I keep forgetting about Ice Age 4 and I'm sure it will be huge, but I'm pretty certain TDKR will outgross it handily thanks to a much much bigger domestic gross.

People are also forgetting about the final Twilight film.

How much the Ice Age and Madagascar films have made is sad. Just horrible films. I would go see a 90 minute silent film of that squirrel trying to get the acorn though.

Will be front loaded and drop off quickly. Won't touch the big boys of this year.

I really think the Hobbit is being way overestimated.

Hobbit isn't going to get the repeat viewings TDKR will get or what ROTK had once people realise its greatly inferior(imo) to Lord of the Rings.

the average moviegoers have been hyped for Nolan's Batman for a while now. its fresh in everyones mind.
Hobbit took way too long to be made, if it came out within about 5 years of ROTK this would be no contest.

The amount of declaratory statements in here based solely on opinion and conjecture blows my mind.

And aside from the debate, taking a dump on either director's ability to put miracles on screen is hilarious. They're both probably going to be fucking phenomenal films by proven, genius filmmakers.

I think it's inferior but the book is easier to depict on screen. It would have been easier to adapt than LOTR and can be just as universal.

I wish it weren't two parts since I don't think there's a need to add, but Jackson seems most comfortable in this world so I can't wait.

The Hobbit for sure.

Look at On Stranger Tides. First movie after a trilogy, semi-old cast, a couple of years after the last Pirates.. BOOM, 150M more than the previously best performing Pirates outside of US.

Same thing with the Hobbit, people are dying to get back to Middle-earth. Batman is not popular all over the world, Tolkien has much broader appeal I think.

Also, are not more people familiar with the Hobbit book than the FotR-books? I predict the Hobbit will perform better than Return of the King.

Yes, before the LotR movies were made the Hobbit was the more beloved and successful of Tolkien's books. If Jackson and co. follow the theme they did with Fellowship, i.e. make it a fun adventure flim, then the Hobbit will be every bit as impressive as Fellowship was. And if that is the case I expect the Hobbit to dominate the box office. I predict it will gross around $1.2 billion worldwide (between $400 and 425 million in the US and anywhere from 750 to 850 outside the US).

I'm pretty sure Batman is one of the most popular fictional characters in the world. I'm willing to bet Mickey, Supes, and Bugs are more than likely the only characters more noticeable and popular.

Plus it will be released in China this time. Huge market.

Still I think WW+DOMESTIC, The Hobbit will edge out TDKR.

Overall I know I will enjoy TDKR more. Never got into LOTR and just read the Hobbit and while it was good I didn't find it amazing.
