So everything works, and it won't damage the PSP? Battery life must really take a hit if everyone isn't just making it their default clock speed...

Just about everyone with CFW is making it their default clock speed. Battery drain is higher when it's clocked at 333, but it isn't dangerous. The PSP is loaded with a 333mhz chip. Sony merely crippled it down to 222 due to battery consumption issues. It's not like we're overclocking the PSP, which can be dangerous with some electronics. 'Sides, but avoiding the UMD drive entirely when playing games, we also gain back a lot of juice that way. Takes quite a bit of electricity to power the drive and laser.

Yeah callous, not all games benefit. But I've yet experienced a game that crapped out on me with the PSP at 333. I've had both of my PSPs at 333 forever, and I never change it.

Excellent. I'll probably do this too. I was afraid it might cause overheating or something crazy.

An thoughts on my fatsmod question? I have the patch all downloaded and ready, but is there a risk using it unless I find I really need it?

I really appreciate all the answers to my plethora of noob questions by the way. Really hard to find opinions that don't conflict with each other in regard to a lot of these CFW specifics when I research on other sites.

No thats normal, its the most important step in the whole process, the boot code writer so your PSP is fooled into thinking its a Sony service repair MS.

Alright, but on the step "Now that I’ve got it, how do I use it?", I put my Pandora in and the unbricker memory stick and did NOT receive the prompt it says in the guide.

Reading some older posts in this thread, I now realize my slim may have the battery that can NOT be made into a Pandora...which means I stupidly spent over an hour creating...

It's either that or I did not make the Pandora correctly.

Emm I think you didn't read the guide quite right. If it is like the TotalNewbieEasyInstaller guide, the first and most important requirement is that you already have a Pandora Battery.
All that guide does is create the Pandora Memory Stick.

It is useless without a Tool or Pandora Battery. Either carefully crack open your battery casing and hard-mod it OR buy a Datel TOOL battery or one of the clones from DealExtreme.

I looked at a different guide on how to hard mode it. I did do it incorrectly, but I went back and fixed it; everything is good now. :)

I just wish I had bought an extra battery to save my NAND dump BEFORE I hard-moded it; I'm going to wait for the one I ordered online before I proceed.

You save your nand dump to the magic memory stick, not the battery. Make sure your stick has a bit of space on it, and hit square before you start the firmware installation. That'll back up your nand to the stick, and you can then reinstall it if anything goes wrong from the pandora menu accessed by the stick and the battery.

The modified battery just tricks your PSP into accepting the data on your memory stick. It doesn't exchange any information with the PSP, and has nothing to do with the firmware or the nand.

EDIT: And you know you need two batteries regardless, right? One normal battery, and one pandora? You can't use a pandora as a normal battery unless it's soft modded and you have the ability to switch it back.

Has anyone here tried Map this! ? It's awesome! It's a very nice app that lets you use maps from online map providers like google maps, world wind and yahoo maps. It can be used as a simple map viewer, including the ability to zoom in on maps, but in combination with 3rd party or the official Sony GPS add-on the PSP can be used as a full fledged GPS device.

You do have to learn how to use the Global Map Download Tool to get the maps you want to your PSP. It's quite a powerful tool that even lets you download the zoom levels you want.

Another app that was the first to show up in my quest to bring google maps to my PSP was PSP Maps. A fun little app that makes use of the wi-fi connection to stream maps to your PSP. It uses the memorystick to cache maps but in reality it can not be used to find your way without the availability of a wireless hotspot. Still, it's fun to dick around with. It also supports other map providers.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. So once I get my normal battery, I won't be using the pandora anymore?

since you're running 1.50 and not a CFW, use the kxploit patcher first, then do the firmware upgrading.

If I have a really "old" Pandora memory stick and battery that I made way back when Pandora first came out, what would I need to do to "upgrade" it to the current version? Does anything need doing to the battery, or just the memory stick?

DaCocoBrova

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Why would you leave it as a Pandora battery? Just convert it back to its original state.

You won't be using it to play your PSP, but keep it safe so that you can always boot up the service menu.

EDIT:

Yep - that works too. But it sounds like a hard modded battery, so reverting might be hit-or-miss.

