PSP software CES screen orgasm (56k, run for your life. Seriously.)

I could care less who explodes, and if it's for my status, it's a freaking tag. And I haven't seen anything official about it, this is why I question the lock out.

There's been several statements (apparently) from Sony representatives stating no region lock out for games; only for movies, but I would take that with a grain of salt until it's been confirmed that people are playing U.S. games on their Japanese PSP systems and visa versa. Some of the Japanese games even have a "Region 2" label on them as well. I'm not disputing the Sony statements; just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if something changes before the system comes out in the U.S. and Europe.

EDIT: Notice that in the guy-who-thinks-Soul Calibur-was-a "genre redfining"-game's post, Masa Chatani even says they've decided to make games region free "FOR NOW."

Well excuse me for not being up to date! I hardly ever go to gaming websites anymore, I only usually visit GAF, I saw a thread and asked a question, no need to act like a jack ass.

*head explodes*

But seriously. Nobody would explode because your "tag" is "Junior Member." They'd explode because this question was asked one billion times before.

Source2: Sony Chief Technology Officer Masa Chatani

Source3: Digital Backspin
Source4: Molly Smith of SCE of America/Ars Technica

Source5: Gamesradar
Source6: Tiscalo.co.uk on what SCEE said about Region lock

See... plenty of official commentary :)

How'd you type up that reply and find all those quotes in around 2 mins?

Didn't you see the "but seriously" and the "smiley face"? I was just joshin' you...

I just pasted the reply I made on the subject from another thread. I've had this discussion many, many times before ;)

Thanks, this is the type of response I was looking for. I was confused on the subject, which is why I asked. I think I might just buy Lumines and if it doesn't play on a US system I'll end up getting a JP system down the road.

Launch lineup is pretty blah unless you're an EA fanboy. I will get Ridge Racer at launch I guess and follow that up with Twisted Metal, Hot Shots Golf, and Wipeout when they are released. I guess the DS and PSP have one thing in common, their launch lineups pretty much suck except for one or two games.

these games look alright, nothing exciting except for Ridge Racers and Wipeout (if they improve the Frame rate).

PSP needs RPGs and strategy games (FFT).

Makai Wars is coming for your strategy RPG game quota.

Also, I wouldn't mind FFT PSP.

As long as it was nothing like FFTA.

It's already got several RPGs (on the way) in Japan and there's Makai Wars and Metal Gear Ac!d for strategy games.

There's a Tales game from Namco in the works, too. And Popolcris (sp) from Sony.

Amir0x said:
But what are the chances Popolocrosisisisisi (:lol) will ever come to the US ;)

Probably the same chance of you ever answering my Soul Calibur question. :lol (Sorry, couldn't resist...I'll lay off it now!)

Most of the franchise titles on the PSP are reworked heavily enough from the originals that they're not really ports, save for Darkstalkers and the EA titles really.

RPGs

Popolocrois Monogatari (I+II) (SCEJ?)
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy (Square)
Gagharv: Legend of Heroes III (Bandai?)
Makkai Wars (Nippon-ichi)
Tales of Eternia (Namco)
Ys (Konami)
TBD Level-5 RPG (Dark Cloud 3???) (Lv-5)

unknown:
Project Melfes (Namco)

Popolocrois Monogatar (I+II) (SCEJ?)
Never heard of it.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy (Square)
2006!

Gagharv: Legend of Heroes III (Bandai?)
Heard it sucks

Makkai Wars (Nippon-ichi)

Tales of Eternia (Namco)

Ys (Konami)

TBD Level-5 RPG (Dark Cloud 3???) (Lv-5)

You know Disgaea and La Pucelle and Phantom Brave? Well Makai Wars is gonna be like those. Except on PSP.

??? indeed. They just have a teaser poster for it...

It’s the big boring launch line-up argument again.
Great.

Any screens yet?

The level 5 game could be for PS2. I like Level 5, Dark Cloud 2 rocks, I am playing it right now :D

No it couldn't be. It specifically says it's for PSP :P

Isn't it the new Tales of announced a while ago?

