PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Ugh, already having problems. I can't get my ISO of Rock Band Unplugged to run. As soon as I boot it the screen turns black, and then the system shuts off. Anyone know what's going on?

Edit: Hmm, my Patapon ISO runs fine though. Weird.

Why does mine say 6.31 PRO? Isn't it HEN?

6.20 HEN is the name of the original exploit released by Total Noob - 6.3X PRO is just the name that this quick (and somewhat dirty) port to 6.31 and 6.35 is going by.

And yes there are a few incompatible titles - depends what ISO loader is in use I guess. The OpenIdea loader is said to have better compatibility than the Prometheus one, but requires plugins to work (the PRO firmware doesn't support these). Things will get easier once Total Noob releases the proper 6.35 HEN, or whenever the 6.20 downgrader is released, or if those PSP keys are put to use, or....

So many possibilities on the scene, very exciting!

Is gpsp 3.2 the latest GBA emulator that will run on 6.31 PRO? I've tried 3.4 but it just goes to a black screen with a blue rectangle.

3.2 works fine for me.

Anyone know if there is a way to take screengrabs of games with HBL? I'd be running the games I'd want screengrabs from simply via the XMB as well.

I just found a lot of Best Buy gift cards, so I think I'm going to pick up a Go tomorrow assuming Best Buy will price match Radio Shack. Any reason not to do this at this point?

Nope, best handheld of all time.

I think I'll finally go buy a PSPgo.

Does this mean that homebrew and UMD games are now playable on the device? I have a 3000 as well but I've always admired the go, if i could have one for $100 or less. And that seems to be the case now.

What's the battery life like on the Go? I just remembered the battery is internal and can't be changed. That sorta spoils me on the regular PSP on long trips.

games work only for about 3 or 4 hours :(

Hrm, that's even worse than just a regular PSP on the normal battery. I'm starting to second guess this now... I also realized I'd have to shell out money for a screen protector, a case, a video cable, and from the sounds of it, maybe even a cradle. Sucks that none of my old PSP accessories work on it.

in which folder on the psp do i add gpsp 3.2?

GAME folder.

Heh, now I just gotta decide if I want white or black. I've got a black 1000, and a white 2000. So I've had one of each....

White. I'm buying an extra PSPgo because it's so gorgeous. (I have black)

If a game is on your memory card do you still need to do the data install. KH or Peace walker for example. Thanks

It's optional. In PW's case, installing the game adds in voice acting to the interview tapes. I guess installing it probably decompresses some data.

No idea about KH as I don't have it, but I bought Peace Walker from the PS Store and the advice I got was to do the smaller 300mb install, as this installs the voices for radio messages (without it, you just get text). The full 800mb install -- which is there to reduce loading times -- is a waste of time if you already have the game on your memory stick.

Thanks for the answer. Much appreciated.

Can you backup your UMDs from a 2000 with 6.31 using HEN? I want to copy my UMDs so I can get them on PSP Go.
Aka play KH on a Go!

I'm a bit confused. *scratches head*

I'm wondering the exact same thing (asked this same question in the KH on the PSPgo thread). Hopefully someone knowledgeable can answer.

This is my first post on NeoGAF and I started looking into PSP stuff a few days ago as I bought Ys Seven and Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Anyway, to run the necessary plug-in that rips the UMD in-drive to an ISO on memory stick, I believe you need TN HEN 6.20.

I have my ripped ISO of Metal Gear Ac!d

Crack an egg of knowledge on me, Gaf, you're my only hope.

Unless you're talking about some technical problem, the general answer is make a folder called ISO (or isos, forgot, but try iso first), put iso in, boot iso loader, then play your game.

If the Hen VSH Menu is anything like my PSP-1000 with 5.50 Gen-B then it should be possible. When you press select in the XMB to open up the VSH menu, you should have the option “USB Device.” You will want to change that from “Memory Stick” to “UMD Disc.” When you connect your PSP via usb to your PC, you should see an ISO file instead of the root PSP files. Rip that to your PC and then copy it over to your GO with Prometheus and it should work fine. Hope that works.

I tried Prometheus and it seems to send me back to HEN. Sorry, been out of the scene since, well, picking up my Go.
I think you have your terminology a bit wrong if you think it's sending you back to HEN.

HEN is just a homebrew enabler (hence Homebrew ENabler) on the normal XMB. HBL (Half Byte Loader) is the screen I think you're talking aobut. The new launcher with text based folder readout on a background image.

What you want to do is launch HEN from HBL, it will take you back to your XMB, and from there you can launch Prometheus ISO loader, or Cavestory or whatever other homebrew you should have on your mem stick, right from the XMB.

Gotcha. I'll give it a shot. Thanks, boss.

EDIT: Works like a charm. Thanks again.

Welcome to GAF, great first post! :D

That's a little annoying, but hopefully this craziness with the keys will fix this?

I just bought a Go to upgrade from my PSP-1000, and not entirely sure on what I have to do. I know to install 6.2 TN-B HEN, but:

1. Which version of Prometheus do I need to install?

2. Can I only play games that have FW 6.2 or earlier?

3. My PSP-1000 is still on the last M33 CFW. Can I rip my UMDs using M33, or do I need to upgrade the CFW on that one too for the isos to be readable by the Go? Thanks.

At most, it answers my first question.

2. Looks like most current titles require no later than 6.2 at the moment so you should be fine until an official unofficial is released.
3. I ripped my Lumines ISO years ago and it works fine. Certainly ripped on an older firmware.

4. Take what I say with a grain of salt as my responses are assumptions based on evidence of my experience. The pros here should provide an incontrovertible response.

Man, I just couldn't pull the trigger today on a Go. I kept thinking about it, and the shorter battery life, having to buy all new accessories, and buying a system that I already own two other versions of at the end of the life cycle made me not do it today. I still have one day to mull it over.... but I'm starting to think I won't do it....

OK, installing Hen and Prometheus was a breeze, and my old iso files work perfectly so far. The Go is a dream compared to my old 1000.

How many notches above the lowest brightness is default? Sorry for the dumb question, OCD mania going on.
I always considered the highest one the default. I don't know if there is an 'official' default.

So I got this working today, but since this is my first time dealing with this kind of stuff on the PSP I have a question: Any time I want to play one of my backups, do I always have to go through the process of using the Patapon 2 demo exploit to run HBL and then run HEN 6.20 from there? This might just be wishful thinking, but is there any way to have HEN running as soon as my PSP starts up instead of having to go through that process every time I want to play one of my backups?

I apologize if I come off as ignorant and/or stupid, again this is the first time I've tried this sort of thing and I didn't see this particular question mentioned anywhere else I looked.

Don't turn off your PSP, put it to sleep instead.
