Rap is black music, but Eminem does it better than black artists according to 50cent

I mean, rock was black music too, but 4 pasty white British dudes did it better than anyone else. No one can touch black R&B singers though, especially the women.

John Lennon is scum.

If you ask randoms (non-hip hop fans)what is Illmatic, nobody will know. I'd even say they probably haven't even heard of Nas. Slim Shady, on the other hand...

Illmatic may have had a huge impact on hip hop/black communities, but SSLP impacted the entire music industry. Micro vs. macro.

Denying this is fooling yourself.

Not really a great argument.

What Em did on the SSLP was what Ice Cube did better in 91 and 92.

Then what is? To me it just looks like black people (or African-Americans, w/e) are just salty that a white people beat them at their own game/"their" music genre. That white people could finally relate to hip hop. Pop, Rock, Metal, Punk fans became Eminem fans because they could relate to his music. Hip hop never had that reach before Eminem.

Lol

Who cares if white people started liking rap because of Em's nursery rhymes

A lot of that is just because he was white. Eminem didn't really innovate hip hop, he was just able to sell it to a new demographic.

Like, at the end of the day Em is 50's boy. You really think 50 wouldnt boost the fuck out of Em? That he'd be humble and say, " you know, even though Em is one of my best friends who helped launch my career, and he sold the most amount of records in the 2000's, my business-minded self thinks that he's not the best rapper ever"

So this is about album sales and not about music.

I guess Velvet Underground is worse than Katy Perry then.

So hip-hop and all other genres are only good if white people like it? In other words, Black people can't have shit.

The Slim Shady LP is better than everything Nas has done, except maybe illmatic, maybe.

White America can relate to munchausen syndrome and killing your wife?

They could relate to his music because he is white, and they couldn't do so before? what?

You sound young..
White people couldn't relate to rap before Eminem? lol
And it's only Monday! lol..

I'm white, love hip hop and I don't like Eminem. Not denying his talent for rap, I just don't like his tracks and the way he sounds.

A new demographic?

Eminem sold albums to white kids just like NWA sold albums to white kids. White folks have been listening to hip-hop since the 80s

There aren't many rappers in the history of the game that can trade bars with Em...lyrically I think only Biggie and Prime Nas were the only cats that could be argued as better than prime Em...and even that's a reach.

Kendrick Lamar has a lot of Eminem in him...he's like a mix of Em, Tupac and Biggie now that I think about it.

Pre Eminem, white people were definitely fucking with Dre, Snoop, Pac,and Biggie based on album sales from those dudes.

Between this and the Serena Williams thread, I am having a fucking ball today.

To some people, Katy Perry is indeed better than Velvet. Besides, you are comparing two different genres, so not really appropriate comparison.

A lot of that is just because he was white. Eminem didn't really innovate hip hop, he was just able to sell it to a new demographic.

Exactly. Who cares if he didn't innovate, though, if his music is good? Nobody had bother tapping into that demographic, and he managed to where others failed.

There's a limit to innovation. Are Drake or JCole or Jay Electronica or Kid Cudi or K.Dot innovating right now?

I wouldn't say Em's the best but he's top 5 even with the garbage he's put out recently.

In terms of influence? Yes?

In terms of actual output? Nope.

That's not what I said.

Velvet is worse than Nickelback.

Alice in Chains is worse than Nickelback.

Every rock group created in the 90's and up not named Nirvana is worse than Nickelback. They are legends.

Kendrick raps like Andre 3000.

In terms of influence? Yes?

In terms of actual output? Nope.
Not even in influence lol.

I'm in my late 20s, so not really.

Run DMC was only 3x platinum. Every Eminem album did that, at the very least (and that's despite atrocious record sales in the 2000s).

Pre Eminem, white people were definitely fucking with Dre, Snoop, Pac,and Biggie based on album sales from those dudes.

Maybe, but that's the extent of it, really. Not a lot of rappers were extremely successful aside from those - you could add Outkast and Jay-Z but that's more late-90s.

That's the thing, his music isn't that good and nobody could tap into that same demographic because they weren't white with a Dr Dre cosign. They also didn't spit corny controversial lyrics either.

Looking back, Eminem's discography wasn't all that special. The reason why he became the most successful rapper during the early 2000s was greatly due to his material going on dissing sprees towards a variety of pop culture celebrities. He had a good song here and there, but I'd argue that his best tracks were the diss tracks that he let out in the wild. That's where he could let himself shine. My favorite Eminem song is "The Sauce". It had a great beat, and his rhymes and delivery were on-point. Eminem is on his game when he has a target to focus on, and specifically, that target needs to be a person who he hates enough to want to make a diss track about. Overall, naw, Eminem isn't the best rapper.

I'm disappointed that the Beastie Boys didn't reach the level of fame that Eminem received. By the time they made Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty, their rhyming and beat production had matured into excellency. They came a long way from Licensed to Ill. They also oozed fucking style, and played some pretty damn good punk rock music and instrumentals. MCA was the best technical rapper of the three of them. RIP :(

He's not even top 100.

ITT: Downplaying Eminem's legacy and career achievements. I'm out of this thread now. Peace.

Run DMC was only 3x platinum.
They were also the FIRST to have a rap album go gold. They were a household name at the time, something no other rap act had done.

Their influence and presence at the time was bigger than Eminem's ever could be. He was walking down a road someone else had paved.