That stems from the aspect ratio of the promo movie and magic-box's mis-information.

No platform was ever announced. And the official screen's aspect ratio is changed.

So who knows.
Didn't stop alot of site from listing it as a PSP title still, though.

We're talking console-to-console. We're talking just coming from PSX/N64 era. The leap between the two are amazing. And this sort of arcade-perfect port of an already stellar fighting game was frankly unheard of, and it advanced the genre greatly.

No, Soul Calibur was *better* than the arcade! I still think you're overrating it's innovation, though, because there's not a lot of fundamental things there that Soul Edge didn't offer besides the graphics (which were impressive on PSX at the time... I remember being wowed by the polygon grass. hahaha.).

Mercury's gameplay is noteworthy not because of some gimmicky tilt sensor which it is supposedly going to include. It's noteworthy because of the interesting affect the world has on the way you must navigate your blob through the maze. As a piece of liquid mercury you'll be constantly glopping apart and be forced to navigate multiple blobs or to change color of your blobs to do all sorts of crazy things. The gameplay is deceptively simple at first, but it reveals a much different thing then we have seen from this sort of game.

Lumines, well, it's different because of two reasons. One, this is a puzzle game built around a widescreen format so the puzzle field is widescreen length, which causes most gamers to have to rethink how they usually approach the game. Two, it's not as simple as just placing blocks together and them automatically clearing like in most games. This time you have to work with a scanline which clears the cubes you made, dynamically changing the music. The interest dynamic here is that you often must race against the scanline to place a block down to make something good happen. So this changes the way you play a puzzle game in many ways.

Forgive me for not being impressed by these "innovations".

They have a game for PSP AND a game for PS2 in development. The Next RPG artwork on their site belongs most likely to the PS2 one. (Dark Cloud 3?)

No, in a recent interview/article in Famitsu, it was brought up that Lv-5 is working on an unknown RPG for the PSP, AND one for the PS2. Also that TFOL may be revivied.

God I love Dark Cloud 2, the game is fucking huge and theres so much to do. I love it, it requires a lot of time though and I don't like randomly generated dungeons. I hope their games don't have Randonly generated dungeons.

Its weird, just because the games are for the PSP I'm expecting a lot more graphically. The FPS game does look amazing though.

Some other RPG's, ARPG's and Strat RPG's for the PSP:

Untitled Konami SRPG
Princess Crown
Kings Field
Sony's MMORPG

And best of all

PERSONA!!!

stick with DS.

I'm a multi-console gamer and quite proud of it. I expect to enjoy plenty of PSP games, but I sure don't expect those games to come from Sony and EA.

When we see more from Konami, Capcom, etc... there will be reason to be excited.

Sony makes good games and so does EA but their support so far has been somewhat poor. Naughty Dog, Insomniac or the Sly Cooper guys can easily make a good platformer for PSP but they haven't.

Criterion was going to do Burnout PSP but they were bought by EA and are probably busy making Burnout 4.

I am also surprised by the lack of Square Enix support.

I give this lineup a 6/10 :/

Makai Wars is (supposedly) a direct sequel to Disgaea.

IIRC, I think that's based soley on the fact that Pinnies were seen in the game. I dont' recall where I read this though, can't seem to find the article at ign/gamespot or 1up, though I'm sure I read it in one of that site. Anyways, since Phantom Kingdom also has Pinnies, looks more too me like they're just turning it into a company mascot.

That's the thing... All this PSP crap looks to me like rehashes of games that were cool enough on PS1, but were already rehashed for their PS2 incarnation.

If all the top dev. houses focus on next-gen, PSP could quickly become Rehash central.

it's based on the fact that the full title of Disgaea in japan was "Makai senki Disgaea", which lead people to believe that "Makai Wars" was either a sequel on a spin-off.

Yes, most of it looks like crap. But there are a few good games like Ridge Racers and maybe Wipeout Pure if they increase the frame rate.

Some of these games don't seem at home on a handheld. More pick-up-and-play games, and less porting every console franchise there is, please.
