The PSP emu scene is AMAZING and it's only just the Japanese guys making stuff so far. There is literally a new emu release every night.

Of course, new PSPs will come with 1.51 at that point ;)
And I won't care, because I'll have my 1.50 machine set aside for a glorious future of emulation :)

I feel so stupid for upgrading. Argh.

Same here! I literally KICKED MY OWN ASS when the first GBC emu came out. >_<

i just installed version 0.42 of the pc-engine emu.
wow it rocks!
thank god for my friend in japan to send me a secondhand psp to me (only 110euro) almost as good as new :)

Oh man, I hope they can crack 1.5. This thing has so much emulation potential. XBOX emulation never did anything simply because I've always had my PC right there with superior emulation...but THIS is entirely different.

how does 1.51 fix the wipeout thing? Does it just stop you creating the save file, or actually blocks the overflow from doing anything?

I don't think anybody's figured out how to exploit the Wipeout thing just yet. It's still a theoretical thing.

I've been following the PSP emu scene loosely, mainly becaused I'm one of the idiots that updated to 1.5. Do any of the emus support sound yet..seems like whenever I read about a new one they all say no sound support yet.

even if there was one, i'd be very nervous using it :P

There won't be one. The firmware update packages need to be encrypted in order to run - since there was never an update to 1.00, there isn't an existing encrypted version of the firmware installer, just the non-encrypted firmware dumped directly from the PSP. So in order to create an installer you'd either need to find out how to encrypt files for execution on PSP or how to run non-encrypted installer files on 1.5+ - either way this means you can already run arbitrary executables on 1.5+, so there's no need to downgrade to 1.00.

Can we have a definitive list of those who haven't upgraded and still own a 1.0 PSP?

I'm considering starting a PSP Emu site and would welcome anyone interested in contributing :)

EDIT: I have one BTW

how about a list of those with 1.0 that aren't interested in emulation and would be willing to swap with the idiots that upgraded because they could do it wirelessly and it was cool (i.e. me)

:lol

I think you 1.5 owners won't have long to wait so I wouldn't worry too much.

I haven't played my PSP since I got it on Japanese launch day but all these emu developments are grabbing my interest again :)

They can put their NES/SNES games on whatever console they choose. (see MM and MMX collection for example)

Edit: They could probably do the same thing for the Play Yan/DS. ;)
They could... but Nintendo seems to have been granted a patent for all game system emulators running on handheld game systems iirc. So like Namco Museum PSP, they'd all need to be recoded probably. :/

No doubt Nintendo plans on running their own Revolution-esqu iGames service for the next Game Boy though. Maybe even on the current GBA/DS through a second generation play-yan as you suggest.

I just wasted half an hour playing Strip Fighter II on the PCE emulator... why, god, why!?
R-Type emulation is stunning, as is Parodius, Puzznic and a few others I tried. Chase HQ didn't seem to work though.

Yes, they support sound. At least the NES one supported it from what I know...
The latest Rin GB/GBC emulator for PSP supports sound and runs at 100% speed if you have V-Sync off. Sometimes V-Sync on will still make the game run at full speed but other times it slows down the sound. If you have V-Sync off and leave "Wait" off, the emulator seems to run games at speeds over 100% @_@

I'll try to take some pics as well later on.

You're keeping the PornStation Portable reality alive! :D

How well does the PCE emulator run? Any framerate/sound problems? Heck, if it works well that's a killer app if I ever saw one.

It's been confirmed that this week's new PSP title, Intelligent License, comes with the obligatory 1.5 patch. Looks like this is the future now.

It looks like 1.0 owners will have to buy a second PSP just to play any new games released until a workaround is achieved

I have a 1.0 jp unit.

That raises another issue, as they'll need to actually come out with games good enough to make people feel like they need to purchase another PSP. For me, there's nothing on the horizon until Core Crisis that even makes me consider it.

What about Tenchi no Mon? ~_~

They have to play this game carefully. They are still losing a lot on PSPs, and they have a good tie ratio. Locking out people too aggressively can affect both of those things in a negative way for Sony.

And why do they care if you can play emulators? As long as you don't play pirate games..

I will tell you why Sony wants nothing to do with this.

It is VERY easy for a malicious coder to FUCK UP your firmware and turn your PSP into a doorstop.

Some of the Japanese homebrew boards have been talking about this a lot and the ramifications of a PSP "virus."

It's true that you are leaving yourself open to this kind of attack, but is anyone going to be brave enough to screw up their own 1.0 PSP just so they know it works, before unleashing it on an audience of board-goers? And could a firmware attack totally kill your PSP? Is there no way to overwrite it with a real patch?

And no, Tenchi no Mon is not enough to make me buy a new PSP :/

You'd test it out on your "friend's" PSP first, I imagine ;) There is a PSP emulator available as well for non-native testing.

Also, yes, wiped firmware would render your PSP unusable, I believe the entire OS is in firmware (could someone correct me if I'm wrong?).

My god, I leave home with a GB emulator and some roms and one week after I find this... I would die in happiness, but I will wait to test it a little.

Fortunately, given what Sony has shows at E3, I can wait a lot to buy another PSP. About the "Virus", well, I would risk himself, it´s too good to be true.

OH-MY-GOD!!!

Serioulsy, this is beyond fantastic: r-type at full screen, with sound and a very nice framerate. Thank you Sony!

A new horizon in gaming indeed.

(Sorry for the crappy picture, the light wasn´t the best one, but it looks stunning through PSP screen).

Do you have a link to this? Isn't there a large collection of prior art, from homebrews to Digital Eclipse's GBC games?
