PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Then the answer is a resounding "NO!!"
The UMD format is a fucking blight.

really? Hmm, I wonder why some ppl mentioned it's faster to run a game off a UMD instead of a memory stick as far as faster loading time goes

I got that too, just did it the old way =\

I guess the server is getting hammered.

The only way I could think this remotely possible if the person had the following: a Slim PSP, a game that didn't work with the borked post-3.71 loader properly, were inherently retarded.

Because people love spreading misinformation. Alternately, people love posing as experts. As for me, I love being able to get into my PSP games before passing 3 subways stops on my commute. ;p

Yeah, I'm only a couple of hours in but it's been flawless so far. It was one of the first games I tried when D_A released Popstation and that version was a bit flaky, with the messed up battle swirls and stuff.

Now if only I could get that save off my PS3...

I'm on 3.80 Pops and it works fine so far playing FF VII, looks like were on the same boat :( I wish I could get my ps3 save working for the psp

I may have found a way to get my FFVII save to the PSP. I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner, but my PS2 is modded and there's a homebrew file manager for it that lets you copy saves to a USB drive, and from there there are open source utilities to convert it to an ePSXe format and from there I can load it with CWCheat. I don't know if I'll have a chance to try it tonight but I'll put together a tutorial if it works.

Please keep me updated, I would really like NOT to go back through everything on the first disc.

It certainly works, I've done it for other games like Tactics Ogre, and it goes both ways ( PSP -> PSX too).

When you guys are refering to pops do you mean popsloader?

I'm thinking about ripping FFVII because of Crisis Core so I'm interested. lol

POPS = Sony's PSOne emulator for the PSP.

POPSLoader = special plugin to custom firmwares developed by Dark-Alex that allows you to store multiple versions of POPS in one configuration, and select which version of POPS you want to run with any given PSOne game. It's pretty much integral to maximize compatibility.

Firmwares (official or custom) only come with one version of POPS. For example, 3.90 (and 3.90 M33) only come with POPS 3.90.

OK, so I have my saves converted to the right format, but I can't for the life of me get CWCheat to load on pops. It works fine on actual PSP games, but not pops. And yes I checked all the obvious things like whether it's enabled, whether pops.txt is pointing at the right file, etc.

Is there a trick I'm missing? I'm running 3.90 M33-3 on a slim.

CWCheat won't load up if you're still in the PSOne's boot up screen. You have to be in the actual game, preferably past the title screen.

Nope, no dice. I went as far as being in the actual game and it still wouldn't load.

There are two install files in the CWCheat folder when you download it: INSTALL and INSTALL371. Am I right in saying that INSTALL371 is only for 3.71, and not 3.71+?

What are the benefits of going from 3.71 m33-4 to the newest 3.90 m33-3? Everything is working well for me right now, is it a pain to upgrade to the newest from 3.71?

It couldn't be easier. Install 3.90 M33 as you would any modern custom firmware. From then on, enjoy the benefits of Dark-Alex's co opted Network Update for all future CFW updates. :D

So I take it you're over the whole 3.80/3.90 debacle bit? Should I get my phat up to 3.90 now?

SUCCESS!!!1

I've got my mid-disc 2 FFVII save running on the PSP!

I didn't use the 3.71 version in the end. All I did was back up my seplugins folder to the computer and replaced it completely with the one that CWCheat came with. I'm not going to use it beyond getting these saves in there so I'll just copy the old one back in there when I'm finished.

Now to do the same with MGS, and I'll put together a tutorial tomorrow.

Well, it is my understanding that the Sony ISO Loader is still borked. I've switched over to the M33 one until that gets resolved. However, it's a downgrade I'm willing to live with, for now, since Crisis Core seems to run perfectly. Problem dodged.

My other big issue was that jumping up to 3.80 without the benefit of a POPSLoader plugin killed Dragon Quest VII. I've since finished DQVII, and a new POPSLoader has come out. Problem solved.

As to the borked memory stick driver, DA's fatmsmod patch seems to be doing the trick. Problem solved.

