PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Quick question.

I've never got the online part of any games working when running from Memory Stick using Custom Firmware.

Is it true that you can't access online parts of games using CFW??

If you can then what do you need to do?? I'm using a phat with 3.80 M33-2.

Done all that. Wifi works for all other PSP functions including Internet Browser but always fails in a game.

Can the PSP do WPA in game?
I had the same problem on official firmware the other day.

The internet and the network test worked fine, but when I tried to go online in wipeout the option for my internet connection was dark grey and I couldn't select it.

My neighbors connection is unprotected though so I connected to that and everything worked fine.

I"m trying to access the online parts of Outrun 2006.

My network is WEP and I've upgraded to 3.90 M33-2 on my phat and no joy. I get the internet browser working fine and all other network related options. I even did the CFW upgrade via the Network Update option.

But after selecting my home network in any game I always get "network initialization failed".

Annoying.

Either have a UMD in the drive or change UMD ISO MODE to Sony NP9660 or M33 driver by pressing SELECT.

Just out of curiosity, would this fix the problem people have been having with the 3.80+ Sony loader? Dumb question, I know.

No I don't think so. There is a fatsmod patch by Dark_Alex to load fatsmod from 3.71 onto 3.80-3.90 M33. Gimme a few minutes to track the patch down.

Oh ok, thanks for that i got it working by putting a umd in, but when would you press select to go into UMD ISO mode?

Heh, I did do that one (the memstick reading patch). But apparently, the Sony Loader itself is still broken (giving long loads, sound/audio glitches). That's why I was wondering if sticking a UMD into the drive would alleviate the problems people were having or not.

Dark Alex patch is here.
and the needed 3.71 prx is uploaded here.

Edit: Sorry misunderstood what you meant. Having UMD in drive with NO UMD MODE disabled "should" fix the Sony loader issues as its not used.

Hey guys.

Many thanks to Dragon Akehi for all the help over PM :)

I've installed all the different versions of POPsloader up to 3.52, still have 3.70 and 3.72 to do. I'm assuming I don't need to do it for 3.80 since I'm using 3.80 M33-5 anyway, right?

Anyone been playing/played Fighting Force on PSP? I managed to convert my Fighting Force disc to PSP format, and it runs ok. I just get really bad static sound. I've tried all the POPsloader versions that I have, and there's static in all of them. THIS site says that the game runs well on 3.02 POPs, but I still get static.

I was hoping someone had managed to run this game without the awful noise somehow...any pointers appreciated :)

That's interesting. So basically if I come across any of my games that are giving me trouble, just pop in any UMD into the drive and then load the ISO?

Hey do you guys know if there's a program that can test the speed of my memory sticks?

I'm curious if my 1 gig Sandisk is faster than my Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo card.

Thanks!

Try this program called BlackSpeed 2.0. It runs a basic read/write test on your MS.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q2F65BHZ.
It has a base line of Sony 32MB card and 1GB Sony and Sandisk AFAIK.

What games are you seeing the issues with Sony NP9660 loader?

I haven't had any problems -- yet. But speaking with Mejilan and a few others, apparently there are real problems with the Sony loader, even after the fatmspatch. Forewarned is forearmed, and all that.

I know this is not directer to me, but Tales of Eternia and Castlevania [the remake and SotN] have problems [running them on 333 alleviate the problems almost completely]...

Heres the deal.. i'v bought a psp off of my mate just recently, the firmware vesion is 1.50, now i know that 1.50 can run homebrew apps but im a COMPLETE noob at this and have been scouring the net all day trying to read up on what firmware/loaders i need to play ripped umd's off the memory stick and its completely fucking overwhelmed me with all the different versions of firmware, downgraders, iso loaders, ect.

Alright first thing first is we need to get you off the ancient 1.50FW. Its very limited these days.

You can go to 3.52 M33 from your 1.50FW. Download the Dark Alex 3.52 M33 here and then download the Sony 3.52 FW here. Rename the Sony 3.52 EBOOT.PBP to 352.PBP.
Extract the contents of the Dark Alex 3.52 M33 and copy the kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folder to PSP/GAME on your Memry Stick.
Copy the 352.PBP file to the M33CREATOR folder and then copy M33CREATOR folder to PSP/GAME also.

To install the upgrade, browse to GAME/Memory Stick on XMB, run the kxploitpatcher first, then run the M33 installer.

Okay will do, thanks sooo much.. fucking a bit overwhelming for a newcomer to the scene :D

So I have the original 3.90 M33. If I go to Network Update, it'll update to the next M33? I won't wreck my stuff with real Sony firmware?

If so, this is incredible.

Make sure you have it set to the correct settings in recovery mode. After that it is a joy, takes only a few seconds to update.

That being?

