PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I had forgotten the new cutscenes.
But yes, despite the relative jankiness of the port, I consider the PSP version to be the definitive one. Unlike say, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.

Really? The original PS1 version is better than Lenneth? How come?

Way better graphics, better framerate (actually important, since it's an action-based game to a degree), improved interface, bug fixes, and significantly better (though less) cutscenes. Anime > cheap CG

What's annoying about the PSP game is that it's based on the original JP PSOne original, instead of the US PSOne version, which featured the aforementioned bug fixes and interface improvements.

About the only thing going for the PSP version is availability and price, and both are pointless for those of us that already have the PSOne game (or, as in my case, both).

Ah ok, now that you mention it I remember hearing this stuff before. Good ol' SE, porting the inferior version over... Clever!

Actually, I believe TOSE handled the PSP ports of Valkyrie Profile and Final Fantasy Tactics, IIRC.

They also did the FFIV-VI GBA ports, to name a few more.

Has anyone had problems downloading things to their PSP from the PC store, with 4.01 m33? I wanted to get HSG today (Which I'd bought previously), but when I tried to download with the download manager it said I need an update on the PSP software.

If I download to PS3 and sync it's fine (Have done it recently with Wild Arms). Anyone have the same problem?

Possibly the store itself requires the latest firmware (as the PS3 does), but the game package itself was probably authored with a lower firmware requirement in mind?

Hey guys, I've finally received my white PSP slim (well, not that white, I was surprised to see a Dark Vador on it :lol).

Unfortunately (or not ?), it's a 3.73 firmware. I've read that I can only enjoy what this thread is for with a 3.60 at max.

Question : am I fucked ?

There are PSP Slims (2000s) out there with new, Pandora-proof (for now) motherboards.
Presumably, the PSP 3000s will be as Pandora-proof, if not more so. At least initially.

DieH@rd said:
I heard somewhere that latest versions of slim PSP can not be downgraded by Pandora.

Is that bullshit?

The very latest motherboard introduced for the PSP-2000 is modified so that the code run via the Pandora hack must be signed by Sony, thereby preventing D_A's downgrader from being executed.

So far, as much as I know, there's been no progress on finding a new way to hack these PSPs, though I'm definitely hopeful that somethng will come along.

It's only a matter of time. Though it may require returning the older, cruder methods, such as causing select games to initiate some kind of buffer overflow using modified save files.

I don't think there's much interest in cracking the new 2000s, but that should change dramatically once the 3000s hit.

I'm in 4.01 M33-2.

I've bought Beats on the PS Store.

Now I want to download my game but the store says my PSP needs an update. è_é

I think the PSN Store requires the PSP to have the newest firmware. Seems like it's the same with the PS3. If you a PS3, download it through there and transfer it over.

The PC Store won't allow you to download it to your HDD and transfer it over to your PSP via USB?

Anyone have problems with HUE on 4.01M33-2 with an original model PSP? Just seems to hard lock after a minute or so.

Alternatively: suggest another good PCE emulator!

No, my PSP has to be plugged and in USB mode.

I've just read that the PSP should be in 4.05 or newer. :'(

I think that there are homebrew apps out there that spoof the firmware version number. If the PSN Store does no more than do a simple numerical check, then the spoofer should do the trick.

I cannot tell you how much I wish that one existed. AT least, as far as CD support goes.
Well, I remember to play Rondo Of Blood emulated in my PSP sucessfully (not the PSP Castlevania game).

The musics didn't work but I think it was because I didn't ripped well the CD tracks.

BTW there is a good MAME or recent PSPUAE version? Last time I checked them it was a long time ago and were so preliminary versions.

There were two, that I know of, and they haven't been updated in years. Both had pretty janky CD support though. Even if you could manage to get the music to play (they were very finnicky in the types of MP3 encodes they supported), the music wouldn't loop. Fuck that.

returning to such methods would suck and pretty much kill my interest in getting a 3000.

It would only be required for the initial cracking. Once that's done, patching in Pandora IPL support probably wouldn't be too difficult.

PSPUAE is on version 0.72 and they are using save states in order to load games faster, but for my own experience it really doesn't work. The sound is choppy and the games are slow :(

It would only be required for the initial cracking.

Lumines and GTA save hack will be probably still work thougth, I heard that they aren't easily patchable (does that word even exist?)

that would be nice seeing as how i've killed my psp a few times. a fuckup like me needs a fool proof method!

Ahhh, I thought those exploits were fixed long ago... like 3.50 and earlier...?

VSHMenù v6.0 is coming soon!

Version 6.0: Works in Progress (v6 - Lavori in corso...)

