Queen Elizabeth II has passed away

It should probably be noted that the Queen kept out of politics and world events publically. In private, she had many opinions, and had great influence on the actions of some of her prime ministers. I fully expect Charles to be the same. He’ll retain her level of public silence, but I fully expect him to use his position to forward his own beliefs in private.
Indeed good point. He will use his influence just as she did.

I have a question to our Brit mates:
The Queen was an amazing leader. Humble, serious, she opened her mouth when needed, not to say dumbshit. Basically, she was not like the 90% of politician leaders(clowns)
But How well does the new king measure up to the former Queen?
Time will tell but its a tough act to follow.

Can't wait for my tax to pay for the funeral and crowning of the new king.........at least my utility bills arent triple what they use to be......oh wait.

Don’t worry it isn’t a long wait. The most watched event in world history will be televised in a matter of days.

You could save a few quid on electricity by not watching it of course.

The King’s speech was extremely good. Excellent words, timbre and tone. With the shaking of hands with the crowd earlier and this, he’s starting his reign well. Hopefully it will be the making of him. His mother certainly set him up for it.

I have never been a big fan of his but I choked up a little bit with my English bubbles. The message of him committing the rest of his years for service - with no retirement, no privacy, no free life ever again, until the day he dies.

I've never understood the hate for Charles. I have zero interest in royalty but he's always struck me as a genuinely decent guy. Same goes for the old Queen at that.

My own country lived under Danish colonialism. We still make jabs at the Danish but it's never been as ill hearted as I've seen on the Internet in the past two days.

Think it stems back to his treatment of Diana and still carrying on with Camilla while they were married.

Diana’s quote of ‘there were three of us in this marriage’ for example.

Rest in peace. She seemed to be a good person and did well with what she was tasked to do. You can feel the significance of her passing, and all that she represents and has been witness to. It feels what can only be described as history turning a page. A brief moment to reflect.

The Crown generates way more money than they cost to the taxpayers. Isn't their royal pension a deal to allow the state to use their properties and land and pay their upkeep?

This is what I found:

If you thought you had a big backyard, think again. Queen Elizabeth II holds title to roughly 6.6 billion acres of land throughout the world. For reference, that’s about one-sixth of the land on the entire planet. Most of the land falls under the Crown Estate, which essentially operates as a real estate business. According to The Independent, all of the profits of the Crown Estate go to the United Kingdom’s Treasury, but it should be noted that the queen receives 15% of those profits. (Real estate has played a major role in the royal family’s net worth.) In the U.K., the queen’s real estate operations hold more than $16 billion in property. This includes many of the royal family’s residences, including Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, and Windsor Castle.

My word. This is the sort of uninformed hot take I'd expect to see on Twitter.

Your tax payments aren't going to increase because of this and it has no relation to the current cost of energy.

If Henry 6 can do it at 8 months old then William can do it at 40 years

It’s not about whether they can become king, it’s about whether they should.

Henry the 6th only became king at that age, because there was no other choice.

My point is why would Charles abdicate for William, and ruin his life? What possible good reason would there be?

May gave out a good speech. This is especially apparent when you aren't from UK. From where i am from (Dutch), she is remembered as looking grumpy.

But looking grumpy doesn't land you the immense popularity or endurance Elizabeth II did get. So instead by comparison for me to understand, she was to UK what our former Queen Beatrix is to the Netherlands. Loved and cherished, a constant flow in a river that sometimes dries up and then ignites rapidly.

And by that comparison it is easier to understand why Elizabeth II was so adored. Because she was always there. People find shelter and faith in things (people/buildings/deities/statues) that are consistent and don't change opinion or form, atleast to the public eye.

Elizabeth II set out to do just that: Being timeless in a everchanging timeline.

She achieved it.

Charles won't abdicate. This is his destiny as rightful heir and what God put him on the world to be. And he fucking loves it. Doubt the wellbeing of William factors in much.

I doubt Charles believes the old line that its a "divine right". I could see him enjoying the seat for a bit and then abdicating due to health in the near future.

Not everyone is made of the Iron that the Queen was. Not everyone is able to be in such a position until death.

No one has abdicated for health reasons before so I don't see it happening any time soon. Charles will be king until he dies and then it will be William. That's just how it goes.

You are probably right.

I'm just saying I also wouldn't be surprised if it happened the way I mentioned.

Of course he believes it. There's a reason heirs behave very differently to their siblings who almost get a blank cheque to live the life of millionaire luxury with very few of the drawbacks. They are groomed into it from when they're born that the overwhelming weight of duty and responsibility will fall on them. Charles has been thinking he's all powerful king since before his mum even had a walking stick by trying to exert himself with various governments. Its absolutely his belief he was born to rule, because that is the truth.

Whether he abdicates and uses health, or anything else, as an excuse is neither here nor there. There's no evidence we have that points to him just not wanting to do it.

Agree to disagree. I don't think any sane person in the modern age is deluded and ignorant enough to believe in a "divine right" to rule.

And Charles does not strike me as crazy.

Why are you bringing stuff like the modern age into a discussion about the royal family? The fact that they are put here by God to rule the subjects is their entire reason for existing.

Amazing how so many modern Australians, usually of 1st and 2nd generation immigrant stock, want to ditch the Monarchy for a Republic, a system of Government that so many of their parents/Grand Parents left their countries of origin for because things were so shit under it and Australia seemed like the promised land....
Mate, I doubt they went to Australia because it was ruled by the King/Queen and not a Republic. Otherwise they would be in the United Kingdom, right?

They obviously went there because of dingos and kangurus are superior to foxes and deers.

He's not really kidding. The royal family being ordained by god is technically part of the "lore" of the British monarchy. As well as being the head of state the British monarch is also head of the Anglican church. And I believe "by the grace of god" is technically part of the monarch's full title. You dig into an old institution like that and there's some weird shit still buried in there.

Less than 2 days before her passing she welcomed in our new PM which shows her complete dedication and servitude for the country. A rare role model that carried out her duties in a way that almost doesn't exist anymore in sea of pretenders. Many won't understand why so many people care, but to quite a sizeable amount of people, the nation state and an identity tied to a nation that tries to do the right thing by people still matters. As does history.

She's been a grandmother of sorts to all, a calming influence and figurehead of stability through wars, economic and social crisis. Whilst the world and culture has changed so much, she's served as a reminder of the values of the old world that are still so relevant today. Duty, dignity, integrity and family. Rest in peace.

What really pisses me off about this is her final PM she saw through is a complete cock womble, and her speech of the queen after the passing was an absolute shit show, and you can see why after looking at her history... Where as Boris' was truly heart felt

We are truly doomed as a nation.

This is not a popularity contest, that would be opposite of that Elizabeth stood for. William is much less experienced and qualified to be king than Charles is.

No I understand that at one time that was the dogma and the party line.

I'm saying that no sane human being in the modern age would believe that it's real. Anyone who is even slightly educated knows that the royal families of the world got to where they were by a combination of luck, wealth, and politics. The current English royal family is no different.

There is not a single solitary chance in hell that Charles actually believes that he has some divine right to rule. He has never struck me as a zealot or an idiot.
