Quick Hot Shots Golf Impressions (PSP)

is Fore! worth $20?
I had way too much fun with 3, but i'd like to see how Fore! faired. oh well, im getting psp version soon, so i guess it'd be kinda dumb to have the same game, essentially, twice.

No, Fore was garbage. Fore is also a lot different in my opinion to Open Tee.

The more HSG OT I'm playing, the more I love. Its quickly edging out Dynasty Warriors as my favorite PSP game. I'll never get around to finishing everything for Ridge Racer now.

PSP HSG is pretty much identical to the JP version, but with English voices. Same characters, costumes, and caddies.
Seriously? You mean they FINALLY left it alone instead of ruining it with those retarded stereotype characters?

There aren't many caddies at all, BTW. Don't look forward to them.

I'm about 99% through everything this game has to offer -- over 50 hours' worth, easily. It's a great game, definitely one of the PSP's best so far.

Shit, I keep forgetting PSP has no territorial lock-out on its games. I was sweating the character redesigns for nothing. Here I come, PSP!

...After one expensive-ass trip to E3.

Edit: The redesigns were half of my annoyance. The voice acting is the other half. Someone please tell me it's not as grating as HSG3 (the last in the series I played).

I have and love the Japanese version. But can someone explain the spin to me? It seems like simple d-pad movements, but I think pressing up or down multiple times depending on where you are in the swing motion affects things. So I'd appreciate some clarity

Something along the lines of: Hold opposite of the direction you'd like to hit as you start the meter, then let go after you decided how much power. Next, hold the direction you want hit towards when you're hitting your sweet spot. Basically Up/Down for back spin, Up/down for top spin then Left/Right or vice versa for side spins.

Retarded question: when do you want to add spin?

Also, did they change the "watching the other dudes" part from the Japanese version? Because I always have to watch those wankers take their shot in challenge mode. Zzz.

I usually use sidespins for getting around some obstacles or terrain. While top spins just help assist my drive and finally back spins for landing on the green or pin.

Kiryogi touched on the general applications, but choosing when to use spins is almost entirely situational; lie of the ball, bypassing obstructions, wind velocity, or just cranking a bit of extra rolling distance off the tee.

The real crazy stuff(mostly involving miraculous 'reverse' chip-ins) take practice and foresight planning, I also believe it may require special clubs. None of this is very complex to feel out once you get the d-pad rhythms down, it's a neat added layer to the tap-tap swinging. (All based on HSG3 experience mind you)

Anybody know if there is a way to pull the flag when you're not on the green? I've chipped in twice now unbelievable shots (at least, for me, they were) and they both bounced off the pole. Kills me!

Otherwise, so fun.

You can't, those are the rules of golf. Actually, the pin almost always helps you - if you hit it so hard that it bounces off the pin, then it almost certainly would have rolled through the hole without it.

Clap Hanz took over for Hot Shots 2. I think that MG64 and HSG2 came out about the same time, if I remember.
Also, Clap Hanz was started up by a few former Camelot staff who SCEI hired away after the split. Clap Hanz is an internal SCEI team iirc.

Ok, you guys have me really wanting to run out and get this game. I've played Hot Shots before and always enjoyed it, but I've been playing Tiger Woods over the past few years. Tiger is good, but they haven't really changed up the game mechanics any, so once you get your golfer built up, it's so easy to play. I'm going to have to run to the store over the weekend to get this one. :)

Yes, each time you go up a rank (earned by getting stars) you have a chance to challange one person in vs mode. I'm up to up to mid-rank (lvl 4) and have 5 golfers now. As a side note other than getting the msg "super win" in the box after you beat them by 3 strokes + do you get anything else? The scroll msg says you might receive something surprising or something if you do... i never did heh.

Does the PSP version have multiplayer on the one PSP? Eg, taking turns passing the machine around?

No it's either single player or multi-player ad-hoc i believe. I was pretty surprised myself that you could only load 1 profile at a time. I'm actually gonna back up my save file for this game since it autosaves so much and i know one of these days i'm gonna accidentally erase my game lol.

One other question if anyone knows, what exactly does your HSG rank do? I know your overall level is decided by stars but the rank looks pretty pointless.

For those of you who haven't picked it up yet, but plan on doing so... Strawberries has the game for $30 USD after mail-in-rebate. A real steal for a game soooo fucking good.

Strawberries? That doesn't sound like a place to carry electronic equipment! :lol

I've been playing Hot Shots Golf 3 the past couple weeks getting ready (Skipped Fore! for the psp version)! :D Going to go pick up Open Tee tonight!

Yeah, Strawberries started out as a music retail chain, but now sells both DVD movies and videogames. There were mail-in-rebates for a number of PSP games, including a $20 USD mir for Ape Escape PSP.

