PSP Custom Firmware Thread

It's possible I guess. I used Simple Popstation for the conversion (Although I seem to be using 2.2 and it's moved on a bit going from the link you've provided). I'll get the new version and try it with that, see if it makes any difference. :)

It would it try with the newer versions, KEYS.BIN is no longer required.
Another good program is RS-GUI. Supports lots of image formats.

Okay, so I followed the great instructions and had a bit of a snag. When I inserted the tool (after charging it and everything) the PSP turned on but the display was blank. I went ahead and hit square anyway the MS light flickered for a bit then shut down. I figured I was on the right track so I went ahead and did the next step (hit X after inserting the tool).

So now I put the normal battery in and turned it on. Um, how do I know if it worked??

I've finally tracked down a pandora battery. Can you guys gives give me a brief summary of which custom firmware level to upgrade too?

I'm currently at 3.72 on a PSP slim. I wanna play GOW when I buy it next week, and I like the idea of the network updates, but I'd also like to be able to play my PSX games that I rip to PC as well as some of the older emulators.

So which version should I throw on my PSP slim?

does it boot normally? check your system specs (it's all the way to the left on the XMB, a few down).

I have 3.90 M33-2 at the moment and I can do everything you're looking to do (In theory).

Go to system information (System Settings menu), it'll tell you the firmware level.

Please elaborate on the "In theory." Also i won't be affected by the memory card slow down, I've read about somewhere on the internet?? I've got a legit 4GB Sangate Pro Duo so I'm hoping the .iso's will run fine? Makes carrying my multiple games on the subway possible :D

Sounds like it worked anyway and it still boots so I would say your on 3.71 M33-2 now. As said above check in Setttings.

There is a patch for the memory card slowdown called fatsmod patch. I posted it a page or 2 back.

Cool, thanks. I did what navanman's guide suggested and went to 3.71 m33-4.

Couple quick questions

1. Now what? Everyone says CFW is the shit...what can I now do with this sweet baby

2. How can I rip my UMD's to the MC, and bout how big are they? I have a 4 gig card.

Thanks a lot, this is easily the most cordial and helpful thread on GAF. Much appreciated to the uninitiated

The in theory relates to the fact that I'm having problems at the moment, but fear not as further investigations have revealed this is likely to be specific to me. :(

Right, I've come full circle with this issue, it seems like it's a problem with the ripping process at my end. I've tried this now with two discs that I own, Final Fantasy Origins and Alundra. Both ripped to BIN/CUE format and converted to EBOOT with Simple Popstation v3 beta - no errors at all. When I try and play either I get the problem I described earlier.

Now, to check, I downloaded a copy of Alundra in IMG format (Don't do this at home folks!) and converted that using the same process and it plays just fine. So it either (a) doesn't like the BIN/CUE format (Which seems unlikely), (b) there are some consistency problems when using my CD drive to rip (But I've tried it from two different drives, albeit both shitty laptop ones) or (c) POPSLOADER hates me. My money's on (c).

1. I'm not the best person to ask. I do this pretty much only so that I can play games I own straight from the memory stick.
2. Nice and easy. Hit select in the XMB (Change the speeds to 333/166 while you're in there) and change the USB device to UMD Disc, then start the USB connection, now when you navigate to the drive that pops up on your desktop it'll just be the ISO file. Copy to the desktop, then change the USB mode back to Memory Stick and dump the ISO in the /ISO folder in the root of the memory stick. :)

Put UMD in PSP. Press SELECT and change USB DEVICE to UMD. Connect PSP to PC using USB cable and enable connection.

Edit: No45 sounds like a problem ripping the PSX game to me. You could try another program called CDRWIN.

Edit2: This should fix your memory card speed issue http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HXP373PO

Edit3: I then use YACC to compress the ISO rip from UMD.

Another question I'm kinda wondering what's so fancy about the 3.71 m33-4 that's better than all the CFW above it?

In what way do you mean. IMO there is no reason for Phat PSP users to upgrade to 3.80, 3.90 M33 as it hsa added no new features to it and it plays all released UMD games also.

