PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I think you need to place the UPMS folder (with the eboot in it) in the PSP > GAME folder.

Either put any UMD game in the UMD drive of the PSP or change the UMD ISO MODE to Sony NP9660 or M33 driver by pressing SELECT.

GAF, I need your help on this:

I'm always backing up my UMDs to Memory Stick to preserve battery life and improve loading times on my classic model PSP. However, I can't seem to get God of War Chains of Olympus to run properly off my SanDisk 2GB Pro Duo. It seems like the game is constantly streaming off the memory card (as is the case with all the GTA games) causing severe slowdown and overall choppiness. I've fixed the GTA problem by clocking the PSP to 333MHz, but this seems to have no effect with God of War since it already defaults to 333MHz.

I've tried various ISO loaders with no improvement whatsoever. I'm currently back to playing from the original UMD, but having God of War on my memory stick for prolonged portable fun would be so much better.
Anyone, please?

To all the people complaining about FFVIICC being choppy, I've never had that problem with the Sony (NP9660 or whatever it's called) ISO Loader and 333MHz.

God of War was designed to run off the UMD but I hear if you don't compress the ISO it will run just fine. If you don't have the ISO compressed then your just going to have to run it of the UMD like it was meant too. Same for FFVII:CC don't compress the ISO, it runs just fine (on the slim).

It's really weird that FFVII:CC runs fine as a compressed ISO (CSO) off my memory stick while God of War is unplayable (uncompressed). Did anyone try and see if formatting the stick helps?

Also, does FAT32 actually make a difference performance-wise compared to FAT16?

Those with stuttering issues with ISO and CSO of FFVII:CC and GOW; have you installed the fatsmod patch?
This patch installs the 3.71 M33 fatsmod (MS read/write driver) to fix issues with newer fatsmod.prx included in > 3.80 M33

I'm trying to get back into using my psp but I'm stuck at 3.03 OE-C. I've been out of the custom firmware scene for the longest time. Could anyone tell me the easiest way to get up to date to the latest CF? thanx

Anyone using the Applecor theme? I really want to use it, but I'm using 3.90 M33-3 and I'm not sure if it'll work. It says its for 3.90 M33-2.

I'm on 3.71 M33-4. Am I right in assuming that I don't need this mod?

Is there any way to put CFW on a PSP Slim without having access to a PSP fat and without buying anything aside from an untouched memory stick?

It's been a little while since I've checked the thread, but I'm currently at 3.71 M33-4 at quite content with the PSOne compatibility.

I remember when 3.80 M33 came out, auto updating came to fruition but there was also hiccups with playing PSOne games so I held off. Now 3.90 M33-3 is out and it looks like it has been updated to play games such as Coded Arms, Patapon and Harvest Moon Innocent Life to be played without a UMD.

But what is the situation with PSOne game support, is it a lot smoother again? Remote Play was also only possible with a fix by navanman, is it now standard with the latest cfw update? Since 3.71 M33-4, it seems like Auto Updating is the main feature to come out (which is admittedly huge), is there anything else worthy to note? Any drawbacks, like the initial PSOne game compatibility in 3.80 M33, worth mentioning?

Finally, I'm about to help a friend with upgrading his 1.5 Phat (holding back for the right time to jump in, lol) so I just wanted to confirm the steps.

1.5 > 3.52 M33 > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.90 M33 > 3.90 M33-3 > 1.50 add-on for emulators

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you just install it (better wait for confirmation), but .... WHY.

I want to test out the latest official firmware and I want to buy some games from the PlayStation Store (when trying to do that with the CFW it gives me errors on installation).

I can always go back to CFW with my Datel TOOL Battery.

You just install it directly on top of the M33 FW.
From 3.71 M33 and on, you just download it and install it as per normal.

Makes sense, then. And sorry for making you type all that when it's not really any of my business.

Unless it was changed, UPMS is an .iso file and needs to go into the ISO folder to run, its not an eboot.

Ugh, still can't get CC to run smoothly.

When I hit select what settings should I have, and do I need to compress? What should I use for that?

Running 3.90 M33-3 on a fat PSP, I have 1.50 kernel (whatever that does).

Then your install is borked.
I'm running 3.90 M33-3 and I purchase things all the time. I got Beats, Ape Quest and more.

Please download this fatsmod patch and install it and see how CC runs afterwards.

Just got my 8GB MS today :D ...

So... just copy + paste the folders/directories/files from the old MS to the new one and everything will be fine... right?

Try formatting the flash1 via recovery menu. This has fixed the issue with downloading from PSN for some.

Yeah, I got my 8 a few weeks ago. VERY NICE!

Fuck how much did you pay for it and where? I dun wanna pay 100 bucks for it. I know BB has it for like 96, but no way. Having 2 4 gigs is very inconvenient.