Huh, so that's how spinning works. I need to try that out some. I skimmed the booklet last night around 3:15am, but obviously I don't remember too much about it. Too tired.

Putting's not QUITE as hard as this thread led me to believe, but it (and the game) is definitely harder than the Mario Golfs. Of course, I was using spins in the MGs, so learning the HSG mechanic will certainly make a difference.

Fucking awesome game so far, by far my favorite on the PSP. Ok, well, after Lumines...

I haven't done the challenges yet, I've just been practicing my game by doing Stroke Mode on the first course, the Alps. I've managed to beat the default records for 9-in, 9-out, and 18 on my first attempt at each. About ready for challenges, I think.

I highly recommend the purchase, so far.

I'm Lovin It like McDonalds. I think I finished about 10 or so of the challenges. I think in a way it is slightly easier than HSG4 for making perfect shots. For some reason, it was tough for me to get a perfect shot where I can bust them out all the time for Open Tee.

The urge to go buy the game right now is incredibly strong, but I'm saving it for my long-ass E3 flight/connection/flight.

Putting's not tough at all on the early courses. Wait until you unlock Courses 5 and 6.

I just got it. Nice little game. Not that different from it's big brothers.

For someone who's played HS1 (skipped 2), HS3 quite a bit and a little bit of 4, is there any reason to read the manual?

Alright, I'm on my 7th challenge now. I've unlocked a new ball, a couple of accessories and outfits. Beat 3 tourneys and 3 one-on-one matches, so I'm getting there. No new characters or courses yet. I like the feel of Mario Golf better, if you know what I mean. Just the satisfaction of the controls, and look of the special effects, the sound effects for the various types of shots and effects, etc. Not by much, and it's by no means a big deal. HSG, so far, is definitely a VERY close second in that sense.

But I am digging the main game mode (Challenge) in HSG a LOT more than the single player in MG:TT. I've still barely touched it, I realize, but only time will tell if it can match up to the g-dly MG GBC and MG GBA, however!

Freakin' awesome game, regardless.

Edit - Regarding the various one-on-one matches. Is there only 1 base model each for male and female characters? WTF? Hell, I'd take generic, but different chars over these "unique" but cloned chars any day! :( I'm on my 4th one-on-one and all of the challengers look identical!

I don't think the loading is that bad. I like that everything moves super smoothly once you're in the game. You can rip through a game.

Meij: You just haven't unlocked any characters yet. You won't be able to do that until you level up in the next group of challenges. That's why all the characters you've been playing have been the same :).

I don't like how long it takes to unlock stuff but I'm havin' a fucking blast.

Thanks!

I just got HSG Rank 5, Beginner level with my main character, and Loyalty 4. Unlocked the next course too. Fantastic. Batts are dying, so it's a good point to call it a night.

Played a total of like 3.5 - 4 hours of this, great stuff. :)

Picked this up today, and while I felt a little doubtful about it at first, after going through some putting challenges and a tournament, I'm liking it a lot. This is the first golf video game I've played for any decent amount of time (since my friend's copy of Awesome Golf on Lynx, I'd imagine). I'm getting into the controls pretty well, and the difficulty doesn't seem too steep to start. The characters and animations are adorable, and the English voicework isn't bad at all. I really like the presentation (menus, graphic style, music), too - there's something to be said for enthusiastic, polished blandness. :)

Got this yesterday. Havent played a HSG since the first one on PSOne, I migrated to Mario Golf with Camelot.

Like the game, although I suck at putting. I did get the approach shot of doom though. It just popped up from the bunker, then right down into the hole. Eagle baby. Was sweet.

Figured this out what you get for winning vs mode matches with called game for anyone curious. If you do beat char X with with a called game char X's 5th loyalty heart becomes unlocked. 99% that's it cause i beat CJ without a called game then went back later and beat him with a called game and that 5th heart showed up (i'd beaten the previous chars with cgs).

I two have a quick questions:

Do your raised stats go towards your profile as a whole (and thus every player), or just the specific player you happen to win a tournament with?

Also, will it be possible to completely max out loyalty for every single character? Or, do you run out of tourny's etc. in Challenge mode to play with other characters to build em up?

Picked up this game yesterday and i've been playing it to death since. Very easy to learn and get playing, but plenty of depth and challenge to keep you going. I haven't opened any new courses yet, so my main gripe so far is that I only have one course to play on. Aside from that, this is one fun, addictive game that looks great on the PSP.

Good lord got up to bronze level (7) and that 5th course is absolute murder. That plus the frequency of "miracle" shots by the computer has risen dramatically these last 2 levels. Pretty sure these last 3 levels are going to make HSG go from "fun" to "controller breaking" lol. Don't mind the raise in difficulty but there's still 2 more degrees of difficulty heh.

They go to your profile as a whole.

It's possible, you shouldn't need to but you can go back and replay tournaments/matches labeled Open XXX