Slim PSP users get Skype and Pandora/Time Machine IPL functionality.

What about the patapon demo that just came out last week? It and the god of war demo both require 3.80 to play.

Papaton, the full UMD release works on 3.71 M33, dunno about GOW until its released.

Yup, so PowerISO officially is no use for ripping PSX CDs. I really should have tested this before forking out the $30 on a full version.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure they'll have much sympathy with me if I ask for a refund. :lol

Ok, so I'm running 3.4 OE-A and wan't to upgrade to the latest version. I read that I have to go to 3.52 first, but when I try and run the 3.52 Firmware Creator, it says "Loading 1.50 firmware...File 150.PBP couldn't be opened. Press X to exit."

What the hell?

Did you set up the 1.50 installer properly? The 1.50 installer eboot.pbp needs to be renamed 150.pbp.

Pretty much exactly how you set up 3.40 OE, actually.

What exactly do I rename? Do I keep the file in the folder, or do I separate it? Does it go in the GAME, or GAME150 folder?

Has anybody ripped the Japanese version of FFVIII? I keep reading about issues with the American version, will I run into the same thing here?

Reading the readme would probably go a long way to helping you out, if you're talking about the 1.50 installer. Because the official 1.50 installer is NOT the same thing as a 1.50 kernel patch.

Here you go:
3.52 M33 Readme said:
PSP 3.52 M33 Installation

1 - If you are under official 1.50 PSP firmware, copy kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folders from "1.50only/" of this download to your "ms0:/PSP/GAME/" and use it.
2 - Once done it, or if you are under any Special/Open Edition/M33, copy M33CREATOR folder to your "ms0:/PSP/GAME" (1.50fw) or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150" (SE/OE)
3 - Download official 3.52 eboot, rename it to 352.PBP and place it on "ms0:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/" or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/"
4 - Download official 1.50 eboot, rename it to 150.PBP and place it on "ms0:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/" or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/"
5 - Go to Games/Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute "3.52 M33 CREATOR". Once finished, it will go back to the XMB.
6 - Go again to Games/Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute "3.52 M33UPDATE". You'll have to press X to agree to the installation.
7 - When finished, press X to shut down and reboot manually.
8 - Enjoy your 3.52 M33 ;)

Here is the latest update:

- Now uses 3.52!!!
- M33 NO-UMD: fixed problem with Simple 2500 Series Portable, The IQ Cube
- Fix a bug which made Go!Cam, GPS and sceKernelLoadExecVSH* not work in game mode.
- PSN downloaded PSX games support wasn't working in 3.51 M33 (didn't work in latest OE's either). Now it is working again. If an original PSN game still doesn't work, we recommend to delete files KEYS.BIN if exists, and copy the game again from ps3 to psp.

I did.

Like I posted above, running that thing it says to do first won't work.

Then you've effed up step 4 somehow, either by renaming it incorrectly, placing it in the wrong location, or downloading the wrong installer. The 1.50 installer you're looking for is the eboot file that contains the official Sony 1.50 firmware. You mentioned Dark Alex's 1.50 v2 kernel patch at some point. That is NOT what you're looking for.

so i just ripped the patapon .iso to my computer. I transferred it to my memory card into the /GAMES folder. I assumed it would be in the memory stick area under games...can't find it.

What am I missing?

Yeah, in the x:\ISO folder. But first use YACC (Yet Another CSO Converter) to compress it into a CSO!

do I create the ISO folder in the main level of the MC?

EDIT: okay, so I figured that part out, little trial and error action.

Next (tomorrow) I will try and tackle PS1 games (come on FF7!)

Thanks for all your help

Ok, so I'm trying to install 3.52 from 3.4 OE-A and I'm following the instructions exactly. I put the two kxploitpatcher folders into my GAME folder and I get the message "This application doesn't apply to this firmware."

Mejilan

Dude, again, you need to READ that readme. You're only supposed to use the kxploitpatcher if you're PSP is running on 1.50 official. It's the first freakin' step. Read the ENTIRE readme and plot out your course of action, if you must, but read it. Understand it. It is NOT complicated.