The 8GB cards are around $75 from what I've seen in Canada, this is from the computer stores that don't rip you off.

I'm new to this so I have a bunch of questions.

1) I'm going to get my 3.73 slim PSP installed with CFW from a store. Should it be 3.90 M33?

2) Will I be able to make a backup UPMS from my new CFW PSP afterward? I don't want to ever have to go back to the store and pay for it again.

3) Am I allowed to ask how to make my own backups? Everyone knows how to pirate shit, but I actually have the games and I would like to make my own backups to play off the MS for faster loading and longer battery life.

Can't help with the other two, but this one is really easy. Once you have CFW there is an option in the select memory to change the USB from memory stick to UMD mode. Once you do that, just plug the PSP into your PC, and you can copy the ISO directly off of the UMD onto your computer's hard drive. Once there, you can run an ISO compressor to convert it into a CSO if you'd like (both work with the custom firmware, but the compressed version takes up less space. Compressed sometimes runs choppier depending on the game).

Once you've got either the ISO or CSO on your PC, you just switch your PSP back into memory stick mode, and copy it into the ISO folder on your memory stick.

Then there's just one more option to check in the select menu so that it will play games from the memory stick (ISO mode, I believe?) and you're good.

OK, to rip my PSone discs to my PC I have ISO buster.

Now, I have yet to install anything but I just want to make sure I have everything I need to play PS1 games from my mem-stick.

I only have:
-3.80M33 Popsloader V2 from Dark_Alex's site
-RS-GUI PopStation MD for retrieving info about the disc (right?)

What else do I need to get and install to play my PS1 games on my PSP?

I feel like an idiot when it comes to all of this stuff, I still can't get CC:FFVII to run smoothly either. Ugh.

Does Patapon run off the MS on 3.71 M33-2?

What items do I need to ensure that I can recover from a brick and/or install CFW again on my own slim PSPs in case anything happens? I have CFW on my slim PSP right now.

Do I need an extra memory stick (assuming I want to use one solely for unbricking, and installation) and battery? Can I use a Sony battery or do I have to get a Datel TOOL?

is your memstick genuine? you shouldn't have a problem with crisis core if you run it uncompressed.

My new one (PSP Slim) is upgraded to the official 3.95....something tells me this isn't gonna be easy to install custom firmware on, is it? :(

That's what I thought about my Fat 3.90 (or something around there) but it was actually really easy.

My PSP slim is in the for sale thread but devilchicken diverted me here so I'd figure I'd ask.

Bought PSP Silver SLIM TA-85 (I think it's a TA-85).

Basically, it's bricked where I can go into recovery mode and see white text-holding the L trigger on startup- and actually install firmware HOWEVER, after any install all I get is a black screen. No matter what type of battery and no matter if it's just plugged in alone, black screen.

I have another question. What is the use of the Datel TOOL battery if one can create a pandora battery and UPMS using a PSP with CFW? I'm going to get a phat battery tomorrow (3.6V/2200mmA), will this work for creating a pandora battery?

it's for people who don't have a CFW PSP or know someone else with one.

umm, I think I know the answer, but this battery can be made into a pandora right? NOWHERE has any PSP batteries (at least in Canada), but this Futureshop had two of these. I was told that Sony is trying to fix their battery issues so they haven't shipped jack all to anybody since Christmas or something.

oh and anyone know if batteries can be reverted back and forth between pandora and normal use?

I need to know this too.

Do I need to buy a new battery? Do I need to buy a special memory card from a retailer?

If so can someone just link me to what I need. I read the first couple of pages but damn I can't find where to start from square one.

That one will work. It's the new ones in the PSPSlim cardboard packages that won't.

If it's in blister-pack-of-demon-death then it'll Pandora.

I'm thinking about picking up a PSP slim, but the whole custom firmware thing is proving confusing. Yes, I've read the OP numerous times. I feel like an old man bemused by the alien colours and shining lights of Best Buy.

As far as I can tell, the most useful aspect of custom firmware for me would be the reduction in load times. In fact, the vast load times are the only reason I'm still somwhat on the fence about buying the system. How much faster do games load from a memory stick than from UMD?

Would I be foolish to try and buy a PSP pre-installed with custom firmware from somewhere like eBay? I just don't want to buy the Datel tool and find the newest Slim battery can't be reverted to service mode - or that I'm too technologically illiterate to get everything working.

Damn Sony for not just selling their games on memory sticks. Why do they have this fetish for UMD again?

NOOOOOOoooOOO!!!

Mame4ALL doesn't support R-type!

I wonder what's up with the flakey MAME support anyway? You'd think that platform like PSP would be a ideal choice for MAME people.

Aske: I bought a Datel tool battery, installed CFW and it took me about 2 mins. It's a breeze and if anything the various guides around make the whole process seem overly complicated.
