Great to know. Thanks to both of you. SLowdown on Flamie would be about the only time it wouldn't be a big deal so that is great news.

I'll report back if I can get it up and running. Dealextreme took over a week to ship out my battery+mem card. Combined with the long weekend, it is a long wait.

You didn't choose EMS shipping, did you?

It's customizable. Hit the Home button when in PSOne game to toggle between various options, or if you're using a really new version of POPS, reconfigure.

Mejilan said:
POPS is the emulator in your PSP, so THAT'S highly unlikely. If you're unsure, just reflashing your CFW.
Yeah, it ended up being the POPSLoader version. I installed POPS Loader, used 3.71's version, and the game works like a charm.

Yeah, EMS is insanely expensive, but I figured with free they would take their sweet time to ship it... We'll see how quickly EMS goes out (really hope I get it before next weekend!).

man, people love their screens.

the 2000 screen is perfect to me, don't see why i'd need to buy a whole new system for a better one. now if the new one had bluetooth...

i'd jump on a 3000 in an instant if i could use pandora on it because of the better response times.

if they ever crack that bitch with a fool proof method i'd get it in a heartbeat.

but i need cfw. i really don't think the psp is worth owning/using w/o cfw.

The ones for the PC aren't even that reliable.

nullDC for the PSP is another head scratcher...could that ever even approach half-speed? Maybe it's just a cool programming exercise the dev decided to take on for fun?

It really isn't. Games are mediocre at best. I wouldn't touch my PSP if it wasn't for custom firmware. Heck I might even have gotten rid of it.

Problem, currently on 4.01 M33-2. Anyways I just purchased the 8GB Pro Duo and put it in the PSP fat, the device didn't start up - although I imagined it had a low battery. Plugged it in and the charge light came on but the device still didn't respond. Took out the battery and had only the cable and sure enough it turned on - plugged the battery in while it was on and all was well. However I can't turn the device off after the device is running solely on battery, resulting in repeating the process - any ideas?

Did you use that battery at anytime as a Pandora battery?

Sounds like a Pandora battery in service mode to me. A Pandora won't work properly unless it's being used together with it's matched magic memory stick. You can use the Pandora tools to turn it back into a normal battery that'll work with any memory stick.

Yeah I converted it into a Pandora for CFW, and I formatted the new 8GB stick while it was charged. How do I convert it back to a normal battery then?

Mejilan

Same exact way you converted it to a Pandora to begin with. One of the options in the battery menu is to revert it to a normal battery.

So I have nearly finished installing CFW, but have run into a problem. I am using the instruction from navanman and got everything to work (including the nand dump) up until installing the CFW. When I press X to install it, the PSP flashes a bunch of files, then shuts off (don't know if it is supposed to do that or not). When I try to start it up with the regular battery, the green light comes on, but the screen never comes on and it shuts off after 5 seconds.

Notes:
1) In the Pandora screen (press x to install CFW, etc) it says MB: TA-??
2) I didn't charge the tool battery yet (got excited) and the reg battery is charged enough so that all 3 bars are full (might be less than full, though).

I am currently charging the TOOL battery, but I am worried that I bricked my PSP. Does this sound like something that would happen with an unfull Pandora Battery, or did I brick my PSP? It is a God of War edition, so it may have the newer MB.

tehcnically speaking, yes it's bricked right now, but it should be recoverable. charge the TOOL battery and try again.

Try turning it on with battery removed and on AC power. You may have a new PSP that is Pandora proof.

If he can get to a boot menu using a Pandora battery on the PSP, then he doesn't have a new board. The newer PSP boards won't boot the Pandora IPL at all (the battery still works).

It was the battery! I fully charged it and it installed without a problem. Thanks to navanman for the tutorial and mejilan for the topic.

New question now: I have 3.8, but when I try to do the network update, it tells me I am missing 401.pbp. When I tell it to download the file it gets a ufetch error and doesnt update. Suggestions?

I have a fat PSP that I haven't updated the custom firmware of in a year or two. How do I go about updating the firmware on PSPs these days?

I need some cool reccomendations of things to do with my 4.01 M33-2 PSP Slim.

Egon Spengler MMORPG.

Position two extra long matches perpendicular to the edges of your PSP, and glue them parallel to the top and bottom left corners of the screen. Hold the system vertically, turn it on, and walk around your home or place of business with a look of pensive scientific curiosity.

Works with PS3 remote play! Duct tape two Wii remotes together end to end, make sure the buttons are still accessible, then tie the protruding wrist strap to one end of a 6' USB cable. Plug the cable into the leftmost port on your PS3, then strap the PS3 to your back or tape it securely around your upper body. Make a holster on the side for your Wi remotes with any remaining tape, and shove a 360 power brick on a leash into your back pocket.

download the 4.01 EBOOT.PBP manually, rename it, transfer it to the psp and then update

Thanks for the link! I did what you said, but I put the file in the wrong place. Luckily, it automatically downloaded this time and I got the update.

I also got popsloader enabled (I'm in the process of copying and making eboots from a few PS1 games, so I'll update when I finish), and got gpsp, rin, snes9x. nesterj working. Still working on figuring out picodrive.

My only complaint so far is I don't have a big neough memory card to hold everything!

8 gigs prices are going down. I have 2 4 gig sticks I'm willing to part with. *shrug*

I'm having trouble getting PS1 ISOs converted to eboots. Using RS-GUI popsloader from the OP gives me an error: cygwin1.dll is missing, try reinstalling. I never installed the program, it just runs, so I tried downloading it from different locations and I still get the error.