This thread put both of my PSPs on 3.71 M33! My PSP phat can finally play modern (post-2.7x) games, and my PSP slim can play Pata pata pata pon, and I can run homebrew on both. The awesomeness of this situation cannot be overrated. Thanks, GAF! (And Dark_Alex, and all the other devs, too.)

Edit: The idea of ripping the Capcom, Taito, Midway, and Namco compilations to Memory Stick and not having to carry the UMDs on trips... I think I'm going to cry with joy.

While my logic was wacky, I thought it still applied to me because I was under the impression that my firmware was actually below 1.5.

I'm finally onto the 3.9 update, it's been stuck on "Please wait..." for about 8 minutes now. Is that bad?

EDIT: Going on 15 now...

Next time, join the ISOs.

What app would I need to join the ISO's together? I used some sort of batch file to make Parasite Eve join but I can't find anything like that for Lunar. I'd appreciate the help.

Red Squirrel RS-GUI 3.0 is a very nice multi-disc POPS conversion program.

3.90 M33 is identical in every way to 3.80 if you have Phat PSP. If you have Slim PSP, it has Skype functionality included.

I'm currently running a PSPSlim at 3.80 M33 .....so I shouldn't even bother upgrading to 3.90 then?

I have an original 8GB Pro Duo...and have just found out that Popsloader doesn't work properly with most 8GB sticks (currently on 3.80 M33-5). I see that there's been a patch released to fix this, but there is a warning about bricking that I don't completely understand (forgive me, I'm a noob):
ark AleX also recently released a patch for 8GB memory stick support on any CFW. On addressing the issue with the Popsloader, Dark AleX said that:

I haven't been able to reproduce the problem in my 8GB card, but anyways i think the reason is literally that the memory stick was not ready in the time plugins are loading, althoug the memory stick modules are loaded, but they require some time to initialize as they are executing code in other thread. The code in 3.80-3.90 of plugins loading is same, it was probably the change of sony ms driver what altered timings, etc.

To install the PRX, Dark AleX gave these instructions: "Try this prx (systemctrl.prx for the phat, systemctrl_02g.prx for the slim), replacing the one of the flash0 kd folder, and tell me if it works after this."

Dark Alex also gave this warning: "By using this prx's you won't be able to init the PSP without a memory stick inserted. I would fix that in a formal release, but I need to know first if the trick is working."

Note that by using installing this PRX, your PSP 3.80 M33 will brick without the memory stick. Users are asked to be careful when installing the app.
First of all...where exactly do I install this - in my popsloader folder inside the seplugins folder? If so, I don't see a file that it would replace, since I don't already have a systemctrl.prx file.

Re: bricking - does the above warning basically mean that not using this memory stick in my PSP (after installing the file) will result in it being bricked?

If there's been a better patch/update released since, please let me know :)

So the CFW is pretty awesome. My PSP library is small and being able to carry it all on one 4 gig hard drive is pretty fantastic. It's also pretty dope how easy the process was to rip my games. Bravo.

Besides that there were two things I wanted to achieve with the CFW. 1. PSone games 2. emulators. Turns out my box of PS One games is back at my folks house in Wisconsin so my plans for figuring that out this weekend are out the window.

That leaves me with emulators. (IF THIS IS NOT A KOSHER TOPIC, LET ME KNOW SO I CAN DELETE THIS). I'd love to have some of my classic RPG's in my pocket. Any suggestions for good emulators on the PSP?

You should use the Network Update auto-update functionality built into your CFW. It will update to 3.90 M33-2 which has some fixes for SEPLUGINS & POPSLOADER on various different MS.

No45: Emulator talk is fine here. I'm sure lots of folks can help you out with the best and how to use them.

Two things:

1. Will I still run the risk of that bricking error.

2. Will updating to 3.90 result in my losing the ability to do anything I can do on 3.80/encounter problems because this CFW is pretty new?

1. Very little chance, same as manually updating.
2. 3.90 M33 is identical to 3.80 except for Skype and M33 improvements.

Reboot into Recovery Menu and verfiy use M33 Network Update is enabled.