The pandora battery will still work. As far as I know you should be able to use the old stick to install whatever version of CFW is already on it, and then update to 3.90 M33-3 from there. Check The Faceless Master's link above.

you only have to modify the memory stick.

you can use several things nowadays, but i suggest despertar del cementerio v5 or upms.

Converted my Slim PSP yesterday, took about an hour as the guides around the net were really confusing, but it's working fine now with the latest CFW.

Ripped Wipeout Pulse, Patapon and Tony Hawk Project 8 to my memory stick (photo below to show I own the games) and they're far better, much smoother at 333 - Pulse looks like it's now 60fps, Project 8 is a dream and Patapon's about the same, but with way quicker loading.

Well, it's the original battery that came with the PSP, and I don't use it any more as I have a stamina battery now, so that's why I left it as a Pandora (it will also be handy if anybody I know buys a PSP and wants it hacking).

that's the same thing i did with my original psp battery.

it doesn't hold a charge long enough to be useful for gaming, but it still lasts long enough to flash a PSP!

I have Filer, but I just mean something to deal with the huge list of apps.

I have select demos, purchased PSN games, homebrew stuff and PS1 games.

I just wish the bastard supported folders like the rest of the goddamn system.

Hey guys, friend asked me to put CFW on his slim,

I accidentally deleted my guides a while ago, tried the one in the op and it isn't working.

When I put the battery in with L held and the hold button on the slim doesn't shut down it just stays on. I haven't even seen it look at the memory stick.

Any ideas?

Alright guys, I've tried reading and deciphering a lot of this thread but I just cannot make heads or tails of what exactly my steps should be here.

I want to buy my first PSP and I want the slim version but I want to mod it so I can play my PSX games (which I do understand how to convert) and put my UMD titles on it too.

Is there a specific type I should buy? What else will I need (so I can buy it all at once)? I just want to make sure I get all the components so I can sit down and do it. I also have read about the Pandora battery and I don't know anyone else with a PSP. What are my options here to get from no PSP to sweet PSP as quickly as possible?

anyone got a good GBA emulator running on the PSP? I tried a couple but neither worked. One (with a crazy jumbled name that included symbols) loaded, but froze when I tried to open a rom.

OK, I dunno if someone's already mentioned this but SNES9X TYL has gotten A HUUUUUGE upgrade from some anonymous JP devs.

1) Save state loading no longer fucks the music up

2) VSYNC OFFICIALLY WORKS AT FULLSPEED @ 300MHZ (I still keep mine at 333)

3) Apparently fixed the crashing bugs, but thanks to 1, this isn't quite as crucial

4) Much much better speeds overall, before the mode7 part of Lufia II would slow to a crawl, but now it's fullspeed, and only slows down (and not nearly as much as before) when it is rotating + mode7

Everything you need to know, in the least complicated language I've yet found:

http://www.blastprocessing.net/?page_id=20

You should be fine with any PSP. I'll be trying this out with a brand new slim this evening, so I'll let you know if I encounter colossal failure of any kind.

I've uploaded the one I use: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F420LGA1. Put it in the Games folder, found in the PSP folder.

I find it to work perfectly. The only games I've had trouble with are Golden Sun 1 and 2, other than that, it's perfect. Be sure to download a file called gba_bios.bin (google it) and put it in the root folder (UO_gpSP_kai).

Brilliant. Downloaded it days ago but never got around to trying it out. Eventually deleted because I figured it'd be nothing more than another incremental upgrade for a wholly deficient bit of software. Now... I'm curious. :)

Edit - Ah, there's a new version today. I guess you're talking about that one, not the earlier test build released days ago.

There's a new version from the 25th. Is there an even newer one I haven't seen?

I finally got around to the whole CFW gig, and I've been ripping my UMD's today. I got the program to compress them, but I don't know if I should worry about using the default (max) compression setting. Is it detrimental at all?

Most games (especially the older ones) handle max compressions without any significant hitches. Now, depending on your mem stick and current CFW setup (fatmsmod patch or not), you might get performance issues.

Fair warning, if a game streams heavily off the UMD, do NOT compress it at all. Just run it as a clean ISO. UMD compression + UMD streaming = KABOOM!