I also tried using PSX2PSP, but got an error with that as well. Any suggestions?

OH MY i wonder what the problem is, how about getting a clue there
seriously, a google search can take care of that, you just want everything spoon fed to you

How are the read times on 8gb sticks--anyone notice any problems with them?
I've had no problems with mine. Played GoW and FF7:CC both on it, no hitches, FFIX plays fine, and Cave Story as well (should be expected though).

Runs quite nicely, only lag I notice compared to my 2GB is when going into the games menu to pick a game, takes a little bit for it to complete the list but that is to be expected when you have over a dozen titles on it.

Thanks for all the help.

I fixed the DLL problem, but I am now getting a new error: application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142).

Edit: Got it to work. The .dll files need to be in the "data" for RS-GUI.

I found Impaler's eboot creator and used that with no problems. It looks like it is locked up while creating the file, but when it finishes, the files seem to work fine, so I am going to keep using it.

I just thought I'd give back to this thread, so here it is:

How to play your PSX games on your PSP - hopefully idiotproof Mac version

What you need:
  • A Mac with at least 2GB of free space.
  • A PSP with custom firmware (and plenty of free space on its Memstick).
  • An USB cable to connect the PSP to the Mac.
  • An internet connection (or other ways to acquire the programs mentioned below).
  • At least one Playstation 1 game disk.

A friendly warning:
If you are ripping a game that spans more than one disk, be very careful that your "Game Name" and "Game ID" are exactly the same for all the disks. You need to be able to transfer your save data between them, and that only works if they are identical. I haven't tried it yet, but that's what I've heard.

Also, if you already have an image file of your PSX game
(yarrrrr?)
, skip ahead to part two.

.

Part one: Ripping the PS1 game

Step one:
Download libusb and Prometeus Pro 0.10.1. Yes, the latter claims it's only a Demo, but aside from a nagscreen and a pretty harmless restriction it's full-featured. Beats me why the dev even bothered with it. Then again, he seems to have a rather peculiar taste in UI design so maybe that's just the way he does things.

Step two:
Unpack the libusb archive and install the package.
Unpack the Prometeus Pro archive and drag the application to wherever you want.
Start Prometeus Pro and click on the highlighted areas.
24eq6io.png

Step three:
This will bring us to a fairly cluttered screen. Don't be afraid, it just looks scary. For now, all we do is insert the PSX game disc into your Macs' CD/DVD drive, and after that press...
2wncj8g.png

...the "Rip" button in the upper right corner. Choose a name and place to save the files.

Step four:
Wait.
Twiddle your thumbs while the orange Memstick-access light blinks merrily.
xbydtj.png

When it's done it pops up a dialogue.
16a6uyv.png

It's safe to click OK, but when in doubt, reference the game disk/packaging/specialized websites and check if the program guessed correctly.
23rmjqq.png

Congratulations, you have successfully ripped a PSX game!

.

Part two: Converting the PSX image

( If you've obtained your image from other sources, use the "Open" button above the Rip button and check if the program guessed the Game ID correctly. )

Step five:
Customize that image. The default icon and background are ugly as sin and shouldn't really be used if you value your eyes.
You need at least:
A) one icon file (PNG, 144x80 pixel) that represents the game
B) one background image (PNG, 480x272 pixel) that is shown when the game is selected
C) one title image (PNG, 310x180 pixel) that is shown in the lower right corner - I use a blank if I don't have a good one handy
Notice how the PSP preview below changes according to your choices.
2hgg27s.png

All of those images can be found on the net for your convenience.
I'll leave searching for them as an exercise to the reader (Hint: OP!).
Of course you're free to fiddle with animations and background music, but in the beginning you should just concentrate on the basics. So just leave the other text fields alone for now.

Step six:
If you want to save the files we're gonna install on our PSP somewhere else, choose "Save" and select another location.
Unless your game is a PAL game (Europe) uncheck the "PAL->NTSC" checkbox at the bottom, near the Start button.
10dxkly.png

Step seven:
Connect your PSP to the Mac.
On the PSP, go into USB mode (Press left until you arrive at "Settings", then choose "USB connection").
Press Start in Prometheus Pro.
Wait for the blinking to stop.
xbydtj.png

Step eight:
Copy the whole folder that Prometheus Pro just created to your PSP into the /PSP/GAME folder.
mmps0x.png

Congratulations, we're DONE.
Don't forget unmounting the PSP before disconnecting it, and enjoy the nostalgia. :D

How do you convert Quicktime files into a file playable on the PSP?

PSP video 9 does NOT work.
It should work, just make sure it isnt making an mkv file. For some reason it does that by default instead of an mp4.

I played it a bit on my PSP a while back, don't remeber having too much trouble with it. There were occasional slowdowns due to mode 7 effects, but it ran at 60 fps the majority of the time. I only played through the first few dungeons though.

Just wanted to update. I've played a bit now and the only slowdown that has bothered me is in the southern ruins due to a fog overlay. Everything else is good, but not great.

Has anyone played FF Tactics: WotL? I've heard there is some slowdown and that I should consider playing the PS1 version instead, but I'm wondering if playing from a memory card instead of the UMD helps the slowdown at all.

Mejilan

FFT PSP is a pretty janky port. Borked music, slowdown during spells or similar scenes with special effects, etc. CFW helps, but doesn't solve the problem completely.

Still, the PSP version does have exclusive content (new quests, loot, and playable/recruitable characters) and a truly WICKED new translation. The original's translation is kinda shitty.