English:

After a long period of absence (caused by holidays first and studies later) I came back and I restart to work to Alternative VSHMenù version 6.0. All was ready to be released but I decided to make some change before the release: after all, you're waiting from a month, another week will not kill you :p

The reason of a similar decision is that I discovered that PSP-3000 will have a auto USB connection function and so I decided to give this function to PSP-2000 and PSP-1000 too! B-)

For this reason I restart to work and, to be clear, this will be v6.0 changelog:
Changelog said:
1. Added FIVE new background colours
2. Now Alternative VSHMenù can not be started before of 5 seconds: in this way you can avoid console crashes when you accidentally start it during coldboot or returning from games.
3. Now there will be a pause of about one second when you exit from A. VSHMenù: in this way your choise will not have any effect on XMB (like happened in past).
4. Changed HIDE MAC ADDRESS function in AUTO USB CONNECTION: if you enable it, USB connection will be enable always in XMB! In this way when you connect a USB cable your PSP will be connected to your PC/PS3 without you have to press on special icon! (like in PSP-3000).
5. Changed CXMB PLUGIN function in LANGUAGE: now you can select your language from the menu of A. VSHMenù! In this first version, there will be only two language: Italian and English.
6. Changed M33 VSHMENU in SELECT KEY: now you can choose what to associate to SELECT key in XMB (M33 VSHMenù, a Homebrew, Nothing).
7. Erased all difference of code between CF 3.90/3.95GEN/4.01M33: now plugin will be the same in all CFs.
8. Added a homebrew-flasher for the plugin: it will flash the Alternative VSHMenù in your Flash' without other steps![/code]

Help!
Using PSP Slim with 4.01 M33-2 here, and I was trying to play my original copy of Xenogears (since my ps2 don't want to!), but ran into 2 issues.

1) Whenever I try to use the menu, it locks up as the menu fades after making a selection. It does this even when I try using just the first disc alone.
2) The 2nd disc, when ripping it, reports nothing but errors on the last 5% of the disc, is this normal? (the disc itself is in fine condition, as well as using a newer dvd-rw drive)

So got Yggdra Union and was planning to rip it for mem stick play but... My current USB app doesn't work anymore unless I get the 1.5 kernel on. Whats everyone using to rip UMDs nowadays?

Mejilan

I ripped mine a little while ago. ~750 MBs.
If you have a relatively modern CFW, hit select or the home key (it varies) and switch the USB Mode to the UMD drive. Insert the UMD into the bay, connect a USB cable, enable UMD mode, and drag & drop the ISO to your HDD.

That's crazy. And at the same time so easy.

I didn't know that, thx.

In case anyone's interested, I updated to the latest OFW (4.05) and now can download these things from the PC store just fine - so it seems the latest m33 might not be compatible with that.

Is there a tutorial to load fatmsmod driver for 4.01 M33-2? I've tried searching for tutorials and can't find a single "for idiots" tutorial.

Can anyone provide me some help with this? :(

I remember seeing a program once for the psp that was to protect against theft. If someone stole it and hooked it upto their pc it would e mail you their ip so you could take it to the police.

Does anyone know where i can get this as i always thought it sounded like a good feature but the place i first saw it didnt have it no more.

I got my pandora's battery in the mail yesterday and set it up without ANY problems last night. Huge props to everyone in this thread, particularly Meiji, navanman, and CTLance for the fantastic work!

Quick question, I am getting an error in OS X when I try to connect to the UMD drive via USB. I can connect to my Win XP machine without any issues, and that is how I have been backing up games, but was wondering if anyone knew what the issue might be with OS X... It says something to the effect of "Invalid Drive." Any ideas?

I believe Dragona, (who has a Mac) said that there were issues with enabling UMD USB on a Mac. Not sure it's ever been resolved. You'll have to use something else to dump your UMDs. Check out PSPFiler perhaps? I think the newest version is 5.6...

Thanks Meji, I'll look into it!

Is there any particular homebrew game you recommend? I was psyched to get Cave Story, but all the rest I have are PS1 or emu... Anything else worthwhile?

erm ok

I don't know how I did that but ripping my Fighting Force (PSX) gave me .sub, .cue, .img. and .ccd files.

How do I get an ISO with that ?

edit : solved. MagicISO saved me, I didn't have to rip it again.

Cave Story rocks.

OpenBOR (Beats of Rage) is pretty nifty. And most modules work fine on the PSP.

If you're an Ultima VII fan and still have your discs, you can get U7 Part 1 and U7 Part 2 (plus the expansion pack for each) running on your PSP. Very good stuff.

Stakker is a pretty neat physics-based application.

There are two OK Geometry Wars (Geometry Wars PSP and Polygun Wars) clones out there, but both pale in comparison to the real thing, or Geometry Wars Galaxies for the DS.

I don't think I really have anything else to recommend at the moment, unfortunately.
