I just thought I'd give back to this thread, so here it is:
How to play your PSX games on your PSP - hopefully idiotproof Mac version
What you need:
- A Mac with at least 2GB of free space.
- A PSP with custom firmware (and plenty of free space on its Memstick).
- An USB cable to connect the PSP to the Mac.
- An internet connection (or other ways to acquire the programs mentioned below).
- At least one Playstation 1 game disk.
A friendly warning:
If you are ripping a game that spans more than one disk, be very careful that your "Game Name" and "Game ID" are exactly the same for all the disks. You need to be able to transfer your save data between them, and that only works if they are identical. I haven't tried it yet, but that's what I've heard.
Also, if you already have an image file of your PSX game
, skip ahead to part two.
.
Part one: Ripping the PS1 game
Step one:
Download
libusb and
Prometeus Pro 0.10.1. Yes, the latter claims it's only a Demo, but aside from a nagscreen and a pretty harmless restriction it's full-featured. Beats me why the dev even bothered with it. Then again, he seems to have a rather peculiar taste in UI design so maybe that's just the way he does things.
Step two:
Unpack the libusb archive and install the package.
Unpack the Prometeus Pro archive and drag the application to wherever you want.
Start Prometeus Pro and click on the highlighted areas.
Step three:
This will bring us to a fairly cluttered screen. Don't be afraid, it just looks scary. For now, all we do is insert the PSX game disc into your Macs' CD/DVD drive, and after that press...
...the "Rip" button in the upper right corner. Choose a name and place to save the files.
Step four:
Wait.
Twiddle your thumbs while the orange Memstick-access light blinks merrily.
When it's done it pops up a dialogue.
It's safe to click OK, but when in doubt, reference the game disk/packaging/specialized websites and check if the program guessed correctly.
Congratulations, you have successfully ripped a PSX game!
.
Part two: Converting the PSX image
( If you've obtained your image from other sources, use the "Open" button above the Rip button and check if the program guessed the Game ID correctly. )
Step five:
Customize that image. The default icon and background are ugly as sin and shouldn't really be used if you value your eyes.
You need at least:
A) one icon file (PNG, 144x80 pixel) that represents the game
B) one background image (PNG, 480x272 pixel) that is shown when the game is selected
C) one title image (PNG, 310x180 pixel) that is shown in the lower right corner - I use a
blank if I don't have a good one handy
Notice how the PSP preview below changes according to your choices.
All of those images can be found on the net for your convenience.
I'll leave searching for them as an exercise to the reader (Hint: OP!).
Of course you're free to fiddle with animations and background music, but in the beginning you should just concentrate on the basics. So just leave the other text fields alone for now.
Step six:
If you want to save the files we're gonna install on our PSP somewhere else, choose "Save" and select another location.
Unless your game is a PAL game (Europe) uncheck the "PAL->NTSC" checkbox at the bottom, near the Start button.
Step seven:
Connect your PSP to the Mac.
On the PSP, go into USB mode (Press left until you arrive at "Settings", then choose "USB connection").
Press Start in Prometheus Pro.
Wait for the blinking to stop.
Step eight:
Copy the whole folder that Prometheus Pro just created to your PSP into the /PSP/GAME folder.
Congratulations, we're
DONE.
Don't forget unmounting the PSP before disconnecting it, and enjoy the nostalgia.