I'm still keeping my fat on 3.71 M33-4, just in case. But I haven't felt any pinches since updating my slim to 3.90 M33-2 (and today, M33-3). But I've got a working Pandora to break my slim back down to 3.71 M33-4 (again), should it prove necessary.

Maybe I'll start playing some more with the Slim then. It's kinda been laid to the wayside, as the Phat remains main unit. Part of that is waiting for the screen protector to come in along with needing a 8GB card anyway...

uhh. i can't see shit on my ms when i connect via usb now. wtf happened? everything is still there, i just can't see it from my pc anymore.

NVM: i figured out what i did wrong :p

And that won't affect anything I've already got on the memory card (my games ripped off UMD and an SNES and NES emulator)?

UMD games might not run as well until you install the fatmsmod patch and switch away from the Sony driver to the M33 driver.

Arrrgh. I finally got around to ripping BOFIV, and PrometeusPro KEEPS CRASHING whenever I hit "start". Anyone know what the issue might be, and if there's an alternative program for OSX?

Works with every other game...

Alright, I have yet to get a PSP, so i haven't gotten into this totally hardcore yet, but I found this guide: http://tinyurl.com/ystkb6
from the looks of it, i'll be able to install CFW on a PSP slim without the help of any other PSPs. I know i'd need to buy a DATEL battery or craft a pandora battery, but that's no trouble.

I have 2 questions, though:
1. Can anyone here verify this method succesfully working? I know there are lots of replies there saying it works, but i trust NeoGAF more :D

2. After I install CFW... then what? :o Will it be self-explanatory once I get it? Do i simply rip PSX ISOs onto a memory stick and cram it into my PSP, and it'll play the games?

thanks again :)

Being able to convert a tweaked/modded battery or service tool into a Pandora without a cracked PSP isn't news, or a big deal. I don't know about that specific tutorial, since I don't really feel like reading it at this hour, but yes, the practice is very much possible.

Using CFW requires a minor learning curve, which any of us here could probably help you overcome. UMDs can directly be ripped into an ISO and dropped on a mem stick (in the proper folder) and work. Ripped PSOne CD ISOs must be converted into a proper PSP executable to work.

My PS3 doesn't recognize my PSP

it detects my PSP like a generic USB device(), does anyone have this problem?

I have 3.92 M33-3

Where would I get the different versions of POPS? Am I even allowed to ask this? O.o;;

You need to dump them from the original firmware update files.

(you don't really, but that would be naughty)

Can I go directly to one of these higher updates from 3.4 OE or do I have install 3.52 custom firmware first....and then the next one...and so on?

Thank you

Actually, you'll need to update to 3.52 M33 and then patch it to either 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4. From there you can update to whatever firmware you want.

Anything PRIOR to 3.52 M33-3 is barred from the newer firmwares due to a bug (consequently fixed in 3.52 M33-3).

Laharl, to select your version of POPS, you need to configure the POPSLoader plugin. CWCheat has nothing to do with that.

Wank, you can jump straight to 3.90 M33. From there, continue updating via the Network Update functionality, which DA has taken over for his own ends.

Mejilan, does a bat-signal alert you whenever someone asks a question in here?

I'll be joining you guys soon.

alright, i got my PSP slim and I created a "magic memory stick," now the hard part: making a pandora's battery. any helpful tutorials? any methods that don't require soldering?

edit: BOOYA i totally did it!!! :D

I bought an stamina battery today and I tried to open the original slim battery to see how small is the circuit board and to see if I can convert it into a Pandora battery, I was being very careful with an exacto knife and all of a sudden, a mini cloud of smoke and sparks came flying out of one side of the battery, the battery still works but it scare the shit out of me.

What's the battery life with the stamina battery on the psp slim?

I fully charged the stamina battery tonight and it shows a little over 8 hours, compared to around 4 hours with the original slim battery.

Oh, D_A.

Anyone else's PSP (phat) just refuse to come on sometimes? Mine only goes back to the XMB via the HOME button ~40% of the time. Usually I can get it to come on after 5-10 tries while holding the R button (recovery), but that ain't workin' either. This happened a few days ago and I just took the battery out and let it sit for two days. I don't feel like waiting that long again. I can't be the only one experiencing this.

The LED will illuminate, but nothing after that.
