The system thinks my FW is 9.90 when I try to update it.

I don't have my PSP on me at the moment and I own a 3000, but I believe if you go into the VSH and into the recovery menu, there is an option I believe in Registry Hacks to reboot into official firmware.

Hurry!

Does this mean PSP Go is finally cracked?

I know what I'm getting when I get the cash now... :lol

Edit: Oshit--it is.

What's to stop the community from finding someway to spoof the firmware for PSPGo owners if Sony pulls the .iso off the PSN store to patch it? (Fat chance, as most of the store stuff is straight iso dumps. Rockstar had to patch the LCS after the firmware outbreak for it through a new UMD press. I can't see Ubisoft going back to Essentials to patch this and I doubt they'd let Sony drop Essentials from the store...)

The problem with these exploits and the PSP Go is that Sony can quickly patch the games to stop them from happening. I bet this will be addressed by tomorrow. If they had a way to get CFW up and running on Gos right NOW from this exploit then I'd run out and buy one ASAP.

BTW, there was a similar exploit found in Mercury. It was patched pretty quickly.

I ended up getting a PSP 3003 with Monster Hunter 2nd G for £95 from the GAME website, not a bad deal.
However, the Chickhen exploit is sooo unreliable I've not managed to get it to work yet, and have tried the one which is supposedly modded to be more reliable too. It freezes the system every single time.

Does anyone have any tips to get this working? Otherwise it looks like I'll be turning my back on this generation of custom firmware. gg Sony, I might be visiting your store soon.

Also, the screen doesn't seem much brighter than my 1000, and the interlacing is ugly. There's also a weird misshapen border near the edges of the screen where the interlacing is slightly more apparent, I guess it's better than dead pixels.

Update: Tried Chickhen on a 32MB Sony stick and it works every time, Seems the problem was my 4GB SanDisk, even after formatting it.

Is 5.50 GEN-D3 currently the best cfw?

Also is it possible to unhack my psp without bricking it?

Yes, and yes. But why would you go back to OFW after CFW?

I'm just tired of the cfw's. I wanna play FF8 and RE2 without worrying about loopholes and shit and doing this and doing that in order to make it work. I wanted a hacked psp so I could play psx games on it anyways and now Sony's offering that via psn.

But do Sony offer every PSX game for the PSP? Nope. CFW does, as long as you have the original disc to rip yourself.

What's the most recent firmware that can still be hacked? I'm at 1.5 now, and want to update so I can finally get the new features, but still want the possibility of putting on CFW in the future.

IE, 2.00 can be hacked. We're at 6.00 now right? So what's the most recent hackable firmware, 5.xx?

B.K.

If you have a PSP with 1.5, then you must have a 1000 series model, right? I believe that all versions of firmware can be hacked on 1000 if you have a Pandora battery and magic memory stick. Just make the battery and memory stick now and you should be safe.

You do not need to hack 1.5, it can run anything. The most recent CFW is 5.50 GEN D3, however alot of people myself included stick with 5.00 M33-6 as it was the last CFW made by Dark Alex.

What I'm saying is that I have no idea how to install CFW. I've looked for easy to follow tutorials but I'm still confused. So for the time being, I want to update to an OFW, but still leave the possibility of CFW open.

And yes my PSP is a 1000 model from launch.

Download the CFW from Site that has CFW for download, Read the Readme that comes with it. Because you are on 1.5 that is it, if this is too complex for you then if you update you are in for a world of pain and confusion.

However since you have a Fat psp you always have the option of buying a pandora battery should you fuck up.

Himuro said:
No freezing? At all? Even when you draw/card? I call bs. :(

Same problems here. I played 40 hours of FF8 and couldn't continue.

I am also tired with the sluggyness of CFW as I can hardly play any new games (until the right firmware appears). The freezing in rpgs gets tiresome. Looking forward for the Falcom games, but they have to wait whenever they release knowing the current speed of CFW.

Himuro said:
Does cfw let me play FF8 without the game crashing or corrupting my save file 15 hours in? Nope.

If you have FF8 for PS1 you can just load it to the PSP and there's 1 or 2 GAME ID's that allow you to play it without the freezes/lagginess/slowdown.

Don't know if I'm allowed to post the stable game id though.

I have mine set up to use a version of M33 off the memory stick and OFW on the flash memory. It wasn't that hard to set up and works great.

And it works :) Only thing that sucks is that since it's 5.00, I can't connect to PSN. And that means I can't use remote play over the internet.

There is a plugin to bypass that however I would not risk using your PS3 account with it just incase (make a dummy account). You can still also use remote play locally.