Edit: Nevermind, I assume it's just the "Use M33 network update" option. Thanks. :D

This is incredible. :lol

Right, after finally getting my PC to rip my PS1 discs (For some reason it won't rip to .iso, but .bin/.cue is fine) I'm now trying to get this to run. I have it converted to an EBOOT and loaded onto the PSP in so far as I can select it (Final Fantasy Origins) from the menu and everything. It then shows the SCE logo (Splash screen for the Sony loader?) and then the screen fades to blank then... nothing. :(

I'm pretty sure it's loading the emulator OK, because when I hit the Home button I get the same options as when I play the downloaded version of SotN (Quit Game, Controller Settings, Memory Card Utility etc...). Any ideas?

Actually, I've just loaded the recovery menu and noticed that the plugin wasn't enabled. But now that it is, I chose 3.72 from the dropdown and it just hung. And now it hangs when I try and launch the game (I assume it's remembered the choice I made?).

I'm on 3.90 m33-2 and using the 3.80 M33 Popsloader downloaded from Dark Alex' website. Also tried with the one that came with 3.71 m33.

EDIT: OK so I've just seen how to recover the version used (Hold R when running the game). Is it possibly because I'm choosing the wrong version? Also, I've just uncovered this tutorial and I haven't done half of that (Just copied the files and made sure the .txt file points to the right place)... should I have done?

Thanks for that. It now doesn't hang after selecting the version, but still all I get is the blank screen after that. I think, before I go any further with this (Because I've been meaning to do it for a while) I'm going to run through the UPMS procedure with this new memory stick (Initially I did it with a spare 1GB I had lying around) so I get everything from that process (Including the apps).

Once that's done I'll revisit this. :)

EDIT: To whom it may concern, the link to UPMS in the guide is broken it seems, I guess they've released a newer version? http://www.upms-project.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&cid=32 takes you to the page where you can pick v3(r2).

EDIT2: There are some extra options as well with the install it seems.

I'm about to take the plunge one of these evenings. Before I do: I can still use the Sony store, right? I have no interest in piracy, I just want my homebrew, and I want to be able to buy some PS1 and PSP games.

You need the actual prx files from the previous firmwares to go with the popsloader. The POPSloader plugin only allows the use of the files but you need to provide them yourself.

I'm uploading the files now. I'll edit post with link when done.

That's very useful :)

I am getting a new memory card, and was just wondering - say I copied everything over from my current memory card to the new one, would I have to worry about installing anything in regards to POPS Loader plugins/app etc, or should the copy and pasted stuff work?

EDIT: I just read somewhere that the folders that you store your PSX EBOOTS in shouldn't have spaces in...I've been using folders with spaces. Will changing this have much of an effect on quality?

Also: Dragon Akehi alluded to this question earlier. Is it advisable to always play with a UMD in the drive...if this has no bearing on play quality, I won't bother using it.

In case anyone actually cares about homebrew games here's a preview of a Rez clone (called "Resonate") that looks pretty bitchin':
Resonate is a new PSP Homebrew game where the objective is to evolve. You start as a Sea Urchin, and can move up to Tuna, then Stingray then Thresher Shark by collecting evolution tokens. But get damaged, and de-evolve into a lowly Plankton, or lose the level. As a rail shooter it is all about timing and aiming. This game is inspired by the PS2/DreamCast game Rez.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKmvRmS4cAU

The levels are made in a level editor which will be released when the game is. The levels are composed of fractal landscape and other decorations. The enemies are textured MD2s. Static objects are in Wavefront OBJ format.

Question...so currently I'm running 3.71 M33-4 on my fat PSP, which is great - except for one reason or another, when I put the PSP to sleep, it doesn't wake up and I have to start it up fully again.

Would updating my fat PSP to 3.90 M33-3 fix the issues? And can I just jump straight to 3.90 M33 ---> 3.90 M33-3 from there, or do I have to do 3.80 and friends first?

navanman said:
3.90 M33 is identical in every way to 3.80 if you have Phat PSP. If you have Slim PSP, it has Skype functionality included.

Stupid question, but where is Skype located? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I believe you have to change your PSP region to Euro/US as I guess you have Japanese PSP?
As I remember, Skype certification was cancelled for PSP in Japan at last minute so thats why its not showing up.

Hold L-Trigger when you insert the battery until the memory stick light starts to flash.

So I'll be going through the process in an hour or so when I get home, and was just wondering what the best uses of the new found PSP abilities I should check out.

Any suggestions? I have a couple PS1 games I was hoping to be able to play but I'm not sure how involved that process is?

In case anyone is interested in this, apparently you can only rip single data track CDs to .iso/.daa - anything else needs to use the .bin/.cue format. I assume the smaller file is the pointer for the various different tracks?

Still having no joy with this for some reason. I have all the files in there (I think) and the plugin enabled in the recovery menu but I just get a blank screen after selecting the POPS version, regardless of which one I choose. :(

Do the PSX games even launch? Does the PSX boot logo appear?
You may need to overwrite the one file id...(something something) in POPSLOADER folder with the 3.80 M33 popsloader version.

Yeah I see the logo pop up and then select the POPS version then just blankness. If I hit home I get the emulation options so it's definitely starting up. As for the file, you mean "idcanager_old.prx"? I'll give that a shot now.
